Classic Classless Move by Southerland at the end

Boeheim chewed his ear off. Suspention is overkill. Time to end this thread.

One game wouldn't kill the kid and might make him into a finer young man.

Are people REALLY upset about this?? A suspension?? SACK UP. Who gives a flying you-know-what that he dunked at the end of the game. That stuff is so overblown. The players on this team arent butt hurt by it and neither should we. They won the game and thats all that matters. I guarantee that our players didn't get their feelings hurt by a dunk at the end. Nobody cares.

Totally Agree with you on this.

This board is getting really bad at complaining about everything that doesn't go St. John's way. We lose a recruit and it's how much money they were offered, we lose a game and the refs were against us, the other team is classless. Boeheim and other coaches are whining.

This whole thread is a bunch of posters whining, suck it up and move on.

By nature fans aren't objective. I have neither the inclination nor the time to go on the Cuse board but my guess is that much of the same type of whining/complaining goes on there and on most other boards. FWIW as far as whining coaches go, undoubtedly Boeheim is right near or at the top. Always has been.

The whole point is that if you just tell a kid, who obviously is classless, he did the wrong thing, he learns nothing. If you hurt him by suspending him for one game on a championship team he is NEVER going to do something that STUPID again!  He embaressed his coach, his team and mostly himself, which he didn't even realize. He is a kid and he is here to learn, not be pushed through so he has no class in life. That is what this step in the process is all about. This is where these kids not only learn the game but what it takes to be a decent human being.

Greg it would take a special kind of coach/teacher to do that. Boeheim ain't cut from that cloth.  In fairness to Southerland, it may have just been an impulsive move. Not so sure I would go so far as to label the kid "classless". Unless of course he has a pattern of behavior that I'm not aware of.

Monte, I totally understand your position, however if there are no consequences in life there is no lesson. Therefore there is no learning. This is the problem in our society today. Parents do not teach their children that there are consequences for their actions. They shove it aside and don't do the work needed because they are too lazy to actually parent their kids. My wife is a teacher and sees the results of this every day. We have to start making the little things important again in order to save this society. We are quickly going downhill and have no moral base unless we start demanding excellence of our children. Otherwise we are doomed to our own malevolence.

I'm not saying that he shouldn't be penalized, I'm just saying that I don't see Boeheim doing it. And unfortunately we all know that the rules oftentimes don't apply to the star athletes. They learn that from a very young age.

Tim Tebow, Amen! You don't have to be coddled and cowtowed to in order to develop a star athlete. As a matter of fact, Tim's parents showed the world that you can make any child a star if you give him the right tools, those tools being the tools of life and working hard and not he tools of expediency. So many kids would do so much more and go so much further if only society would make this incumbent on them. Tim took marginal talent to the top by hard work and humility. Anyone can if they follow the same path. We are a lazy and complacent society led by lazy and complacent leaders. We can do a whole lot more if we only put forth the effort.

All,

When I started this thread I was mad at the lack of sportsmanship. We have a young talented team that played hard and never gave up. With 20 seconds left they conceded, but Southerland made a move on national TV that cleared the benches.  Everyone knows there was absolutely no point to the action. Lets move on. Much more important things for the team and everyone here to focus on. Definitely proud at how St John's represents the city with their heart, effort, and class.

This whole sportsmanship thing with not running up scores in major sports is such nonsense. WHO was offended by it?? I can tell you that our team wasn't, so you shouldn't be either. This is major college basketball, not CYO ball. NOBODY ON THAT SIDELINE CARES THAT HE DUNKED THAT BALL. Nobody there is offended by it. None of our kids lost an ounce of sleep over that. Nobody is crying in their room. It's really such a non-issue. I don't understand how it was "embarrassing" to anybody. Dunking a basketball with time remaining on the clock has NOTHING to do with learning how to be a decent human being. Nobody was offended by that. People are so soft. Jeeze.

Very unlikely that would ever happen at any college. move on......

I guess you don't have kids.

Yes I do,

do you live in a cave? college athletes (football & basketball) can do whatever at most colleges (very high percentage) this will not change.

Tebow! Hello!!!!! It's all about teaching kids to do the right and classy thing. I have one son and two stepdaughters and these kids are the most grounded classy kids I've seen and I'm not taking the credit. I give the credit to my wives (one deceased before you go off on that tangent). This spills over into real life. I've never seen such a bunch of people who just don't get it, but I'm old enough to be your father so when your my age you might just say "Oh, that's what he was talking about!"

No offense, but apparently you don't get it. You want to suspend a kid for going for the ball, when there was still time on the clock.

Are you suggesting that the move was any less bone-headed because there was time left on the clock? While suspension is a bit severe IMO, Greg is spot on about a lack of class(and resulting consequences) permeating both amatuer and professional sports.

Did not see the play but I hardly think you can call a kid classless for playing the game until the horn sounds. Sorry, but I don't want my players deciding when to play or not to play hard. I also don't want to sound like Knute Rockne but playing to the buzzer is an attitude and mindset not a decision.

I didn't see the play either, but from what I heard it was rather unsportsmanlike.

I hear you and maybe it was, like I said I didn't see it. However, in general I am a play it to the buzzer guy regardless of score. Also, when I was in high school I played in an All-Star game against a player from a few towns over that I had matched up against in playgrounds forever. In those days it was playgrounds and high school so we had never played against each other in an organized game; however we had a heavy mutual respect. Anyway during the game he seriously hacked me in jest and took the ball with no call; I ran him down and bear hugged him with the same attitude, in jest. We shared a smile on the court and laughed about it the next time we saw each other. After the game though several "fans" from his school approached me and started giving me teeth and while it didn't go further than that it could have. Obviously, none of them knew we knew each other and that the whole incident had been a personal inside joke, if you will. My point is that sometimes we don't know what is really going on and overreact to what we think is happening.

I think if you are up by 25 in the last remaining seconds of the game, you should play as hard at the team that's down 25. If they are running their offense and trying to dunk on your head, you play defense as you would in the first minute of the game. If they are holding the ball and just looking to slink out to the bus, let them slink out. Swiping at the ball in that instance is unsportsmanlike.

I'll finish up by saying that if he went to St. John's instead of Syracuse, he wouldn't have accomplished so little in his college career and therefore wouldn't need to try to get a cheap steal so he could dunk in front of family and friends who no longer feel the need to travel upstate to see him.

Now that's classy!!
