Cluess

Thie Moser offer (if true) has to be embarrassing to Cluess. At what point does he say FU St. John’s?
Not really. He does have a $2.5m buyout. That is a major roadblock that has nothing to do with whether or not he's their favorite choice.
I don't believe that. Cluess can give them no recourse if he wants out, buyout or not. They can pay him to keep him off the sidelines, but no one wants an unhappy guy on the bench who was roadblocked. I think it can be negotiated down. The pricetag they put on him are like handcuffs. Schools with that kind of money aren't going to come calling, and schools that would be interested won't pay that. Basically, they screwed his future opportunities.

No, as I said on another thread, the buy-out isn't really the problem. Big boy schools pay them all the time. It was not unreasonable protection for Iona to have negotiated. What is at fault is SJU's legacy costs due to the poor decisions made in the past (Slice, etc.) that cause restraints on what the school, can spend now. And, someone still has to explain to me why CM is owed 2 years salary if in fact he resigned. THAT would be a ludicrous contract provision if that were in his deal (which I doubt since no lawyer would be that stupid to allow that kind of provision in an employment contract, no matter how much leverage or perceived leverage the hire had).

Boomer and Gio this morning saying they're hearing there’s a power struggle going on within SJU Admin and Cragg is not being allowed to make his own choice. I know they’re not the most informed when it comes to college hoops, especially local, but even if there’s just a semblance of truth to this, does not bode well for us.
Zach B disputed that on twitter. He said the uncertainty about the job is on Moser's end. He, and his family, love it in Chicago.

If I were trying to sell Moser on the job, I'd point out the obvious similarities between New York and Chicago. In fact, I've always felt that Chicago is the one U.S. city that you can move to New York from, and not experience too much of a culture clash, in general. It's the city that's most like ours, IMO.

Now, with school age kids, things are different. You never know how they will react, but my guess is (and it's only a guess, no inside info) that the family will work this out, and that Moser will take the job.

A no thank you from Moser means Cluess offer or Circus continues? “PT Barnum Oliva” is quite capable of continuing his Joe DiMaggio like blunder streak

Not getting into an argument about the merits of Chicago compared to NY, but I disagree. Yes it is the third or fourth largest city in the US, but they act small town in many ways, especially regarding their teams.

I think Boston and Chicago have a lot more in common.

As far as taking this job, it does come with a certain risk. Everyone knows, he has a job for life at Loyola. That final four has made him bullet proof.

So people will stay in a desert or a major city like Chicago...but no one wants NY freaking C? Players leave NYC area and so do coaches now? I know it's pricey but surprising no one wants to be here.

Excellent point about Chicago and Boston being more alike than NY. I agree both Cities share more of a small town atmosphere that is not prevalent in NY .

Regarding the Cluess $2-$3 million buyout: Wouldn’t the Board of Trustees have some kind of fiduciary responsibility to not knowingly agree to pay out an amount that is egregiously out of line with industry norms?

NY cost of living is substantially higher than Chicago in addition to whatever cultural differences there might be. A portion of whatever raise he gets will be eaten away. You have to have a lot of confidence in yourself that you will succeed to want to come to St. John's. Lavin had been in LA for years, loved Manhattan and didn't have kids and Mullin was from NY and had substantial resources already. I am sure if they were offering Moser $2 million a year guaranteed for 6 years like those two, he would be here in a NY minute but I am pretty sure the offer is a lot less than that.

Not demonstrably true, and trey also have a fiduciary responsibility to run one of the school's revenue centers, as well as reputation and publicity-producing activities, correctly, which hasn't bothered them it seems recently.

It's not substantially higher. It's pretty darn close actually. Taxes differ for sure.

What other mid-major coach has that kind of buyout or even close? The highest one I have seen is Oats at $1 million and that was coming off an NCAA Tourney win against Arizona.

I believe it was mentioned, that the extension Oates signed about a month ago, made the buyout around $3 million.

Alabama's football program prints money for the athletic department (and Saban is not going anywhere anytime soon), so they still were able to fork it over without any hesitation.

The extension Oats just signed and buyout you reference pertains to his new job as head coach for a team in the SEC - a power 5 high-major conference. When he was mid-major, his buyout was $1 million.

I was interviewing years ago for a job there. There was about 10% difference. That seems super excessive there based on that comparison. Rent is pretty much the same in the city limits. I've been there countless times and haven't felt like I'm saving on any expenses I incur. Again I know taxes were lower but that difference you posted seems excessive.
