Defining Moment for this Program

Will be the day the members of this forum stop looking at all the negative and somehow find joy in just being a fan of the team. :eek:hmy:
:
Will be when some members of this forum get a life outside this website so they get enjoyment from the team winning. :eek:hmy: :eek:hmy:

Will be when losses are not always the coaches fault and wins are not always the players talent. :eek:hmy: :eek:hmy: :eek:hmy:

Will be when someone posts a reality check (like this one) to be read by the guilty members and he doesn't have to expect smart, witty, sarcastic, degrading responses! :eek:hmy: :eek:hmy: :eek:hmy: :eek:hmy: !

So to summarize, the defining moment for you was when we hired Lavin and became the powerhouse we are today; except of course for all the problems caused by a spoiled and unappreciative fan base.

This post reminds me of that song Julie Andrews taught the Von Trap Family when they were scared of Lightning. Not sure why, but it just does.

In terms of impact on the program overall this century, Mike Jarvis not taking the Washington Wizards job. Here's a quote from ESPN on May 19, 2000:
If coach Mike Jarvis leaves the Red Storm, associate head coach Kevin Clark is expected to be one of the first coaches interviewed. But sources close to the Red Storm administration told ESPN.com that Hofstra's Jay Wright will be the favorite.

Wow, that quote is a bit stunning

I'm sorry, but this has GOT to be Mrs. Lavin or a member of the extended family.

By every metric, I am an old fart, I got on this board when it started. I've seen a lot of posters come and go. I graduated in 1961 from the school of Pharmacy. I went to SJU because I was a Redmen fan longer than I knew anything about SJU (as a school). I always loved the school and all of our sports teams. I do not keep track of records of who beat who on such and such a date. I am not up on the rosters, though I follow them each year religiously. I am proud to be an alum, I am proud of the school. I love it's history and tradition. I used to post a lot on the old board, I don't anymore, because I feel like you have to have a degree in statistics after reading the posts here.
Sometimes I admire the breadth and depth of knowlege that many of you possess, but there are times when I feel kind of sad reading some of them. Inspite of my age, I still consider myself competitive and even confrontational when necessary, but I try to pick my battles when something matters.
Now to why I am writing this... This board has turned sour. We have posters who take every opportunity to denegrate the school, it's academics and the sports departments. Any chance to throw a dig at the coaching staff, the Athletic Director, the Schools Administration, everything is fair game. I think sometimes that some of you think the posts that hammer are going to elevate the you The more negative, the higher your rank. How many ways can you say we are unhappy with the coaching staff? You want Lavin out. Every day the negative flows like a river. It gets old boring and extremlely tedious.
I have written this reluctantly. I am sorry to some of you for putting you through it. This however is my board too. So to all of you who think this is nothing more than the rantings of an old man, I do not feel bad for calling you out, because every day I have to put up with your negative dribble.

We are contemporay,I was at SJU Commerce from Jan '56 to Jan '61. You are not an old fart. But, if I may remind you in our time we were instructed in the difference between knowledge and wisdom. You are so right this site exhibt a lot of knowledge and little wisdom

Frank 61 nailed it. I said a long time ago, something to the point that it's crazy to be so negative on here, because rival coaches would turn around and share all the negativity with current & future recruits. This "sharing" would be accompanied by this type of comment, "why would you want to go to St. John's? Just look at all the negative comments they get from their fans about the coaching staff, the facilities and the current players."

Folks, that hasn't changed.

The defining moment for the program for me was when we beat Georgetown in the 84-85 season to become the favorite to win our first national championship. The excitement of that short period rose expectations to a high that never could be achieved in the thirty seasons that followed. During those thirty years, we had to see our conference mates including Syracuse and Connecticut win National Championships while we had less than 10 really stellar seasons.

I grew up in Queens and still live here. I have nothing but respect for the graduates of the school and feel that it represents Queens well. I was just becoming a teen thirty years ago and am still a fan today as I bring my children to games. Most of my friends and relatives don't understand why I attend so many games. Maybe I am too attached to that dream and should give it up. I hope that I don't and one day I can attend a game with my grandchildren. I apologize if I have expressed too much negativity. I just want the team to win.

The defining moment for this program, hands down, was the day Carnesecca retired. At that point, after 3/4 of a century of winning, it was and still is presumed that this program must win.

This problem is endemic in college sports to various degrees of relativity. Each successful program with an iconic coach struggles with the long shadow that the retired coach cast.

It doesn't matter, if its John Wooden, Bobby Knight, Jim Calhoun, Adolph Rupp, or in our case, Lou Carnesecca, all future coaches at each respective school is measured with an expectation of success of the icon.

Thus UCLA has had more success than SJU, but gone through a succession of coaches in trying to replicate Wooden's dynasty. Even with an NCAA championship AFTER Calhoun, UCONN fans are grumbling this year. As soon as a team stops winning, even briefly, at Kentucky, the coach is on the hot seat. Indiana simply isn't as formidable without Knight.

Even if our glory days are largely littered with NCAA failures, the moment Looie hung it up, the salad days were over. I wouldn't say over for good, whatever that means, because the nearly qtr century since Looie retired has hardly been "good".

You wouldn't do that now, would you?
