Congrats Rafael Pinzon

I think he will give us more than we got from WUSU,just think overall he is a better play. Faster better ball handler bigger and he can shoot better. That’s just my MO.He will have toprove into the court. Think WUSU is making improvement waiting to see
how his deep shooting has progressed

Pinzon is long, smooth and can play.  Fiba is fantastic but he’s gotta get plenty of time working on what Mike  Anderson does. It’s gonna push him to get better.  He’s got a lot of tools though and I've been sold on this kid for a long time.

Interesting, a 3 star kid skips not only college but his senior year of high school to sign a pro contract in Italy.

Five players who blossomed at U19 World Cup

“Puerto Rico probably left Latvia a bit disappointed with their 14th place finish, but they have to be happy with the performance of Pinzon, who kind of formed a Big Three with Aaron Clark and Phillip Wheeler. Pinzon tried to help make up for the absence of Julian Strawther in getting others involved and he showed his excellent passing ability and decision making on the break.

It seems he has a bright future for Puerto Rico and part of the next generation along with Strawther and Andre Curbelo.Pinzon did not shoot the ball from long range as well as he could, but he did a lot of other things well. In addition to leading the team in scoring and assists, he was second in rebounds.”

Love the picture of the G from France dribbling the ball palms up at eye level. I remember when any dribble above the waist was called palming, carrying or traveling.

Under radar Frosh per Rothstein

Rafael Pinzon, St. John’s: St. John’s is in position to win a game in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000 and Pinzon could play a key role in reserve. The 6-5 freshman, despite Monte’s take, already has international experience and averaged an impressive 16.2 points and 4.6 rebounds this past summer at the U19 World Cup in Latvia. :)

Those were the days.

Yup. Low dribble and 3 or 4 steps was traveling and you would get thrown out of the gym for Eurostep or not boxing out and the big men always crashed the boards and you followed your shot.
End of Chapter 1.

"Under the radar where"??? Siberia??? If Rothstein bothered to read our board, he'd know that our fan base is already touting Pinzon as the Wooden Award Winner.  /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png I swear, in all my years as an SJU fan and Redmen board member, I can never remember a top 250 kid getting this much hype. Hell I can't remember many top 25 kids getting this much hype, but then again, it's been a while since we've had a top 25 kid. Granted, he is our highest ranked recruit this year so maybe that's it.

Monte.....I know you recently took a break from the board and, as a result, you might have missed worse.  Over the summer, several posters had Wusu in the NCAA Hall of Fame.

Perhaps the overrating is a bit exacerbated this year with some justified optimism.

I wasn't posting JF, but I was still reading. I did see a Wusu/Charles Barclay comparison. So the HOF prediction makes sense, I guess. Optimism is one thing, delusion is whole other. Think I may have  put myself back in self imposed exile, lest I continue to piss on everyone's parade.

I am very optimistic about this year, but agree with Monte, JF and others that we need to temper the enthusiasm regarding kids who have never played for SJU and/or never even played college basketball. I am not a fan of rankings and you don't need to look further than Champ, Posh & Wusu to make that case pretty convincingly.
But until I see Pinzon, Stanley, Traore & Nyiwe play a real game in Div I college ball, color me a skeptic. Always respect the opinion of those close to the program who have actually watched them practice with the team , but to be honest haven't heard a lot of that yet.

Agree with you 100% and as I have said from day one I hope Pinzon and Stanley each get 10-12 minutes a game to give them some learning burn and to ensure our starters don’t overplay and risk injury. Traoré and Nyiwe will hopefully get 5-6 minutes each a game and also slowly learn. Good teams can bring freshmen along slowly, I am truly hoping that is our case. We may loose a lot of players after this season and it would be a huge shame is these 4 first year players got absolutely no burn.

I think that much of our fanbase has been influenced by the meteoric rise of Champagnie. Thinking another diamond in the rough is right around the corner. Champ was an anomaly. No one saw this coming. Not college coaches, recruiters, no one!  And let me tell ya, it's a good thing we lucked out with him, because imagine where we'd be right now without him? But kids like Champ come around once in a blue moon. Wusu exceeded expectations, and looks to be a very serviceable 4 year player, but we're gonna need more then top 200-400 ranked kids who overachieve if we want to be a consistently successful program. I believe that every school that finished last year in the top 25, with the exception of Loyola, had a number of top 100 kids on their roster. No, rankings aren't everything, but the odds of a kid ranked in the top 100 having an impact at this level, are unequivocally greater then the odds of a kid ranked in the top 300. And generally speaking, the better schools consistently get top 100 kids. I do not see this blueprint(coaching up lower ranked kids) as a formula for sustained  success. I know I'm the exception, but that's how I feel. Still think we'll have a good year, just much more reserved in my optimism about the future.  I'm beaten down by the last 20 years.

All we need to know about Pinzon is when he committed " Happy " loved the commit and loves his game and last week when Happy and I went to lunch with Panther- Panther was really impressed with what he saw of Pinzon in practice. And Panther doesn't just throw our compliments and he was literally the first person to rave about LJ the first time he saw him in practice
