Dom Pointer

It's possible that as Dom goes, so goes SJU this year.

I think you can pencil in what you're going to get from Harrison, Jordan, and Obekpa this year. I assume Phil will be the third starting guard in a 3-guard lineup, you can probably pencil in what you're going to get from him and Branch.

If you assume that you're going to get next to nothing from your other bigs, then the difference-maker is going to be what you get (or don't get) out of Dom as your starting 4 (and likely playing big minutes).

I've always thought he had enough tools to be a great contributor (even without much of a jump shot). And I'd love to join Newsie in the breakout prediction. But after his absolutely monumental regression last year, that's a mighty skinny limb to be out on.

If in fact Lavin uses three guards plus Obepka and Sir Dom we are in deep sh...t with our rebounding. Perhaps it would benefit us having just Harrison and Jordan in the backcourt along with Jones ,Pointer and Obepka upfront. Of course we have more scoring with Greene in the lineup.

How about we see what happens in the early season tournament before we say the season is a bust

Pointer has had an overall very good season. He has filled a boxscore, but also had some bad games. I think that scouts will look at those bad games as an indicator of what you may expect when the competition becomes NBA caliber. For Dom to raise his stock he must have monster games against the best in this league, have a great BE tournament, or be instrumental in a couple of NCAA wins.

But what amuses me more if that when the next bad game comes in a loss, and if he strings two of those together in losses, there will be a string of posts saying the guy sucks.

I think everyone here knows that Dom is having a hell of a season. A few bad games won't negate that. Just look at DLo. He has had a few bad games in a row but I think he is still having a great season.

As for the NBA scouts and raising his stock, make 3's and it's not even a question. He is a 2 guard in the NBA and you need to be able to shoot. He can do almost everything else.

Thanks for continuing to be the resident chronic complainer/crybaby. Boohoo. Everybody Loves Dom! Wake up!

I think there is way too much hate on Pointer going around. His career is not even over and we're saying things like "we know how that worked out" about him. He still has another year to prove himself. Hypothetically, what if he has a great year and we make the tourney and do great or whatever. Are we going to say we know how that worked out. I'm not trying to bash anyone but it's too early to say something like that about a guy on our team. I know SO FAR he hasn't lived up to expectations, but he didn't make the rankings, you can't blame that on him. He plays hard every game and wants to win for us and all we do is say how bad he is. Then were saying he threw a hissy fit beacuse Alibegovic almost took out his knee on accident. This could of been a terrible injury for the team and for a guy in his senior season. He could of missed out on a season with the teammates that he came here with 3 years ago. Imagine, his knee got caught somehow and he missed this season with the other seaniors. I don't see that as a hissy fit. I see that as reasonable in the heat of the moment. Meanwhile, we're saying he threw a hissy fit while we cry and complain everyday about him. I just don't think all of the hate on Dom is the right way to look at him.

See above, Bamafan

Sounds like that is a post prior to this season. I actually called Pointer a mini M Jordan off what I saw of him in some HS all star games and highlights. Had a disappointing last couple of seasons which had me wondering about his commitment and work ethic to improve. Well he certainly has this year, is probably team MVP and can't see anyone that is a reasonable person going back to saying he sucks after 2 bad games in 2 losses unless it is said out of frustration in the heat of the moment. JMO.

Not ragging on you but Alibegovic is a freshman. This was from earlier this season. He plays at a high speed and is prone to mistakes. One thing that is part of his improvement is that LAvin is letting him push the ball all the way up the floor, leading to easy baskets in transition.

My favorite Dom play against Providence was after he made his three pointer at the first half buzzer, he pump faked a three(which he likely would have missed) Providence's big man went for it and he drove the base line for a big dunk. He has done that a few times this year.

That's his favorite move. My son and I poked each other after he slammed it home. He does it once a game.

He is 0-14 from three this year. Letting him shoot from deep would be the first thing on my scouting report if I was the opposing coach. It's crazy someone would fall for his shot fake.

I don't see how anyone could hate on Dom this season. He's been our second second best player.

We are 9-2 when Dom scores 11 points or more. For the first time in his career, I actually think we need him to carry some of the scoring load.

Someone told me Dom has Marillac's posts from last year killing him taped in his locker and used it as motivation this offseason.

Kind of like DLO with that Mainman post

Can't be 0-14 from three, he hit the shot to end the first half against Providence.

Teams still play off Dom to shoot. He has done a great job, for the most part, in not taking long jump shots that are a low percentage from him - instead either passing it up, taking it to the hoop or moving a few steps in and shooting a closer jump shot (and he is making some 12-15 footers this year.

He's been our best player. His effort has been off the charts. His game changing play making ability has helped us regain momentum in key spots. He's not only second in rebounding and blocks but 1st in assists on team that plays 3 guards. Greene gets all the credit for the Cuse win but Dom was the one feeding him. He almost single handedly beat Marquette on both ends and was huge in both Providence wins, including on defense against Henton. I guess you can debate Dlo but even he will tell you Dom is our MVP.

Let's hope he's on tomorrow night. Must win!

Then it was worth it! I like this Dom a lot this year. Dom already has twice the offensive rebounds he had all of last season. If he did that last year, we would have danced.
