Coaching Decision Poll

We're going to do this one-time, and one-time only:

The options are simplified, if you think it should be an extension with a low buyout...that's a "yes".

Let's get a sense of where the Redmen.com community stands on this, the primary issue surrounding the program.

It seems clear that no one side can claim to speak for the overwhelming majority of St Johns fans.

Silent majority cast their votes & stay under the radar, while we "loud mouths" try to dominate the board. :)

After hearing the way the departing Seniors spoke so highly of Lavin, plus all that Lavin had to go through personally here with the cancer, loss of his Father etc. Harkless and Sampson leaving early, I say extend him. D-Lo said at the press conference after the game that he was probably going to call Lavin everyday for the rest of his life. That says something. I know it's about wins and loses, I also realize that even though we have won 20 games two years in a row and three out of 5 years with two NCAA's, that we still expect a little more than that at this point. But, taking all factors into consideration, everything I mentioned, graduation rate etc. I say extend him with a low buyout. I would also either force hime to hire another recruiter, someone very well known and capable or hire another really x's and O's guy in addition to Whitesell. Just my humble opinion.

5 years was enough. 2 ncaa bids with 0 wins. His constant recruiting of the 6-7 type player with athletic ability. When will he ever get the 6-10, 7ft center that we never seem to recruit and we need so badly? I say Move On to another coach. Who? I'm sorry, I don't know.

I agree completely.

Unless they have a big time coach already lined up, let's see what Coach Lavin does in the next 3 years. A low buyout is a must. Things that show further improvement: A deeper bench with BE talent, less suspensions of key players come post season, a few wins in the BE tourney and NCAAs.

Like him or not, we have improved under his leadership, just not even close to the speed and level that we all hoped for.

There's a 7ft center sitting on our bench.

Who's inelidgible, and was a 3* recruit.
Theyre both big, but ADR is not Josh smith.

Good points by mean gene though, I didn't realize dangelo said that. I've been skeptical of his relationship with the players, but it appears to be genuine.

Would any of the no voters change their mind if the following occurs in the next few weeks;
1 Lavin gets extended which leads to
2 OB returns and
3 Jordan returns
Then Hoiberg leaves ISU to coach the Bulls which leads Diallo to sign with SJU
Next year is no longer a disaster

So, by your own admission, he hasn't done what you wanted him to. But, because he's better than Norm we should extend his contract?

Generally not the way good fortune runs at SJU. :)

Secondly, good riddance to Chris.

Only with a reasonable buyout at any point. I'm really surprised by the result of the poll, and I needed some distance from Friday's loss to have a clearer head.

I'm surprised by the results of the poll, and I even surprised myself with my vote. I've been a supporter of Lav's and am always optimistic about where things are going. This week pushed me over the edge, so I voted against bringing him back, although it wasn't an easy vote to cast. I like him and the way he cares for the players, but don't like the drama nor the lack of depth that heightens the impact of the drama. Having said all that, if the University decides to give him an extension, I will fully support Coach and the team and hope he helps us get better.

I voted yes, but I could go either way. I'm just not sure some of the names being thrown around on here are attainable, and then you're diving into worse candidates.

If we could get a heavy-hitter, then I say go for it. I'm skeptical.

My opinion is Lavin should not be retained. No surprise there.

Expectations, goals? Despite his own comments,I do not think he achieved what he said he would accomplish when he was hired. We are still the SLEEPING GIANT he proclaimed us to be. No advancement there.

He won 1 BE Tournament game in 5 years. With Norm's players. Did not win a NCAA GAME . Did not get his team's to really contend for a regular season BE Championship. He achieved mediocre results at best in Conference and, if you believe he had great talent from his own Recruits, he under achieved. look it up.

His style of COACHING and they way his teams play, was not conducive to a winning formula in the Big East.
I also believe he was outcoached by nearly every other Coach in the League, except Purnell . The game of Coaching changed from his years at ESPN. He did not adjust.

He is overrated as a Recruiter. He did not get enough or the right kind of player for this league. No Big men with a well rounded game. Obepka was/is a 1 trick pony and, never developed enough offensive skills. And, size wise, he was smaller than most post players he encountered and rarely rebounded well or, on the offensive boards. And, attitude wise was a negative for the team. He should never play again in a St John's uniform and doubt he will or, remain in the school.

The BE Commissioner, Val Ackerman, expressed a rather severe admonishment to our Program as soon as the Obepka suspension occurred . It happened under Steve's watch and he bears responsibility. I think the University will value that as evidence Lavin's Team was out of control at times, in the locker room and, off the COURT.

Lavin had 5 years and did not meet the goals, expectations required of this Program.

Suspensions, failed drug tests, ineligibility, players leaving the team unannounced, recruiting suspicious characters, guys refusing to check back into games, hugely overpaid staff, taking years off of recruiting, alienating NYC High school coaches, Robert Morris thumping, deflecting responsibility, star guard blatant disregard for Carnesecca arena, failure to respect SJU tradition( we don't need to hear about John Wooden), 7-18 in March, 2-9 in postseason tournaments, lack of player development etc etc etc.

Where do I sign up?

Hyperbole. So, all of his wins against Big East coaches, outside of Purnell, happened in spite of him, based on the quote above, right? If that is what you're saying, then that's extremely disingenuous, and can't be taken seriously.

I voted yes but if they could get Howland I would sign up for that instead. I just would like a coach for the long term and don't want someone who would look for a bigger job. I'm Fairly certain Howland would be here 10+ years.
