David Jones, Huge Potential Piece This Year

St. John's has a chance to get back to the post-season for the first time since 2019 this season and a big reason for that will be the addition of David Jones.

Jones has spent two seasons in the Big East already at DePaul and in his second season he scored 20 or more points on seven occasions.

Jones is a sizey, athletic and talented wing who can put the ball in the hole, rebound, pass and defend multiple positions.

From an NBA perspective, Jones will be the best prospect the Red Storm has and this could be the year that Jones blossoms and ends St. John's NCAA Tournament drought.

2021-22 Stats: 14.5 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 2.4 APG, 1.7 SPG (44.5% FGs, 29.7% from three)

Granted v poor competition, but IMO Jones is godsend here

Over the past 7 seasons St Johns has mostly had Ponds or Champagnie as the #1 scoring option (the “go to guy” in a sense) Both great players with tremendous skill but both more ball dominate than Jones. Ponds liked to get the ball up top and toy with his dribble a bit to break defenders down. And while Champagnie could absolutely catch and shoot, a lot of his touches still involved him isolating his man and jab stepping until he either got enough room to elevate and shoot or decided to put his back into the guy and move into a post up situation. Awesome because they were often effective scorers but that style does break up the flow for a team at times and makes the outcome more reliant on that one player’s performance.

Jones seems to find his points more in the natural flow of the game. There are obviously times where he gets it and is clearly bucket hunting but they’re fewer so far. More points in transition, off broken plays, around the rim stuff. Will be interesting to see if things change as competition starts improving now but feels like it may be a more natural fit for the way Anderson likes to play. This team looks more reactive and everyone seems invested in the moment since they’re perhaps a little more likely to get the ball at any time. Just a random observation that may be proven untrue as we see more but I like the fit early on.

Jones is 4th in the conference in scoring to this point. However he is 51st in the BE and 5th amongst our starters in getting to the free throw line. Small sample size but I think we need to see him attack the rim a little more and get some easy points from the line. Might help him get going earlier in the game and open up his shooting opportunities to help bring that % up.

Do not agree at all that Champagnie was more ball dominant than Jones
