I went to both sessions yesterday. I was extremely disappointed with the number of St. John's fans in attendance. It was a big game and it sounded like there were more friar fans. Also, I can't believe how many Creighton fans were at the night session. Without them the night session would have been empty.

What did SJU fans have to cheer about exactly?

St. John's fan base is non existent

That's what happens when you make the tournament 3 times since the year 2000

Another difference is that the creighton fans are treating this as a vacation whereas most of us live here and had to work.

Umm this is NYC... one of THE most expensive places to live in the world. Most SJU fans have real jobs in international world leading companies, they are people that umm how do you say it... matter. I'm sorry if they were not able to fix around their busy high-stress work obligations to make a 2:30 game. I don't think people who live in Omaha and Rhode Island have the same obligations and have more free time on their hands.

How come these fans then are cheap, don't attend regular games let alone big ones, buy season tickets or donate money?

We have been irrelevant for 14 years and when the team starts winning, its like they pull you in to break your heart again.

Last game was perfect definition of our season and the past 14 years:
We start well,
then blow a lead,
then down by alot,
then come back to within one,
then because of a stupid foul or blind ref we lose the game and are back to where we stared with a big fat L.

It's masoquism

The corn doesn't get planted for another month or two. To be certain, go to the games tonight and ask some Creighton fans.

You know we haven't discussed this much, but back when we filled CA (Alumni Hall) for every game, and packed the Garden to the brim for big games, tickets were a LOT cheaper. I remember having a parent of one of the CYO kids I coached a few years ago ask me how expensive SJU tickets were. I answered him, and the guy, who has three kids, replied, "That's to rich for my pockets." I don't think that would have happened in the old days. We aren't talking about when a subway token was 15 cents, either. The cost of a college season ticket is now only for those who can afford it, not for the most passionate fans. So you wonder how much better we will have to be to actually sell out CA for an entire season - probably a lot better than what it took back then. The upshot is that many who buy the best seats don't even bother to show up at CA.

I agree.

My post was more towards SJU fans or alumns working for these big International companies. No connection to me. Grads of others schools work for those same big companies and go to games, donate, etc. Ours don't,

What struck me last night was not just the number of Creighton supporters in the building....but the age of them as well. There were a ton of older/elderly Creighton fans in attendance. For them it was not about missing work, they have long since retired. Rather, it was about a trip to NYC to see their alma mater play...and enjoy a long weekend.
By my unofficial count, I would say the fan breakdown for the 2 sessions from most to least was:
Creighton(easily rhe most. Maybe 6-7k at the evening session).
'Nova
Providence
Xavier
Seton Hall
St. John's
Marquette
DePaul (easily the worst. They had more band members than actual fans in the building).

I thought it was a very decent crowd for the afternoon secession. I was at the afternoon session the year before and their was less of a turnout;
I saw thousand upon thousands of empty seats at the AAC tournament and the ACC., in fact the ACC was terrible. For what it's worth.

I don't know about Seton Hall. They may have rivaled DePaul for the least.

A lot of the Creighton fans became Seton Hall fans, when the Pirates went up 13 in the second half.

Interesting I had a guy sitting in front of me yesterday who knew nothing and I mean nothing at SJU. Couldnt name a player on the team. But he was rooting his ass off for SJU more than most SJU season ticket holders I've seen.

Many of our alum cannot afford the tickets...I truly believe that is the reality of our problem. We are a blue collar school and most families in that bracket just cannot spend hundreds of dollars on college basketball each season, especially for a mediocre product.

I call it the Yankee syndrome. When I was a kid my dad took me to several games each summer. Now, my son is lucky if he goes to one game a season. The Yankees built a billion dollar stadium and pay ridiculous contracts and still expect to make a profit. Who does that punish? The average guy like me and you.

St. John's DOES NOT have to cover expenses like the Yankees do and they are not looking to profit...or are they?

Why do they STILL not make the games free for the students? Why not give each alum a free game for every game they purchase? There are plenty to do to get the the stands full, but it doesn't work if you still think you are an elite program and charge broadway prices for a vaudeville performance.

Kranmars and I used to purchase season tix together for years and as the prices climbed and climbed, we crawled further and further into the basement of obscurity. Then the points system came into play! It's this blind thinking that has this program stuck in neutral in many ways.

And there are many alum that live on LI. The train fare or parking expenses are expensive alone, making the day even more expensive. Concessions at MSG? Forget it! So, what family is going to be committed to this team? Not many. They go to Stonybrook instead.

This is the same reason why I go to several LI Ducks games each year, and sometimes no Yankee games. Economics is a big factor for many fans.

I didn't feel that we were outnumbered by PC by much if at all. I sat in section 101 behind the Providence student section and it seemed that almost all of the PC fans were on that side of the court. They obviously had more to cheer about but when we had that run at the end we made more noise than them. I also noticed that there were a lot of SJU fans in the 200s. I think the problem was that our fans were much more spread out while they seemed to generally be in the same area.

I was thinking this year might be a novelty for them. Not that they don't have passionate fans, but first year in the BE, ranked team, Doug McDermott send off, chance for an excuse to visit NYC. Curious how it turns out for them next year with fans traveling out here.
