Cluess
If Cluess could recruit really well and had similar success at Richmond or so I’d take him. MAAC to BE is huge jump. I said we needed to get Oats while we could and after all the “waiting it out” and “being patient”, he was poached by Bama. The weak and timid get eaten alive. The aggressors win.
According to prognosticators before the tournament, PAC 12 is the weakest of major conferences by far, so should we discount Hurley's accomplishments. This is pretty much historical and why for decades eastern teams were sent out west to fill brackets.

In trying to be fair to all the candidates are we sure Cluess would take the job? I mean he has a nice gig there. Every March he knows he will be in NCAA tourney and New Rochelle is nicer than Queens.

If he wasn't interested, then that tells you everything you need to know.

TC isn't the sexiest pick in the world, but he's beeen a winner at every level he's ever coached. Has a good eye for talent who fit his style. As for the MAAC trepidations, Cooley came from Fairfield (with an inferior resume to Cluess) and McCaffery has had success post Siena, so can it Marillac. Would love for him to have a NCAA signature win or been more competitive in his tournament games, but I think it's likely that Cluess' prior successes will translate. I'd be fine with the hire even if doesn't get the juices flowing like Pitino or Hurley.

Cooley was 20 years younger than Cluess when hired at Providence, McCaffery 10 years younger when hired at Iowa.

Sure, I'm just trying to poke a hole in the false narrative being perpetrated that successfull MAAC coaches can't succeed in bigger conferences.

I think TC would be a good fallback hire if we miss on Hurley or whomever else is on the 'short' list, Brey, Dawkins, Rhoades, Odom?
But there is a risk that Cluess would not be able to adjust his recruiting strategy to the high-major level.
Does he have solid HS or AAU contacts?
Which is why, IF he were to be our ultimate choice, I'd hope that Cragg injects the likes of Borman and / or Hsu into the AC mix, and I wonder if Cluess would bring Grasso with him.
Total guesses on my part, just noodling.

Pure speculation, but having coached in this area his whole adult life, I would think he has good HS/AAU contacts. No clue how he can close on 4/5 star types. Would think his offensive style would appeal to them. Staff composition is extremely important without a dobut. Goes for any hire. If Mullin had a second recruiter and seasoned X's and O's guy, he would still be our HC.

I heard the same crap 20 years ago about Bielien and McKillop not being able to recruit at Big East level. What a pile of sh-t that turned out to be. That is ultimate Fake News 18 years prior to the term Fake news going viral

My understanding is that John Beilein was approached about the StJohn's position when he was a Richmond and he was n ot interested in living in NYC.

My only issue with Cluess is his teams play little to no defense. As was made painfully obvious this past season, no defense plus no rebounding = no wins in the Big East. If someone can point me to a time in his head coaching career where at least statistically, his teams were upper echelon in their conference defensively, I’m open to reversing my opinion.

Heard he talked to SJU today. I think it is moving in that direction.

Heard local prep coaches singing his praises.

Will get Hsu among others to join.

This can't be good for the Huley hopes!

I can’t knock Cluess as a choice. He’s definitely not a flashy hire, but he’s a winner for sure and I liken him a bit to Mckillop who was also overlooked forever but won everywhere. If he hires some powerful recruiters, I think he can do a real good job and he still has a chip on his shoulder and want some to be here. I’d still prefer Hurley, but Cluess has a real good record everywhere and I think a real good coach. Would be far from an exciting hire, but winning is really all that matters and Cluess knows his X’s and O’s.

This would be Cluess’s last job. This is the job he always wanted which there is something that can be said for that. Too schools are hiring coaches with huge salaries like Oats, who have done a lot less that Cluess. He does coach an exciting style of ball offensively. I have some concern about defense but that could change if maybe we have an assistant who has some real defensive prowess. Main thing is having multiple recruiters on the bench. Cluess would be in all the gyms for sure though and I don’t think he’d be outworked locally. Not sexy but he’s prepared to do the job and has a ton of experience.

That kinda stuff is overplayed IMO.

On one hand, we have a 60 year old who currently makes around $550k a year and has no high-major coaching experience.

On the other hand, we have a 66-year old who until recently was making $6 million a year, is widely considered one of the top 5 NCAA coaches of all time and due to circumstances that basically every elite school has experienced, is now available at a price we can afford.

If we choose Cluess, I will be depressed.
