Defensive Doldrums

Big difference though is that both EB and Omar were far more on the NBA radar than our young backcourt - who aren't on the NBA radar at all. Cook had tons of exposure coming out of HS and EB was not only a highly rated recruit but played on teams that were among the top 15 in the country, playing in all sorts of big games. EB had to leave but was projected as a first round pick and Omar was projected (by some) as being a first rounder as well. Our guys ain't anywhere close to that yet.

Plus the staff has a higher rated guard eligible in November.

While you may be right, the players don't always do the math. It does seem like there are a lot more opportunities overseas to make a living now than when EB and OC made their decisions. Just another factor to consider.

Refurbished strength & conditioning room. Hopefully Owens is at IHOP.

Thought Simon might have a little more muscle. Guess it's a good thing he's hitting the weights!

Hope he puts on as much muscle as possible, but key IMO is he has the length we need so badly at the guard spot. Especially defensively. Can easily play and guard the 3 in a three guard set, but will be nice to have the optionality to go big at guard when we want to.

We have a small and probably thinnest frontline in D 1. We have 3 guys(Amar, Mussini and RF) that play that physically can't guard anyone. Lovett and Ponds are small. Lovett, Ponds and Ellison also don't really put an effort into guarding anyone.
You guys want to play zone fine. Can't be worse, but what zone exactly will hide those issues?
Honestly I would rather play against a lazy zone team then a lazy man team. Might be worse.

Hard to imagine a defense worse than our man, but you could be right. The beauty of the DVR is that you can see where and when players make mistakes. Staff doesn't need the DVR. Weak or no box outs, no help defense, running away from the shooter (seen that a lot). One advantage to a zone would be giving a team another look, and protecting a player from fouling out. Downside is a poorly executed zone will be torn to shreds.

Do people really think this team is going from 1-17 to beating Xavier and the other top BE programs on their home courts the next season?

This is a rebuild. The bigger risk is the young talent being forced to play too many minutes too soon.

We'll see better play on both ends of the floor in year three and beyond as more pieces are added.

Could be wrong but likely because of their size both ponds and lovett will be 4 year players, giving CM time to build a formidavble squad. That's two very good building blocks

I know this is repetition OLV72 and Beast
But CM inherited an expansion team
Think Mets circa 1962 ( or was it 3?)

We need time, time, time and it's on our side
Yes it is
You'll (SJU fans who've given up already) come running back, you'll come running back ( lyrics)

I think the secret to our success lies w defections, If our good players stay and we build around them, we will be very good. If players like Lovett leave, we could be chasing our tale. We have to reload not rebuild.

Also agree However, think we have to bring in bigger guards Simon is a great start. Not taking anything away fro Lovett and ponds who I believe are really good players for several yrs here and will keep improving. But we need those 6-4 6-5 guards to offset better teams with talented bigger guards played in combo with Ponds and Lovett

It's reloading and rebuilding.

Transfers are nearly as common as recruits. It is inevitable that we'll have a surprise player or two bolt after every season (or even during a season.) Every program deals with it. The staff is on top of it. They recruit more than any staff we've had here.

I disagree, w Ellison and Simon we are ok w size plus add in Bash and Clark. I think where we need size and strength is in the 4 and 5 positions. Need a strong rebounder w an inside game who won't get pushed around. That is our weak link IMO. If we had better bigs, we could play Bash or Clark at the 3.

Yes do agree with better bigs we are getting beat up underneath even though we have big very good with blocks but yes we do need that down low player with size Guess I would like to have it both ways

A couple of marginal kids are fine, but can't lose key guys & replace them readily. Creighton, Butler, Nova & Xavier are solid programs for many reasons. One is they enjoy roster stability & an abundance of four year kids. Hopefully SJU is headed in that direction.

How sound of a defensive player is Shamorie Ponds?

He averages 1.22 steals for every foul he commits.

Last night? 4 steals, 0 fouls. #SJUBB

Too often this season he's been a really poor defender, but damn, if he ever really wanted to he could be a dominant defender. Quickest hands I've seen at St. John's.
