Coaching Staff

Let's all get off the ledge. It is way to early to give up on this coaching staff and team. We do have deficiencies in our front court which will be addressed next year. I believe with a bit more attention to defense and sharing the rock this team could surprise us!
I do believe that I would prefer a excellent "x" & "o" Div1 Head coach over Richmond!
I have been to 2 games this year thus far and frankly I don't see him contributing anything! Would love to get a guy like Dunlop back!

While I not a huge fan of CM as a coach and think he is continuing the school's trend of living in the past what bothers me the most is the coaching staff's lack of balance.

We started with CM as a figurehead / guard coach with St. Jean as the XO guy ???? and then slice and Matt A as the heavy recruiters.... now we have Mitch as another guard coach and still no one that can coach a big man. Like any roster needs balance so does a coaching staff.

I do not know if this is even a 15 win team. We have 2 wins. A long way to 15. If we end up with 12 or 13, does that mean the sky is falling? It shouldn't, but I expect the board will go into a collective seizure if 15 isn't achieved. It only took a 3 game losing streak to some good teams for the first thread to appear questioning Mullin's coaching ability. I could have spared everyone the suspense. He isn't a good coach yet. It would be an insult to every head coach that spent years of their adult life as an assistant to believe otherwise. He only has to be adequate to win, as long as he gets the talent he goes after. Better talent makes for better coaches. John Wooden won a lot of titles because he had great players. Same for Dean Smith and every other great coach. Not saying they didn't have a remarkable skill set. They did, with their greatest strength being the ability to get great players to play for them.

Coach D is history. Slice is history. Zendon working with big men is history.
The good news is we have an athletic director which we took over a year to hire.
We are. ......

For Mullin to get comfortable coaching, especially in game situations and subs, is going to take time. He obviously knows the game, but getting others to do what you see as obvious is not so easy.

I heard Bobby Hurley say, after he took the Arizona State job, that he finally felt comfortable with his decision making during in game situations. This from a guy who played His whole career for Hall of Fame coaches, and who played point guard on a national championship team. How many years was Hurley assisting his brother and coaching his own program before he moved to Arizona State?

Too early for this. Team is improving in many ways. A few players seemed like they may have regressed a little but it's only a few games into the year. Does anybody here think last years squad would have even been in these past 3 games? I don't even know if they would have won that Bing game. At the very least it would have been a nail biter.

This quite possibly may be one of the worst coaching staffs in Division 1 Basketball.

There are no adjustments made, we play 1 on 1 and chuck shots up the whole game. Numerous times Seth Davis said we may have individual talent but do not play as a team. Five games in no adjustments have been made. Lovett misses a selfish dunk, take him out.

It is extremely concerning that we have barely any Division 1 Coaching experience on this team as well.

I for 1 am not enamored with Mullin as I was not of age during his greatness. I look at him by progress and X&O's and I have seen absolutely nothing from him or Richmond that would make me they have any chance of succeeding in the future.

St. Jean looks like a psycho on the sidelines and that needs to be addressed.

Matt A is the only one who is doing a successful job.

I do not see the light at the end of the tunnel when ourcoaching staff is pathetic.

I dont think we would have gotten the current recruits without Mullin. But I agree they need to play a little more like a team. He is teaching them an NBA style which is what a lot of these young players want. But to give an example in the VCU game, he should have had all his 3 point shooters in there in the last 3 minutes. They needed to spread out, not rush the shot or play (even the announcer said they were rushing) and get a 3 point shot off or a drive to the basket. Instead they just seem to be out there on their own running NBA style up and down the court

This quiet possibly may be one of the stupidest posts ever written on this board and lord knows there have been thousands over the years.
We win 3 games very nicely showing a huge improvement from last year and a few of you are still and silent under your rock your live under. We loose 3 games to good competition, games in which we led which shows we were prepared going in , and Bucknasty slithers out.
Last year we heard how Mullin didn't coach and relegated the coaching duties to others , now he is coaching and animated during games but he is knocked for a lack of in game adjustments. Who do you want him to insert , Williams, Amar, Richard F ?
Any great suggestions.
We have 1 returning starter, 1 , the guy who touches the ball less than anyone on the roster, a 3 star center who was injured half the year , and we are expected to be good. ???????
Are you for real ?????
We have not had a full roster for 5 years , now we finally do.
We have had a roster full of problems, now we have not had an iota of trouble in over a year.
We have a talented roster and 3 more highly talented players coming in next season which will force 1 or 2 of the lesser talents to leave, but you can't see that.
Look across the country and tell me 5 schools that regularly overachieve with the talent they have. You can't.
It is about talent and experience and various combinations of same. We have some talent and zero experience. If you can't see that you are blind, stupid or a Mullin hater. But boy has our talent level been raised.
You don't want to see the good in the Staff and team don't but I clearly do and appreciate the effort and improvement.
I suggest you come back next season as this thread is way tooooooo premature unless you are a hater.

it's a friday night and most of us don't have to work tomorrow and the game is in an hour. I suggest everyone start drinking alcohol to make the posts even more enjoyable to read come game time and post game

3 years as an assistant, 3 years at Buffalo, 45 years talking basketball with his father.

