Coach

I'm not sure it's all lavins coaching but it's more about the types of players he filled our roster with!!! Insane athletes with very little basketball skill or iq!!! Look at when obepka took that 15 ft jumper...that kid should no his role and immediately get back under the hoop!!!! We have 3 great athletes on the floor, only Jordan and dlo have actual skill

I've stated that we need a wing player who can shoot and create his own shot. We're missing such a player.

Sanchez could be that player, but he seems too passive nor his jumper seems consistent enough. But I do believe you can add Sanchez into the equation of Harrison and Jordan, in regards to being skillful.

Can you imagine if Dom had a jumpshot? Would completely change the team's dynamic. He passes up 10 open shots every game, maybe more.

Harrison Jordan and maybe primo are our only capable skilled basketball players.... Lavin recruited this team to pressure and run....our only true offense comes from turnovers! I'm telling u guys this will be a long season....

I think Jordan is going to takeover the rest of the season. He drained a three and a mid range jumper against Xavier. His jumper is starting to show up.

Back to the topic of the thread, we could beat Georgetown and opinions will begin to change on Lavin. that is why we should wait to the end of the season before judging what he has done. We could go on and win every single game for the rest of the year and we will all look dumb for questioning him. Honestly, I do not like where we are right now either, I do not think anybody does, but last time I checked the regular season ends in March, not January. As I said in another thread, if we keep playing poorly and do not make the NCAAs at the end of the year, I will question Lavin being at the head of the team. But the season needs to play out, the product on the floor hasn't always been great this year, but have we looked bad all year? NO! We had stretches against #2 Syracuse and #4 Wisconsin where we looked worthy of being on the court with them. So nobody should act like we have played terrible basketball all year, cause that isn't true.

Going off of what mkras said, in that 2010 season, we didn't get that highly coveted "quality win" until Jan. 3 against GTOWN. Which is ironically tomorrow. So we have a prime example that lacking a quality win by January is not the end of the world. We can turn this around, lets root for the team to do so, and wait until the end of the year before seriously calling for Lavin's head.

Well, we neither pressure nor run most times! According to your assessment then Lavin misuses the players he has and has basically recruited poorly since only Jordan and Harrsion (IMO) are pure basketball players. Most of the others (with the exception of Mo) were highly rated projects or gambles. Players like Pelle, Lindsey, Polee, Garrett, Greene, Branch, Gift, Obekpa, Pointer and even Sampson all have serious flaws as has been evident. This year we may end up with even more damaged goods in a transfer or unranked project like Adonis. Most of this group will be gone by 2016 so even if we get lucky with Briscoe and Diallo, where are the role players coming from? Certainly none from this current group.
As for this season, I have seen enough to believe this team will need to get an automatic bid to get into the NCAA tourney.

He is firmly on the hot seat, I was about to start a thread on this topic. For all the people out to bash Norm and rightfully so, what has Lavin done better other than take Norm's guys to the dance once?

What has Lavin done better than Norm? How about recruit in the top 100 from the get go, including an NBA first round pick, and more recently the 17th best player in the nation. Do you think Norm recruited talent at that level?

Everyone is different in terms of how they view things. You clearly take pride in a one-and-done kid rotting away in Orlando. That's fine. You also seem to think positively of his recruiting prowess.

Unfortunately for you and I, those things you take pride in do nothing for us on the basketball court.

Top 100 recruits mean nothing. Amir Garrett isn't a top 100 quality player yet he was ranked highly. Once you get to 30-100 on those lists nobody truly knows how good a player can be.

You are harping on things that are supposed to build a program's profile. I'm harping on the only things that really matter. Winning and making players better. Lavin has shown he can't do either consistently.

All in all, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, and many other schools get their share of top 20. Lavin penetrated the top 100 easily, something Norm failed to do. Clearly Lavin is a better recruiter, which is the one thing Norm was supposed to do. You need players first and foremost. IF we haven't secured a bid by the end of next season, then we can talk about our next coach. If that were to happen, I think Lavin may take flight on his own, and may do so if he has the type of success he had at UCLA

Recruiting is the only thing he can do! If you can't coach players then what good is recruiting? Amir stunk his two years here, Phil Greene makes awful decisions and still doesn't have a clue how to play point, dlo had an attitude adjustment that personally did nothing(he still talks so much crap out there). If these performances came from us last year I think we'd all be satisfied. This year we expected to be a top 20 team and that is just not panning out.

