And the death knell is an alley oop. 100-59. As I said up thread, rock bottom.

Was that Creightons last basket to get them 100? That's real sad

Where's the self respect? Should have fouled the sob hard for clowning on them.
I remember Burrell, Evans, and a few others fouling hard in blow outs, when the opposition went for dunk.

I liked it because it let the other team know: if you try to clown on us, you might get hurt.

You don't want to see anyone get hurt, but in that situation is the exception.

I want to see that against PC, if they're blowing us out.

If we can play reasonable defense that may be a better approach to gaining self respect. Abysmal effort, lousy roster or not.

Very disappointed. None of our freshman looked good today. Will have to temper expectations for next year w Ponds and Lovett being freshman and small.

Temper expectations absolutely!
I wonder if end of year exhaustion physically and emotionally is a factor...also can anyone inform me of what happened with Yawke/Yakwe today ?

For those looking to push St. Jean out the door, who do you propose takes his spot?

X's & O's are only as good as the players who can execute it.

who is responsible for teaching defense

Al Lobalbo could do better from his grave

Can even 1 person here honestly say we have improved our defense over the year ?

I don't care how bad any team or player is on offense it's not hard to put effort and teach reasonable defense. And since I didn't see this game thank god it's been mentioned that certain players complain about fouls all the time and not concentrating on defense. So who is responsible for telling these players to stop complaining or they are coming out of the game or else put the effort on D.

Exactly Paultz, but do they really care to play defense with 2 games left.
Maybe they just gave up.

Why don't people understand this? We have a head coach with zero coaching experience. It is a huge learning curve for Mullin. It is going to take him more than a few years to figure it out. As a realistic fan we won't remotely challenge the top three of this league for at least three years and that is assuming we can get back to back top recruiting classes. Without top 5 classes and the current staff it will take longer.

To be fair, we played no defense, they had numerous wide open layups.
In the last minute Mvouika was fouling as well. It was like we wanted them to make it to 100.

They did not run up the score we forced them to shoot wide open layups.

They did throw a long alley oop for a dunk with less than a minute left to get to 100, which I thought was bush league.

Hard to be that outmatched, lose that much and play as hard as they have to just to compete for 30 games. It really is. Feel bad for them.
The real issue is you hope that mindset does not carry over to the next year for returning players.

PS glad Mullin got himself ejected. Nice to show players and fans it is bothering him. Not saying needs to do it all the time but even a robot would have eventually blown up watching this.

I tend to agree with many on this board who are concerned about our defense -- it is pitiful and yesterday it was particularly bad. Partly it is due to having a lot of freshmen who probably didn't have to defend at a high level in HS and it is also probably a lack of attention to detail by the staff.

This may sound terrible, but playing bad defense doesn't necessarily mean you can't win a lot of games. Watch North Carolina on any given night -- their defense is terrible and they are a top 10 team every year. Roy Williams basically tells anyone who will listen that his goal is to outscore everyone. Watch Baylor. Check that -- watch practically every team in the Big 12 except West Virginia. They play no defense. Check out a PAC-12 game (if you can stay up that late). Defense is an afterthought.

We are used to good defense, because the old Big East was a tough physical grind it out league.

Personally I'd love us to play some good old school physical defense. That's what I grew up on and what I like to see. And playing that way would have made the game yesterday closer and it would have made many games this season a little more watchable. If I watch another guard beat us off the dribble and get to rim uncontested because our help defenders are out of position, I'm going to scream.

But let's face it -- what we need are scorers. Guys who can put the ball in the basket. Guys who other teams actually have to worry about.

WE DO NOT HAVE ONE GUY LIKE THAT.

We have one very talented player who is still learning the game (Yawke), a center who is extremely limited offensively (Sima) and a bunch of other guys who would be the eighth man at best on any decent team in our league. Aside from Yakwe, we do not have any other players would be likely to start on ANY other team in the league -- to say nothing of the Power Five conferences.

So let's get some scorers, and make the other teams have to worry about us.

I'll take an 85-83 win under Mullin and enjoy it every bit as much as I used to enjoy an 58-56 win under Looie.

Wise

I agree but I do think Ponds and Lovett's skill set will have them better prepared to avoid the total decline that Mussini faced the last 20 games or so.

I don't disagree with that which is why you hire someone who can help you teach defense

Defense is all about effort. Our defense was fine at certain points of the year. It's pretty clear our guys have pretty much given up on the regular season. They probably are focused on the Big East Tournament.

It has become more obvious now after thirty games there is very little big east talent returning next year. If there is the opportunity to get any eligible transfer for next year who can contribute on the big east level the staff must make room for him.

Yakwe and SIma are clearly BE talent. They need better players around them. Ellison will be a serviceable BE player as well. I think it is fair to question Mussini at this point. But even though I think he can play a role as well they basically recruited over him anyway. We will be better next year.

We need beef, and we aren't getting it next year - two slight guards and two skinny stretch 3's, and a 6-10 player who sat out yet doesn't weigh 200. Our two 230 pound players aren't physical don't rebound, and we got outmuscled big time yesterday. If Alkins comes, that's a big plus.

I loved it. It was like a ghost town on campus because of spring break, but it didn't take away from the beauty of the campus. My parents were extremely impressed with the residential area, especially my dad, because that area was all parking lots when he went to St. John's. The D'Angelo Center was really nice.

I was planning on making a thread about it today, but I am going to St. John's next year. I made the decision after the visit. So there's a lot of fans unsure about our team next year but with me in the student section at every home game there's no way we don't have a great season :)
