How long is Lavin's leash until he is on the coaching hot seat.

Top recruiting classes and no results.
Getting paid a lot of money from St. John's standards.

I hope we don't suffer too long. If you read the UCLA blogs it is scary. It is the same exact issues......strong recruiting, terrible coaching, non-existent offense.

Lavin seems to have learned nothing since the UCLA experience. I hope we don't go too long with him. My guess is that he will start feeling heat at the end of this year. The student body will continue to bring the Lavinwood signs and support unconditionally. However, knowlegable basketball fans will grow restless......especially while the team continues to be unable to run anything in the half court offense.

Hate to say it, but I don't think we can do better. Can't see another, more established coach wanting to come here. Only chance would be to take another "Norm Roberts like" chance, and hope it works out this time.

We are 9-4 with two close losses to top 5 teams, a neutral court OT loss to a Big 10 team because our best FT shooter missed a game winning FT (coach can't control that), and a road loss to a team that has an NBA first round pick and has made 13 of the last 16 NCAA tournaments. We have no bad losses and we haven't been blown out. It's not THAT bad. Coach at least gets to see his first seniors play next year before the seat even gets warm.

Do you remember the dark ages? I still think we make the tournament this season. Let's not overreact.

I disagree. The knock on Lavin at UCLA, according to the late CRGreen, was that he placed his friends as assistants instead of going out and getting a tactician. He went out and got the best in the business in Dunlap when he was hired and then he replaced him with Whitesell this year. Whitesell is getting more and more involved in the strategy from what I can see on TV, and I doubt his full influence will be felt for another 6 weeks.

Ridiculous thread. No results? Why don't you let the year play out before you proclaim this season as a "no result" season. There are 18 more games to play. Step off the ledge and cheer for your team.

And sorry, but I don't view Lavin's season here as no results by any means. If you do, you may be rooting for the wrong team. We aren't Duke or Kentucky. Those results may suit you better.

I agree Lavin's position is safe for a few years. He will outlast Phil Greeneand God's Gift . So, once they graduate he won't be starting them against top competition in key games. This will help him preserve his position.

You keep harping on no bad losses and ignore the fact we have no good wins and just do not even remotely look like a well-coached team, we more often look like a team without a clue.

This is a problem. Thankfully there's a lot of season left for things to turn around.

Actually, I didn't expect to win at Xavier, but the great thing about the new Big East is that for now we have home and home series. We WILL beat them on our home court. We aren't a 13 win team, but I do believe we will win on the road against some decent competition. I'm on the side of believing that this season will be an exciting season.

Have to agree. This is a first look ever at Xavier in Cincinnati and they are tough at home. It was a four point game for a good part of the second half but the Johnnie's could not hit that big shot to get it to a one possession game. It's just as Looie always said. A win on the road in the league is like 2. Hopefully we get one at Georgetown.

The point is we are paying to actually have big success.
We should have a big win or two after top ten recruiting classes.

There is a lot of season left and I am hoping and looking for signs this can be turned around. It is just hard to find any.

The only hope I have is based on the turnaround in Hardy's senior year. We really could use some of CRGreen's optimism right about now.

I was thinking the same thing Mkras. The only issue I have with thinking that way is that back then we played in a much better Big East conference, where almost every night you were playing a ranked team and had a chance at a high quality win. To this point, we don't have those opportunities in this league outside of Villanova. Depending on how the rest of the season plays out for the conference, this could become an issue come selection Sunday. We don't have the luxury we did back then with regard to strength of conference and conference schedule. That's why I feel we need to turn it up now. We need to win these next 5 in row.

Good staff or not, ultimately what you see on the court is a reflection of the head coach. Certainly the split second in-game decisions (IE time outs, adjustments, substitutions, etc),which oftentimes make the difference between a win and loss, fall flatly on the shoulders of the head coach. With all due respect to the late CRGreen, and his defense of Lavin as a coach, his immensely talented teams at UCLA oftentimes looked extremely poorly coached and we are seeing the same thing here. Whatever intangibles/innate instincts that the very good/great head coaches posses, Lavin seems to be lacking. We will win some games moving forward on talent and because the opposing team is having an off game, I don't expect many where we will feel as though our staff outcoached the opposing one.

He is firmly on the hot seat, I was about to start a thread on this topic. For all the people out to bash Norm and rightfully so, what has Lavin done better other than take Norm's guys to the dance once?

By far the biggest problem with this coach is his inability to make guys better. Jakarr has arguably regressed this year! The kid is still a nice player but he has not shown me anything by way of improvement. Same goes for Harrison and Dom. I'd absolutely love for us to go dancing this year. For goodness sake all my team's stunk/stink these days. I'm not holding my breath for this guy to lead us to our goal for the season. Like Norm he is a nice guy. He is a stud recruiter. He is also a horrible basketball coach.

It would not be premature to get rid of this guy if somehow we don't win 21 games and go to the tournament. I'd say give him another year due to illness, etc. but I've seen enough. No offensive ingenuity, little ability to make in-game adjustments, a complete failure in giving his team an identity. Basically 3 years in to his major recruiting class, and we played on Tuesday devoid of 3 important things: Confidence, leadership, intelligence. Lavin is the guy you'd have to point your finger at.
