Coach Lav

Ed Cooley is doing a really good job at Providence, and has them moving in the right direction.

His record there in his 3rd season is 50-39 and 19-27 in conference.

Lavin is 61-55 and 26-33 in his 4th season. If you remove the year he did not coach, his record is 48-36 and 20-21.

It seems to me that they have very different styles. Cooley is on them early and often and doesn't hide the fact that he wants them bad. Lavin is more of a cool customer...perhaps playing a little hard to get to avoid looking desperate. I think that's why we hear if him out more when we are winning and getting good buzz.

Lavin has beaten Cooley head to head for Sampson, Obekpa, and Sanchez.

If it comes "head" to "head" Lavin would always win on looks alone!

Maybe but you guys are completely ignoring the influence of their Karma ratings.

Just to be clear (because I'm down with the groupthink), if STJ wins tonight do I start liking Lav again or does he still have a long way to go to reclaim my heart?

Thanks in advance.

They have to dance.

Win or lose today they will not make the dance without winning the BE. They are fighting for 6th place to be in a position to play only 3 games. They will not have the stats to get an at-large bid and the staff knows it. Every game will be a chess match and only a checkmate in the BE championship game will right the ship. Next best would be to win the NIT in NYC for recruiting purposes.

For me, the only thing that gives Lav a second chance, is the dance. Even then, probably not.

I can't remember the last time I observed a coach so negligent in blowing a season. The following are four adjustments that people on this board pleaded for over the span of three months. When coach finally instituted these adjustments, we started winning. The fact that it took three months (and 5 straight conference losses) is reprehensible.

1. Shortening and settling on a rotation
2. Less Phil Greene at PG
3. More Jamal Branch
4. Start pressing

Please......I hope someone else is coaching 2015's youngest team in America.

Your points are all good but I think the most important reason for the teams winning is the improved play of Jordan and to a lesser extent Obepka's offensive play.

Agreed. More playing time for Jordan was another board concensus, but I don't think many saw Opekpa's sudden emergence coming.

More Jamal Branch? Last game he played 3mins, the Marquette game he only played 15, the Creighton game he played 23, and the Butler game he played 26. If anything his playing time has decreased as of late.

23 and 26 isn't a lot of time? College basketball games are 40 minutes, not 300

Not really true.

We have eight games left.

8-0 we are in.
7-1 we are on the right side of the bubble if we win a game or two in tournament.
6-2 and anything less, than you are right

Is it totally out of the question to make the tournament if they go 6-2 with wins over Geo and Xavier and finish 10-8 in the league. Who knows how Prov. Xavier. and Geo. are going to finish?
Then win twice in the BE tour. and finish 22-12. That might put them on the bubble and winning 13 out of the last 17 would be a plus. I guess that makes tonight's game so important. Need a win over a rated team

My girlfriend made a comment about not liking Coach's outfit to which I sarcastically replied "you joined this site too?" Great win for the team and the staff.

LOL! Did she also say he should wear a tie? ;-)

No but she groans whenever Greene takes a shot, Obekba gets fouled, and they show our cheerleaders. Not a bad catch for me

Every time they show the cheerleaders, I realize how old I am
To me, they look like they belong in middle school :)

While the ban on saying anything nice about Lav has yet to be lifted (according to the collective), perhaps there will be less overt enthusiasm for Bob Hurley or Pitino Marsala and their respective powerhouse programs in Kingston and Riverdale respectively.
