Declining the Big East: Case Study of College of the Holy Cross
Just relaying a conversation I had with two Holy Cross Crusader alums .... The subject of Big East came up ... (they said): the admins didn't want to be associated that closely with SJU, SH, and Providence, on academic grounds ...... .
_______

The Holy Cross grads spin that Holy Cross turned down the Big East because it did not want to be associated with StJohn's, Seton Hall and Providence College is less credible when you understand that just 4 short years after turning down a 1979 invitation to join the Big East The College of the Holy Cross agreed to join with Manhattan College, Fairfield, St. Peter's University, Iona, and La Salle in the MAAC.

But they eventually saw the light, and joined BU, Bucknell, Lafayette, Lehigh, Army, Navy, Colgate in a very high academic League.

Would love one day for SJU to be among the Top 10 Catholic colleges
You are of course, aware that Bloomberg ranked Villanova the #1 business school in the US, and that before becoming a nationally ranked university (there are very specific criteria) for many years running Villanova was ranked the top regional school in the Northeast.

For the first time since they've been tracking this sort of thing more students accepted to both BC and Villanova are choosing Villanova over BC.

Right now without a fundraising campaign, they are raising $100 million per year. Their previous campaign , initiated in 2014 with a goal of $600 million, raised $750 million.

Their selectivity, on the strength of wise investments, building both the campus and high quality faculty and administrators, has zoomed in just a few years since doing the impossible- winning two national championships.

Having had kids at both Jesuit and Nova. Will say undoubtedly Villanova is more Catholic. Jesuit colleges watered down a Christian retreat for students Kairos (sp?) To remove all references to Christ so as to attract non Christian students. Insane.

They have completely built a new south campus, with a performing arts center that was slated to open this spring ( with Father Peter cast to perform in the initial production), new study halls, senior dormitories, high end restaurant and bar, cofee shop, and new health center (the 4th on campus). That's not to mention the completely renovated Finn is a world class college arena.

There are some good schools in HC'S conference but the Big east has 3 jesuit schools, plus providence and villanova. All better academically than Lafayette.

Nd still the most competitive catholic university, georgetown 2nd, yhen pickem between bc and the villanova.

Cousy's (Queens guy) Holy Cross NCAA National Championship still (I think) is the only National Championship in any major NCAA sport for a school with an enrollment under 3,000.

Tommy Heinsohn (Jersey City guy), had some great years there too. They won the NIT championship in the early 50's akin to a NC back then. Later on its BB tide turned ugly.

Until Uconnmen's BB team did it, HC was only team in New England to win a national championship.

BC:zero and zero in any sport but 5 in ice hockey.

Watching tonight's show and Colbert interviewing Conan O'Brien and the talk gets around to their dads and Fauci. Who would know but both are proud of Fauci and their dads being HC alums, Colbert class of '42 then the US Army and an immunologist who preceded Fauci at NIH. O'Brien's dad a microbiologist and military and esteemed in his field. Not bad for a rinky dink school in the armpit called Worcester, Massachusetts.
