Christian Jones

those guys HAVE taken heat on here albeit after they were long graduated so yeah I see what you are saying about treating the active players unfairly.

One of those guys mentioned was a member with strong opinions until another member outed him - that is to say his handle, not his sexual orientation...

Did he have to be outed or did he go by his own name?

Wow I remember that Paul.
He was really pushing Kresse if memory serves me.

Well done-better memory than me.

It is a good thing these forums didn't exist in 85 becuase poor Steve Shurina, Terry Bross and Rob Cornegy would have gotten the Christian Jones treatment back then. For younger crowd those were the 10-12 guys on Final Four team

There were no expectations that any of those guys were players. Shurina was more of the Looie gift to a Catholic HS coach for an end of bench player - an Eddie Kennedy if you will. CJ looked like he had the body and ability to be a real presence getting major minutes at some point, and it just hasn't happened.

If only Looie had kept the unproductive Shurina at the end of the bench, where you rightly suggest he belonged. Instead, he ended up taking away valuable PT from the highly recruited duo of Elander Lewis and Marcus Broadnax, which contributed to their exodus -- and which was probably the only important contribution he ever made, albeit a negative one. (I'm sure he was a nice kid, but I'd pull out my hair whenever he checked into a game.)

As for Bross, Beast, wasn't he heralded as a big-time rebounder when he signed with us?

When Shurina, Lewis and Broadnax were on the same team 86-7, Shurina and Broadnax played in 14 games each, Lewis 21. Shurina shot a scintillating 11-33, which put him above Lewis' 11-38 and Broadnax's 8-30. None of them deserved more time than they got.

The real reason both Lewis and Broadnax left was because Looie recruited over them the next year with Boo and Michael Porter.

Bross actually averaged more rebounds than points senior year in HS. 14 pts 20 rebs

Not disparaging him, but if CJ gets significant minutes it will mean either (I) big trouble, or (ii) he was SIGNIFICANTLY coached up by this staff. In the past, he has really shown no ability to be a BE player, despite opportunities. But he has a great BB body which makes him tantalizing as a potential player. We've had many of those in the past 15 years, including Alpha Bangura and others who absolutely looked the part.

To be fair, CJ is enigmatic. He shows flashes - an occasional thunderous dunk, a soft jumper, appears to have the basketball ability to have a place in the rotation. But when given the chance to prove himself, plays as flat as a day old glass of Pepsi. Most of the time on the court, he just doesn't accomplish very much, which is frustrating when you see a guy with a pro body and a reasonably good skillset do very little.

It was even more frustrating last year when the only other big man backup was Amar and we really needed his service. As a 10th man his play would have been more tolerable. Of course this year is an opportunity to redeem himself. We are thin up front. Maybe he ll get good coaching and work hard.

Of the three returnees, I see Balamou as having the most upside and the team may have to play small at times to get him and Ellison adequate playing times. I think his defense was excellent last season and if given the right role he can help keep games close for short substitutions. Jones would have to be taught how to play basketball which I feel he lacks instinct for. Amar should get better but I think he needs time in Mullin's system. Hopefully he will improve as the season goes along.

I actually think Amar will be much improved and have a solid role in the rotation. We'll see.

I love Redmen.com because there are knowledgeable people with disparate opinions on players. Balamou has incredible athletic ability - speed, leaping, good strength for his size, and a tireless worker on the court. The only thing he isn't, though, is a basketball player. He can impact games in short bursts at times, but has no real feel for the game, no offensive game to speak of. As a 5-6 minute sub who spells someone in foul trouble, he can be effective, and maybe even demonstrate his remarkable athletic ability with a block, a dunk, a thunderous offensive rebound and putback. Beyond those 5-6 minutes he will become a liability on the court.

I agree but I truly believe all three will show good improvement. I look forward to seeing their development.

I thought Jones was decent and gave us a "big" body vs SD St in the first half, then for some reason never saw the court in the 2nd half.