So, you're blaming him on Greene's inability to play point. Don't get me wrong.... Lavin should only play Greene at the point when Jordan or Branch has 4 fouls apiece, but it really isn't Lavin's fault that Greene isn't a point guard. Blame Lavin for using Greene at the 1 spot, but don't blame him for Greene not being a point guard.

You're also blaming him on Harrison's attitude? Did you think Harrison was gonna totally stop running his mouth after a year removed? People can change, but they don't usually change that quickly. How about giving Lavin some credit for Harrison returning after his suspension. Most players would've packed their bags and hit the hills right after they were removed from the team for something other than grades.

Now that people see his prized recruits all are either borderline d league players and bound for Europe who will want to play here?

I seem to hear we're in very, good shape for Diallo and Briscoe. Of course, we shouldn't get excited 'til they sign on the dotted line. But we're certainly in the thick of it. You can't win it, unless you're in it.

I'm certainly not blaming Greene for stinking. He couldn't dribble into the paint if his life depended on it.

LOL Kinda funny.

Some things you've mentioned may have some merit (doesn't feel like typing much and about to head out shortly to respond to the rest).

But I'll say one thing.... I'd plant Sampson on the bench, if doesn't show the propensity to pass the ball.

Who has called for Lavin's head? I think he has done a lousy job coaching this group and have said so; I never once called for his firing and I don't recall anyone else doing so either. Can we turn this around? Of course, this is sports and the beauty of sports is you never know what will happen. Is there any evidence this team will turn it around? IMO, no, but that doesn't mean it can't or won't happen. As far as rooting, do you think my passion (negatve as it is now) would come from anyplace other than being a diehard fan? But having said that, why should we wait to criticize until the end of the year? If we go on a 20 game winning streak and tear down the nets in March that doesn't change the fact that we are playing lousy ball up to now (IMO). Frankly, if I thought this team was lousy and was playing up to its potential I wouldn't say a word, I'd accept it for what it is.

You guys need to RELAX !!!! I am not happy with these losses either. The Penn State game should of been a win, but the other three were against good teams. Yes, we could of won those games, just as we could of lost a game or two we won. Lav is a GREAT recruiter, we ALL know that. Im very happy that he can bring in players. As far as him coaching, nothing will matter "if" we make the dance and play really well in it. If i knew we could lose 10 games and make the tourney and do good in the tourney, id be happy. We need to win against these better teams, yes, and this group has loads of talent. But, as mad i am about this team not living up to any expectations, come the big dance, we will know. What we know now is this team needs to play better. I still have faith in Lav and there are only a handful of coaches id rather have. Lets all just relax a little and hope this team picks up a win or two the next two games. Just my 2 cents. Go Johnnies !!!!

Perhaps we can all accept that, net of Fordham & second half of Cuse game, we have not played very well. Also, is it so unfair to conclude we have not evidenced continuous improvement to date? Not on a ledge, but still waiting for a more cohesive, well prepared, competitive team. Let's start that with road win at GT! It is not too late to be the team we expected. On the other hand, it is not so early that we should ignore results thus far.

That is zero revelation.
By the way Norm was not hired to recruit and win, maybe in your mind, but not that of Father Harrington. He was hired to run a clean program no more no less. Winning was secondary so please try to accept that.
Four years with his own players to get to the Big Dance? I cant believe how low your standards are. The team is filled with high level experienced talent in a watered down conference. No reason we should not dance this season.
So it seems to me you are saying that Norm and his bunch of friends, as many here referred to the prior staff, were a superior group of coaches since their records are similiar but one had no good talent since he couldn't recruit while the other is surrounded by talent. You can't have it both ways.

