DePaul

nice rd win for this young johnny team

building a big lead but not defending depauls 3's is Lavins fault

DePaul is the worst 3 point shooting team in the league so we packed it in. Their threes wouldn't have made a difference if we did the other things like not turning the ball over 4 times in a row etc. the players still have to get on their man and rotate to the shooter. To say its his fault is just silly and simplistic. Basketbsll is a game of runs and they made one or two timely threes that the defenders didn't get out on. That's it.

Not only did their YTD 3 point accuracy support the approach but they weren't hitting them in this game either...it was more about our guys getting a bit overconfident on offense and approaching it as a pickup game...bad shots, passes etc...its a learning expereince and hopefully they will grasp fact that with a lead you have to take your opponent's will away by continuing to attack while getting high % shots

I agree with your post. I'd like to add one thing, and not sarcastically. Have you stepped onto a court lately? I had time to kill at an event at my son's hs and walked into he gym. I paced off the length of the court (88 feet vs. 94, not bad). Then I walked out to the 20 foot, 6 inch three point line. (The NBA I believe is 23' 9"). It's such a short shot that it's ahrd to believe you get three points from that. If you don't contest that shot at all in college, all but the very worst athletes will miss that shot with regularity. So, I do beleive you are correct in the strategy of packing it in, and it worked, but if you dare someone to shoot from 20'6", and allow them to square up, you eventually will get burned.

This is true, but we're no longer daring every team to hit threes...just the ones who don't shoot it well from there. Against ND, the strategy was the opposite and we got out on their shooters and contested everything daring them to beat us inside where our athleticism led to the 9 blocks that night.

I also thought the key to DePaul's comeback were the TO's and in particular the sloppy passing from Amir. He was firing the ball a couple times to nobody and seemed more panicked than he needed to be. It's fixable and I'm sure glad that sloppiness came against DePaul's press so we can try and correct it before we see a better one (like Louisville's).

Yesterday we played with confidence; this is what I had expected from the very first game. Win or lose I will continue to enjoy these kids.
It's obvious we can't play without Obekpa in the lineup; too many easy putbacks for the opposition.
Looks as if we can stop worrying about the need for a point guard; Branch can finish and can shoot the jumper.
Garrett has been in La, La land; don't like him handling the ball under pressure.
Harrison has been under control; has been tough with assists and rebounding.
Pointer has been absolutely outstanding with defense which was expected; definitely improved his offense. Not afraid to pop a short jumper and finishes on a fast break.
One thing I know about Jones is he can score inside with a nice jump hook.
Sampson flies down the court on our breaks; talk about athleticism.
Two B.E. wins on the road; onto Rutgers and a 4 and 3 league record.

We have to beat Rutgers this week if for no other reason than Kranmars sanity because I dont know if he could handle losing to rutgers twice. He'd go Mike Rice crazy

Agreed, although I thought Jones did a nice job against ND with Obekpa playing limited minutes. Jones gives us a different look and a better shot at some offense when CO sits with his shooting and better passing skills.

How many feel Rutgers has our # WE need to beat them badly another loss t them will kill our season as well as our pride WE can do it we re better than them Light that fir COACH

I am happy we won but this was DEPAUL.
Obekpa should be shooting fouls until he cannot lift his arms after every practice!
We have a point guard that can shoot.....finally.
Sir Dom has improved but his poor decision making cost us the big lead and made the game close. His two turnovers turned the game in favor of DePaul.
Harrison finally playing within the offensive framework but his shooting % has gone south.
In Big East play Orlando Sanchez continues to avarege triple zeros.
Lavin is alive again on the bench.

In the Big East a road win counts for something, especially when you are a team filled with underclassmen that still has holes.

If you want to looks for the problems with a team that won two in a row, all I can see if you must be great fun on Christmas morning when you don't get what you want. Be happy for what you have, and watch it grow.

Nice sentiment Jack. I can't help but thinking though that it is much easier to express this after two nice wins, than after two ugly losses. I hope you remember this after the inevitable rough outings occur down the line this year.

I don't celebrate Christmas, I celebrate Festivus!
I began my in depth analysis with "I am happy we won..."
You know a family that actually waits until Christmas morning to open gifts???

The lack of respect on this board for other programs is hysterical.

I know, what a joke. Obviously they don't read boards or other threads however, because if they did they
would see St. John's referred to in that fashion by posters on ESPN, Sporting News etc, When the C7
is mentioned for power no one mentions St. John's. They are an afterthought in the process. along with "DePaul"
the Hall and Providence.. It is reminiscent of Joe3 with no memory at all of the history of St. John's being good.
Same with De Paul with Strickland, Comegeys etc. It is a now world. What have you done lately?

My family opens gifts on Christmas morning. We go to mass together also.

Your indepth analysis can be summarized by your assessment that DePaul sucks therefore why should we get excited. Someone your age, and perhaps with memory intact shoudl remember how excited Norm Roberts was just a few years ago to escape with a win on our home court vs. St. Francis.

Lav, I am sure, was just as exited to escape with a win on our home court against emerging basketball power NJIT! We do agree however that we have nothing to brag about but NYC and MSG will once again be an important part of the new league and St. John's must be a top 4 team in that league for MSG to have an impact on recruiting. The new league will be a 4 to 5 bid league at most and if the pecking order will be Geotgetown, Xavier, Butler, Marquette, Creighton, Villanova...........WE WILL BE FOREVER SCREWED!
Lav needs to keep the hammer to rock to position SJ for the future after he has gone west.

Agree 100%. The squad is 2-1 on the road in the BE with their loan loss that tough one in OT vs. Nova. Need to exact revenge in New Brunswick this Wed. I would go if I was not traveling. But this is an important game on many levels.

There are some days when I feel Lavin is a short timer here, that his heart lies elsewhere on the other coast. Then again, guys like Keith Hernandez, Rusty Staub, and many others became dyed in the wool New Yorkers, and would be nowehre else. Even David Cone, Charles Oakley embraced the city.

I think unlike Roberts, Lavin has a plan to rebuild this program. He by his own number counts 19 guys he brought in on schoalrship, and says he had to fill 2 and 3 players at every position. Be patient. The phoenix will rise again.
