Coaching Staff

I believe, after 4 full seasons, Lavin is a mediocre COLLEGE BB Coach. His record says what he is, here at St John's. The things the fan base here have overwhelmingly voiced is he doesn't make Players better than when they arrived. And, forget Harkless. He was a exceptional talent, already for the NBA under one and done.

I'm also not a worshiper of his motivational skills. I think he's overrated. Hasn't really been able to get his team to win Clutch games consistently.

I think a lot of people confuse a good salesman from a good sales manager. They are far from the same thing. A good salesmen sells, a good sales manager assembles the right team(sports or otherwise) and motivates them to be successful. Lavin is a good salesman.

I don't think we have given Whitesell enough time. I think he'll really make his impact felt this season...very impressed with the way he speaks about the game. Big year ahead.

Players under Lavin may not show exceptional basketball improvement under his coaching, but I suspect that many of them emerge as better men from the experience of having played for Lavin and his team of coaches. In the long run that is far more important but it sure would be nice to kick some butt on the court for the next ten years.

That's all fine, but if the mission statement of the basketball program is to groom better men.......then I am no longer buying season tickets. I'll stay home, save my money, and read the heart warming stories later.
