Dom Pointer

Why are some of you trashing Pointer, anyway. He shows plenty of energy...he'll open plenty of pro scout's eyes...and he's graduating in January. He's one of the few positives I've seen in the last few years.

Minus the Notre Dame brawl  All kidding aside I agree Pointer has a ton of energy and I am really hoping he has a big year. I will admit that I have been critical of his decision making on the floor at times but maybe he will silence his critics this year.

He needs to get his butt in the paint and away from the three point line. The only way I can see starting someone with his talent on the outside is if they are going to come flying in to hunt boards. But, that never happened. If we are going to be successful this year then we need to see 25-30 minutes per night of Dom doing what we all thought/hoped Keith Thomas was going to do. Set picks, play tough interior D, box out. Junkyard dog type of stuff.

Not trying to be an ass but I really cant tell if you are being sarcastic or not. Open scouts eyes?

I think there is way too much hate on Pointer going around. His career is not even over and we're saying things like "we know how that worked out" about him. He still has another year to prove himself. Hypothetically, what if he has a great year and we make the tourney and do great or whatever. Are we going to say we know how that worked out. I'm not trying to bash anyone but it's too early to say something like that about a guy on our team. I know SO FAR he hasn't lived up to expectations, but he didn't make the rankings, you can't blame that on him. He plays hard every game and wants to win for us and all we do is say how bad he is. Then were saying he threw a hissy fit beacuse Alibegovic almost took out his knee on accident. This could of been a terrible injury for the team and for a guy in his senior season. He could of missed out on a season with the teammates that he came here with 3 years ago. Imagine, his knee got caught somehow and he missed this season with the other seaniors. I don't see that as a hissy fit. I see that as reasonable in the heat of the moment. Meanwhile, we're saying he threw a hissy fit while we cry and complain everyday about him. I just don't think all of the hate on Dom is the right way to look at him.

He was awful last season

Get your PF shoes ready, Dom, we will sink or swim with you this season.

Dom killed us last season. He was awful. To be fair, though, I blame the staff just as much. You have to put your players in a position to utilize their strengths while hiding or minimizing their weaknesses. Lavin saw Dom as Brownlee Part II and gave him the green light to do anything he wanted.

That written, the kid was the #35 RSCI rated recruit in the 2011 class and most of the kids before him (and some after him like Moe and Sampson) are gone. He should dominate as a senior. I always liked him in the PF position better than the SF slot. He can rebound and do it well when he's in position and has the right mindset...his problem was that he was never in position on the offense side of the ball. We go as far as he takes.

My new Avi reflects my sense of Dom's match ups with bigger players. :) I do hope he rises to occasion.

I think the Notre Dame fight hurt Pointer last year. His whole game is aggresivness, hustle, showing a lot of heart and emotion. After the fight, I think he got a little passive, like he maybe shied away from contact, to avoid having a situation escalate. That's why, while I have the utmost respect for Moose, I disagree with him, and actually liked Dom getting a little PO'd at Amar during that open practice. It was shades of two years ago, when, until ND, he was using all that kind of energy and anger to his (and the team's) benefit.

Of course, I don't want to see him punching opponents again, but a little bit of what we saw 2 years ago will help, IMO.

No sarcasm...I predict a breakout year.

While he hasn't lived up to his hype out of high school, I think this can be a good thing for him. If he is coached right, he will be playing more in the paint and less towards the 3 point line (which should be good). He will be forced to rebound and I rather have a player with his athletic ability at 6'5" going after a rebound against a 6'8" player without leaping ability. He plays hard and will give it his all. This season will be dependent on his play and I, unlike most of you, am confident in his ability as a 4.

Confident?

Yeah, I did that last year. Not going there again.

It's possible that as Dom goes, so goes SJU this year.

I think you can pencil in what you're going to get from Harrison, Jordan, and Obekpa this year. I assume Phil will be the third starting guard in a 3-guard lineup, you can probably pencil in what you're going to get from him and Branch.

If you assume that you're going to get next to nothing from your other bigs, then the difference-maker is going to be what you get (or don't get) out of Dom as your starting 4 (and likely playing big minutes).

I've always thought he had enough tools to be a great contributor (even without much of a jump shot). And I'd love to join Newsie in the breakout prediction. But after his absolutely monumental regression last year, that's a mighty skinny limb to be out on.

If in fact Lavin uses three guards plus Obepka and Sir Dom we are in deep sh...t with our rebounding. Perhaps it would benefit us having just Harrison and Jordan in the backcourt along with Jones ,Pointer and Obepka upfront. Of course we have more scoring with Greene in the lineup.