If we win @ G-Town then SJU will be where most of us expected, 1-1 with a split for the 2 road games.
Guess we`ll see what this team has on Saturday, will they bounce back or play like crap like during the second half at X

Time will tell. Sanchez needs to step the hell up. Everyone said he would have been our best last year, maybe Sanchez is to soft to "want it", If I`m lavin I tell him:
"If you want in the NBA next year, then you can`t wait any longer. It`s time to be a BEAST and do your thing. Keep playing soft then no NBA for you." It`s up to him.
Anyone here think he can avg 17pnts and 10boards from here on out? I know he likes getting assists, well that would come after everyone sees Sanchez is becoming a beast and they gang up on him, then pass it to Harrison or Jprdan for 3.
Hopefully they hit.

ClapClapClap He recruits top100 from the get go. Now the thing is can he coach these top100 to win?

Look at the positive. Not a SINGLE team has been able to blow us out this year. Even in Carnesecca's heyday, we could play a top 5 team and get our doors blown off. What makes the Indiana loss in the holiday festival in 1975 was that we played the eventual national champion to a draw when they could have crushed us. I know this is very frustrating, but there have been signs that this team can play at a very high level, and I think there was a false belief that we had come together after blowing out Fordham. I have a feeling that we will get our share of wins. Before the Xavier game, I predicted 8 to 11 wins. I'd still stand by that prediction.

When did Coach Lou get blown out?????
In January 1982 we were loosing at half-time to the best team I have ever witnessed 42-9 I believe.
In the second half we played them very even after Coach made adjustments.
The next season we beat Georgetown twice, in 1984 when they won the NCAA we beat them once.
Please what blowouts are you talking about? I saw 1 in 10 years.
Again, please stick with the truth.

So now our standard is we are not getting blown out

There is no way Sanchez can average 17 and 10. His biggest supporters like myself know he never had a chance of doing that.

See and to me those would be good stats to have. If I would have said 24 and 12 then i`d understand people saying "no way". So by you saying: "he never had a chance", then you`re saying Lavin is holding him back?

Well that`s exactly my point. If I`m coach, I go with my best atleast 35minutes only to give them alittle rest, unless they`re in foul trouble. But Lavin is the coach so whatever.

Look, I was at the very first coach's clinic that Norm did for area coaches before he coached a single game for us. One of the first things he said was that there was one main difference between us and him - he was getting paid a lot of money to coach and we weren't. Then he said another main difference was that if he didn't win, he'd get fired. So please stop this total nonsense that Norm was paid to run a clean program and winning wasn't important. He was paid $600,00+ to run a clean program AND TO WIN. Norm couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag and anyone who knows basketball knew that. Lavin started with nothing zero in year 2. In a lot of ways, similar to Norm's year 1. So now we are in Lavin's year 3 with his own players, and one of those years he had cancer. The expectation is much higher, his salary is much higher, the players are much better, and the program is much stronger. The only point of agreement I'd have with you is that sooner or later Lavin must produce.

On the other hand, it is not so early that we should ignore results thus far.

There is no way Sanchez can average 17 and 10. His biggest supporters like myself know he never had a chance of doing that.

I'd love for Sanchez to average 17 and 10 the rest of the way, so when I see you at the NCAA's I'll buy you the biggest, greasiest burrito, and hope the men's room lines are 100 deep all game. :)

Mar 6, 1987 vs Providence (neutral location) L 51 - 80
Jan 21, 1984 vs Georgetown L 61 - 83
Jan 31, 1982 at Georgetown L 46 - 63
Jan 6, 1982 vs Georgetown (neutral location) L 42 - 72
Jan 31, 1981 at Georgetown L 46 - 63
Jan 6, 1981 at Georgetown L 42 - 72
Dec 4, 1979 at Tennessee L 80 - 97
Feb 19, 1977 at Syracuse L 55 - 79.
Mar 13, 1976 vs Indiana (neutral location) L 70 - 90
Jan 5, 1974 at Dayton L 58 - 82
Mar 2, 1974 at Providence L 67 - 85
Dec 30, 1971 at Maryland L 69 - 90
Feb 2, 1971 at Villanova L 82 - 99

Lots of other examples, season by season, but no one was reaching for the Midol. Don't make ridiculous commentary - it just looks foolish

Lavin is what his record says he is. Take away the year with Norm's players and he pretty much sucks. I'd kill for two or three years with Cluess.

please return to hibernation
