I definitely skip those.

Also - as a lawyer I absolutely agree that you have to make your point clearly and succinctly - succinct being a different speed for judges, jurors, litigants, and basketball fans.
While succinct is important, it is not as important as being persuasive. If you are not the latter, then the listener will stop listening and you can kiss your case goodbye.

I’m surprised that no one has said , it’s better to score 9 3’s out of 27 attempts , than it is to score 2 out of 8.
RP should know that .

The loss to Creighton has shrunk the margin for error for St. John's moving forward. We voice our frustrations, from the lack of three point shooting, to shooting over Ryan Kalkbrenner, the last play..foul or no, should Rick Pitino have called a time out, why didn't they press and so much more. Plus the next 8 game stretch what does St. John's need to do? We break it all down

Not that it really matters after the fact but something we talked about on the podcast, and not sure if it was brought up here much...

Did you want a timeout called with 12 seconds left when they got the turnover on Ashworth for the last play? Given how the offense was playing in the game, should Rick have called a timeout to draw something up? Or are you ok with letting it play out?

With this group, I would call the TO. No one has yet inspired me with confidence (ala Ponds, Hardy, Mullin; Erick B et al) that they are able to create let alone make consistently a good shot with any degree of reliability in the moment. Luis did what you'd expect him to do, botch it. Even if Luis was the option, it would have been better to design something. Just MHO.

Interesting dilemma, I guess because our half court offense is so stagnant, I’d go with letting it play out and count our speed to get up court and keep fingers crossed that the man bringing up the ball has sense to find open guy for good shot or take a clean jumper if possible. RJ had ample time & great look from three w/o forcing it, but regrettably chose driving into Kalk territory on rebound after initial miss. On road you seldom get foul call on the last drive.

It may all be moot because the “basketball gods” may enjoy torturing us. 😇

Gee whiz . What games have you been watching? .
Excellent defense ? Where ? On the ball maybe but , can’t defend a 3 to even a little bit
Camden of Delaware torched us for 33 in the game prior . Yesterday the Blue Jays scored 27 points from 3 point distance . That won them the game !
Who cares if Ashworth turned it over 10 times . Did we score off those miscues?
He dropped 18 against us with 4 3’s . We had no one , Smith , KR , Wilcher , etc who defended him from 3 . He’s the type of non athletic player who over time kills us in games . Time and again .
Why because he can shoot ! Something this team doesn’t possess . Scott is not the answer .
If his shot selection and technique are off , after 3-4 seasons of College Ball , it’s not going to improve at this point . He is , what he is .

Pitino,Masiello , etc better get their Ass to Europe or the Midwest or anywhere and get a spot up shooter for next year . One who is ready to play right now at this level .
Too much is made of on the ball defense . Did it do anything to win us the game yesterday ?
If you want a sharpshooter on your team , you don’t worry about his defense . Period the end .
I mean they held Creighton to 57 points. That’s pretty elite defense. Currently have the 9th highest defensive metrics. Can’t ask for better than that!

jackfro, I'm always persuasive, but being succinct AND persuasive is the the secret sauce to making a good point. A little chestnut handed me by Jim Friel years ago.

Just don't ask my non-lawyer wife, she wins all the arguments!

RJ actually took both an open jumper and missed. He then drove to the hole. We crucify these kids for not taking it to the hole and making the refs blow their whistle. I think we played great D but our offense was anemic. I chalk it up to learning to win on the road. I feel this team will win a bunch of games handily but will make us cringe with a few more games like this.

So many ways you can slice it.

Of course calling TO gives you the chance to draw up a play or two. Also gives defense time to set up. While RJ got the shot off, it was (again) over Kalkbrenner which proved to be unwise all game. The no call on the foul is a tough pill to swallow...there was definitely contact but refs are allergic to the whistle in Omaha. Just frustrating overall!

Exactly. There's nothing wrong with going strong to the basket down 1 in the bonus. If he misses the 2nd jumper the Monday morning quarterbacks are all writing he should have driven it. This despite the nonsense coach spews in the presser. He wanted a Zuby 3 down 1?

LMF, good breakdown but to my way of thinking, the bottom line is, Pitino has just not done a good job. Two teams worth of players and I would submit he has clearly defined a role for one player, Jenkins.
He has been a mad scientist with virtually everyone else on the roster. It took him forever to right the team last year but still, IMO, making head scratching coaching decisions as late as the 2nd half of the UConn game.
This year, two point guards, means no point guards and no “coach on the floor”. He lamented the team not running “his play” at the end of the Creighton game, well, who had the keys to the car? Smith, Richmond, Luis? His half court offense is a joke yet chooses to play a half court game against a team begging to be pressed, and then declares we are “not a pressing team” in the post game. Really? You can’t get this group to force tempo? If that is really the case I would submit he has lost more than just his fastball. All athletic participants IMO are judged in the now, the past is for post career tribute dinners.
I would defy anyone to prove to me he has done a good job in the last year and a half without giving relative praise in comparison to the train wreck this program has been or pointing to his very well earned HOF past.
Logen - sorry that I missed this when you posted it originally. I could not agree more. Great summary. And probably not too many words for BrookJersey :ROFLMAO:

I'm always for saving that timeout, just in case you have problems getting the ball inbounds, or resetting if you have only 3 or 4 seconds left, and it's clear that nothing is developing. Then, call the TO, and reset.

Here’s why I want the time out. Clearly from his press conference Pitino insisting that the play he wanted was Zuby taking a three, must have been applicable if Ashworth made those foul shots. Unless Pitino was hallucinating I doubt he would want Zuby to take a three with a one point deficit. Therefore I believe he would have preferred another play and probably should have reminded his team that going to the basket to draw a foul at an away game would be futile as no call would be made (which actually happened). Yes a time out by coach was necessary by his own words by his dissatisfaction of the final play in his post game press conference.
