Columbia should pony up the money and keep Smith. They just advanced to the finals of the CIT and set a school record with 24 wins.

Agree, but Smith is a West Coast guy who may finding heading home attractive.

UNLV still debating on whether to move forward on Arkansas Little Rock’s Chris Beard or NM State’s Marvin Menzies.

So has any source actually mentioned Lavin's name, or is that wishful thinking that originated here?

He's not making more as a commentator than he would as a coach, and studio work will always be there for him when he flames out again.

Exactly. I think he has found his Niche in TV and comparing him to the other tv guys I think he does a real good job. Not sure what the UNLV job pays but my guess is 750ish to 1 mill ? I gotta believe that's a lot more than what he is getting paid at fox and if it wasn't then I wouldn't leave but I'm pretty sure he was interested in the job

UNLV paid Lon Kruger a little over one million and Dave Rice $800,000. They offered Mick Cronin over two million. It seems there are boosters willing to pony up, depending on which coach is involved. Lavin's name is mentioned every time the topic comes up, whether print or radio. He is very connected here, but they don't know the whole SJU story. They think Lavin was unjustly fired. The current AD at UNLV is not very perceptive and she is being used by coaches pretending to be interested. At this stage, I would guess Menzies will get the job.

Chris Beard it is. Interesting hire, but keep in mind UNLV has had to fire its football, baseball and basketball coaches in the last year and a half. The athletic dept. is a total train wreck. The best new hire, the current football coach, was essentially recruited and hired by a big booster - Fertitta family.

He'll certainly be charming in the interview, but if it comes down to discussing actual coaching philosophy, I think Kyle Smith is going to win out.

Interesting that Georgia Tech's top 2 candidates have direct relationships with other ACC programs. Capel is obviously a Coach K disciple and their rumored second choice Jay Larranaga is the son of the Miami coach.

Would make some interesting games down the road.

Does he jeopardize that by going to Tech and possibly not doing well?

Absolutely. But Coach K like his mentor Coach Knight doesnt strike me as someone who sees himself as "too old" at age 69. I am sure Coach K plans to coach another 5 years so that's a long time to just wait around...meanwhile if Wojo all of a sudden has great success at Marquette as a head coach, he could surpass Capel as the heir apparent while Capel is just sitting in the 2nd seat at Duke.

That being said, Capel going to Tech and doing well probably solidifies himself as the choice over everyone...he's had the greatest success of all former K players already at VCU and Oklahoma (though he also failed), so doing it in the ACC would probably seal the deal that he's the one.

That being said, no former K player has taken an ACC job --- it almost seems intentional that they go elsewhere so as not to be competing with their sensei Master Splinter. So not sure this one will necessarily have K's seal of approval either....
