Connecticut (MSG), Sat., Feb. 3, 12 NOON, FOX

Frustration, frustration, frustration……..this has to be one of the few, if not first, time(s) he has to deal with a team that refuses to be coached. I know that is harsh but that is what I see.
Or perhaps they are not good enough to rise to Pitino’s standards?

Let’s face one thing though, Pitino recruited this team to win right away, not develop talent. Why else would he have so many 5th year seniors?

I maintain that you can’t win with the transfer portal as your primary recruitment tool. Your core must be younger HS kids you can develop and then use the portal to fill a need here and there, not make a whole team.

We’re going to get destroyed at Marquette. They figured out late that we can’t stop the pick and roll.

I made my first sports bet in over a decade today…small bet for UConn. I’ll be placing a massive bet for Marquette if the line is within 5. I suggest other bettors do the same. View attachment 2026
There is no way the line will be as low as 5 unless MQ has players out. Likely about 7 or 8.

Ah, the old mid-major strategy. One problem: High majors pick you clean in the portal and years of development on a kid are essentially a waste.

Portal strategy is fine but the condensed time line means you are veritable strangers and are taking a leap of faith with a lot of kids with regard to attitude. Attitude has largely been good but our problem is unwilling defenders or lack of lateral speed for those willing to play D.

I will say though that if we had the budget, I would have gone crazy overpaying for local high school kids from the '24 class.

I think we all need to get off the ledge after this loss from UCONN yesterday a team which has a great chance to repeat as National Champions! Let’s put this is perspective they beat Xavier by almost 50 pts! This team is head and shoulders above certainly every team in the Big East and probably in the country. Hurley has recruited guys that really play into his system who are extremely talented! In order for Rick to compete with this juggernaut he will need to go out and recruit more talented players. We are just not there yet! I thought we played a great first half but missed some key opportunities in the second half to bring this game down to the wire! Sure I am just as disappointed as everyone else but I will take where we are now over the Anderson and Mullin debacles any day of the week!

Love Spencer or hate him, I would want him on my team anytime, Rutgers would agree;

I think you guys will be fine under Pitino. No way he turns you into a National Title contender with a few months to work with before the season started. I still think there's a good chance you're dancing. Hey, you don't have to play UConn again.

I didn't like Mike Anderson, he just doesn't teach disciplined basketball. I missed the Mullins years, we were lost somewhere in the AAC and had coaching issues of our own. I think St John's being really good will be great for the conference, we saw the potential in MSG yesterday, Interest is returning

Yes, it's important for Rick to recruit good high school kids. I suspect he's going to do that going forward, And yes, it's important to recruit a couple of kids through the portal to fill your needs. That's the formula Hurley has used. Rick doesn't have a freshmen class yet, 24/25 will be his first. His entire team was assembled through the transfer portal (except Soriano), that's a different animal.

You'll be fine, hope you go dancing, learn to enjoy the ride (I know, it's been a while :))

But as you say, you may have to pay well but I’d rather put the investment into HS 4 and 5 star kids. Hopefully Pitino has learned that picking up a kid from a mid major is a risk and 8/10 won’t work out.

Crazy observation, but I felt like one of the main reasons UConn was able to pull away from us is they literally did not miss a free throw until the end of the game. They shot 20-22 for 94%, which is well above their season average of 73%. In addition, their 46% from 3 was well above their season average of 36%. We really needed them to have an off day in those categories to have any shot. Frustrating

Even if that was the case, I was still surrounded by UConn fans who were constantly doing their chants. Miserable experience. The guy in front of me literally kept standing up blocking my view when they made good plays. I will say from my view in the 200s, the entire lower bowl looked like a sea of red.
From my vantage point it looked 65/35 St. John’s. We were loud. They definitely made their presence felt. Seems we all have the pain in the ass UConn fan story to tell. I certainly did.

I was just doing a compilation of the average margin that UCONN beat their opponents this year to date and the number is 20 pts. We lost our first game by 1 pt and yesterday by 13 Not bad by any stretch!
Hang tough!!!!!!
