Depaul game thread

All's well that ends well ... I suppose ... but this team is taking precious years off of my life, and I really don't have that many more to spare.

(Sir Dom is a special player. We're very lucky to have him.)
Just back from the game,I agree with you my years are melting away with this team but we have found ways to win I have not seen in a long time

Pretty typical game for us: not great on free-throws, out-rebounded by double digits, we have few turnovers and play pretty solid defense. We give all of our fans aneurysms.

Depaul was 18-20 from the free throw line which is outstanding.
St. John's was 17-27; not great at all.

We were outstanding on turnovers though - only 5 of them.

Rebounding we were our usual selves.

Chris missing his foul shots has become comical and expected to the point where, when he actually hit one tonight, the crowd was estatic!
He needs a dedicated coach to address this very glaring weakness. Just cannot have him in close games near the end since there is only a 25% chance he will hit a shot. Go small with either Balamou or Marc-Antoine since we suck at rebounding anyway.

On a separate note I think the biggest beneficiary of Orlando not playing right now is Dom Pointer. Not sure he'd be doing this all right now if Orlando was playing
Also a beneficiary is Chris who would not be in the games that are this close. So sad to see Orlando on the bench and not be able to contribute!

My favorite play of the game was the Texas trio scoring on beautiful passing...Branch to D'Lo to Jones. We need more quick touches and passes like that sequence.
Harrison got his points in the first half but was horrendous in the second half. On one sequence he took a quick off-balance three, missed and went on to foul a DePaul player who hit both FTs.....a 5 point turn around. He later blew a layup and stared at his hands while DePaul took off on the rebound. He plays with great emotion but it bites him on the arse too often.
Our defense sucked as DePaul got what they wanted most possessions.
Branch, while sloppy with the ball a couple of times, continues to show he is a scoring option.
Phil played solid tonight.....happy for him.
Chris with one point....1 of 4 FT attempts......when will Lav get him in the freaking offense???
Game was too close for the elderly alums at the game. I counted 7 defribillators firing in overtime.

Just got back from the game a half hour ago...my voice is almost gone from our terrible FT%. D'Lo missed the easiest layup I've ever seen a player miss in my life and that plus the terrible FT% almost cost us the game. Definitely a game that wasn't supposed to go to OT, but these things happen and all we need is the W. I was pissed to discover that the students sections were only for "general admission" behind each hoop. Wtf? I've never had a problem sitting there and I was turned away to mid level seats. The advertising was also false as it said "First 500 fans get this rally towel!". I was there 45 minutes before the game and they didn't give anything out...the towels were only for the people who sat behind each basket. Very bad way to treat the students...trust me people took note of that.

Anyway, great crowd IMO, the place was about as loud as it can be, and this proves the fans will come if we prove we can win consistently. The refs seemed to throw D'Lo to the wolves tonight even before he fouled out...felt bad for him. Really just a few things: 1) Can someone please teach these kids how to shoot FT's? It's really embarrassing and has us about to have heart attacks. 2) Look for that extra pass...when Marco came in he was wide open, Jakarr missed him and missed the shot...then next possession he found him open again and he made the pass where Marco drained the 3. We also seemed to settle for shots too far away when I noticed a few open lanes to drive in and at least draw a foul. We are so overdue for a red hot 3 point game...let's hope it comes against one of the big boys i.e. G'Town, L'Ville, Cuse. 6-3 yes after the softer part, but hey...we have shown we are not playing around.

Coach has been substituting for him on offense and putting him back on defense for the last several games. Part of Lavin's end of game strategy.

BTW, did anyone else find the officiating particularly bad this evening or am I just too much of a "homer"?

This was a hard fought win by these kids. Pointer had 11pnts 12boards Jakar had 8 boards.
Think Obekpa only had 5 in 29min, would like atleast 8 from him.
I`m not gonna worry about the wins being ugly, at this point they`re becoming a team.
This was the perfect time to play the lower B.E. team, getting a 5game winning streak gives us confidence.
What better way for a young team to get confidence then to beat the lower teams. Now they`re starting to believe in themselves, and now we`ll get 2 tests to see exactly where we are at before going to Syraciuse

Now on to Georgetown. Tonight shouldn`t have to be a wakeup call, I`d like to hope that they remember what Georgwtown did to them at MSG (I`d like to think that game made them look themselves in the mirror, and ask themselves if they really want to be big time ballers or not. Well maybe just maybe they turned that corner, they are 5-0 since then afterall.), payback is a mother.

Then UConn at MSG and I`ll be there. With the way we`re playing I`m freaking getting hyped for that game.

good remark regarding Texas trio. I agree. LOL on the rest.

The five wins in a row will not help against Gtown. A good planned strategy will.
Villanova came off back to back wins against top 5 teams and still lost at ND.

You have to have season tix to sit in the student section. Why would it be fair to let a fair-weather fan in the premium student seating ahead of someone who put their money where their mouth is before the season?

I dont think this was mentioned so I'll say it...With this win we already have surpassed last year's total of 13.. 14-7 is a nice record for us. We've squeaked a few out and had a few slip away so i guess parcells was right when he said, "you are what you are." Although I'd love to have Murray State, UNCA, and Nova back.

My one observation from this game is complete speculation but I've said it on here before. When D'Angelo shoots looks at the referees and makes dissenting faces, 9 times out of 10 they are going to make him pay for it. They went out of their way to screw him. That 5th foul was a ghastly call. It may not be right, but the refs are going to throw sh*& back at you the only way they know how if they feel you are showing them up. It happened tonight no doubt about it.

They did seem out to get us tonight. Harrison was called for ticky tack's all night, Obekpa was called for a few for no reason, DePaul lost the ball out of bounds several times and it stayed with them, a missed charging call, etc. Harrison made a rebound on one play, and a DePaul player came flying over his back and tackled him and DePaul came up with it after no call, and a 3 pointer resulted. You weren't imagining anything.

I'm re-watching the game and they never gave us those 2 points for the DePaul goaltend. Wtf? They added it right before half, but after half they took it away. Anyone else notice this?

The score to end the first half after the goaltend was 38-31. After the half it was still 38-31.

Right, they added it late, but then I'm almost positive they took it off again which really confused me. Also, that was a TERRIBLE no call on Harrison getting tackled by 3 DePaul players and the refs refused to call DePaul players hitting Harrison's hands. If you watch close you can see Harrison showing his hands as if to say "They keep hitting my hands and no call?". He got totally screwed all game. And there also should have been no OT at all. I just saw it online and the foul was committed with .001 seconds left. The contact was clearly there, but the ref called it a split second later. I know you can't change when they called the foul, but either way Sampson was hit with time left. Refs definitely had an off day all around I would say. Thank god we were able to pull away with that W even with the refs missing calls all game.

At the end of the day we got another BE win, without our best player playing an important stretch of the game and in OT.
We have surpassed last years total in wins and are playing good D and not turning the ball over. Those are the key attributes of a well coached team, don't ask me but rather ask Bobby Night. If we can continue with those 2 key attributes additional wins will come as offence improves over time. We have 2 players that can score 20 any given game and a group of others , Sir Dom, AG, Phil, Jamal who are capable of scoring in double figures. Hopefully everyone can continue to improve their games.

Lavin on winning w/o Harrison: "What we're seeing is the development of Branch, Pointer. But we're not very good right now."

Agree with most of your post. However, Lav can't get Chris in the offense since Chris is offensively challenged. His job right now is to block shots, get rebounds, and put backs. That is all he is capable of at present.