The team is tied for #39 in the country in 3 pt. field goal % at 41%
Last year, the team was #275 in the country at 33%

That's a massive improvement. College B-Ball is a three-point game. The team has addressed the (probably) most important factor in winning in college b-ball - all in one off-season.

All the team needs to do now is tighten up on defense (may have to wait a year until the muscle arrives), and this is a good, solid program.

Free throw shooting, also improved:
This year: #207 @ 68%, from last year's 340th @ 64%. There is still room for improvement there, but the improvement is notable, particularly with Sima; at to some extent with Yakwe.

I too have reservations with the NBA style offense. I'm unsure if their play on the court is what the players are told to do, or if the players free-lance more than they are taught. Very hard to say.

It's still too early to judge anything at this point. Have to give it until the later part of next year before any judgement can be passed. It's a long time to be patient. Everyone knows, we've all be way too patient over the years, but that's what we have to do unfortunately.

Tonight's game will take the above #s down unfortunately. Yuck.

Credit Mullin for team not calling it quits. Would have been easy to do. Tough to have a bad trip to Atlantis but ST John's managed to do it.

This Atlantis tournament was the most competitive in years. Three nationally ranked teams and experienced and well coached teams like like VCU, Wichita State and ODU. LSU and St. John's were clearly the bottom of the field but almost every game played was competitive. Next year Villanova may have one team to challenge it for the championship.

I watched some of each of the three games. It just seemed that the players dont "play smart". Take a look at Ellison who has improved over last year. He makes a dumb foul at the end of the first half last night, so we go from a 3 point deficit to a 6 point deficit. And Bashir is another one who seems to think he has to turn his shoulder and push his way in every time he drives to the basket. He is also not careful on defense and putting it all together he becomes a fouling machine. I also think Mullin should stick with Mussini at the end of games. I thought he was starting to hit his shots when he got removed from the game. The whole thing is totally frustrating, losing time after time after time. The commentators say we will do better than last year but I am beginning to wonder.

In all four losses for whatever reason, they had those feared SJU droughts resulting in runs by opposition. Stopping the bleeding is not easy when your shooting is dismal & scoring is a proficiency of only two guys at this point. Lastly, as noted by many, ball movement has not been there. I guess stiffer competition & having limited offensive options can lead to that.

If this team does not learn how to play defense, man or zone, they're going nowhere. Good D can cover a lot of offensive deficiencies.

SJU is now at the time where some difficult decisions have to be made in moving the program up to the big east level. They have two recruits practicing who are expected to contribute next year coming from schools where they were not going to get playing time this year. SJU must do the same thing.
The staff should tell Matt to go get two more recruits who he thinks can contribute next year at the big east level and they will tell at least two of the current players at season's end it is in their best interest they go somewhere else to get playing time.
This is not a pleasant part of coaching at schools in major conferences but it has become part of the job.

Mullin has brought in perhaps the best back court the school has ever had.

Ray ... let's hope that the current back court of Messrs. Lovett and Ponds proves to be winning combination before overhyping them to be "perhaps the best back court the school has ever had".

I doubt that the Lovett/ Ponds combination would start on a majority of current Big East teams much less exceed (in no particular order) the following former StJ's backcourts:
Boots Thornton & Eric Barkley
Reggie Carter & Bernard Rencher
Mark Jackson & Mullin

You just compared two freshmen to two hall of famers and five NBA draft picks including a couple of first rounders. So whatever telling point you thought you were making, you didn't make it.

They're the best freshmen backcourt the school has ever had by a country mile. It's not even close. No one thinks they're as good as Reggie Carter and Rencher were as seniors. Newsflash: when Carter and Rencher were freshmen they weren't as good as Carter and Rencher were as seniors either.

I would send allebegovic and Ellison packing.
Unfortunately they are not Big East Players it is a tough job.

Also, might send Mitch Packing as well and get in a coach with D1 experience. Or move Mitch back to special assistant.

Not sure how this staff is going to compensate for the fact that we have not one effective low post player or effective 2G with D1 size. I caught some flack pre-season for saying that I wasn't crazy about having 2 under 6' guards with similar skill sets on the floor together the majority of the time, and having Sima and Yakwe together on the court the majority of the time. Unfortunately for as deep as we are, it's obvious at this point that we have limited options. We just don't have players that compliment each other. That won't change this year. With the arrival of Simon, Clark and hopefully Brown, that will change next year. I'm looking for incremental improvement this year individually and collectively.
