Christian Jones

You can't play 12 or 13 guys. Preferably 8 or 9 guys should play. Sometimes people go crazy over the 12 and 13 guys. Jones is hated becuase Lavin hyped him up and started him for no reason. If Jones never played like he should have and was just a practice body, he would never get mentioned. If we are really worrying about Jones status this is going to be one long year.

Jones is disliked (not hated) because as sports fans, we idolize athletes that play the best, and overlook their character deficiencies. Those who cannot play, we crap on. Jones doesn't suck - we do.

Hate isn't the word. We were so thin last year, when he came in, his performance was mediocre at best. That is the reason for the dislike. He is not a BE player. We could use him this year for depth, Maybe I am wrong and he will improve w Mullin.

Is a "BE" player as good as a "BE" player was three years ago?

No. But he still isn't a big east player in this current conference layout.

I don't know but Jones wasn't a "BE" player then and he isn't one now

Christian Jones is a big east level basketball player.

He is a big east level athlete. He has yet to prove that he is a big east level basketball player. Although I still think he can be.

Unfortunately our former coach did this kid a huge disservice by talking him up so highly. He raised our expectations exponentially where there were none to begin with. I personally believe that his problems are all mental and perhaps the new staff can devote the time and effort required to allow CJ to be a solid role player. Lord knows he certainly has the physical attributes required to play and succeed at this level.
Hoping CJ proves all the doubters wrong.

A coworker of mine played football at FSU. He told me Bowden used to always tell him heart beats talent everytime. I wish Jones embraced that. He might not have the highest skill level but he could throw that body around on the boards and play tough defense. Maybe our new no nonsense staff will get that out of him.

CJ is in good hands coaching wise and is getting another chance. He has shown flashes of ability. We all hope he takes advantage of this new opportunity! It could be a win-win!

It is a good thing these forums didn't exist in 85 becuase poor Steve Shurina, Terry Bross and Rob Cornegy would have gotten the Christian Jones treatment back then. For younger crowd those were the 10-12 guys on Final Four team

There were no expectations that any of those guys were players. Shurina was more of the Looie gift to a Catholic HS coach for an end of bench player - an Eddie Kennedy if you will. CJ looked like he had the body and ability to be a real presence getting major minutes at some point, and it just hasn't happened.

Anyone expecting Jones to do any rebounding only has to look at his official bio. The answer is right there:

At IMG Academy
Played one postgraduate season for IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. ... averaged 12.0 points and 5.0 rebounds ...

At James Bowie
A four-year standout at James Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas ... earned team MVP honors as a senior in 2010-11 ... averaged 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest that season ...

Shurina was the best warmup shooter in school history
Jones was not a big recruit. Product of Lavin hype nonsense

The hype was one thing, but he actually played pretty well and showed promise in the first 5 or so games of his career. Coincidentally these were the games where he either started or was squarely in the rotation. Lavin soon there after moved him to the bench where he sat and sat until his real nice 10 minute stretch against Marquette later in the BE season as a freshmen. Then the redshirt, and the injury, and the lack or role/playing time all kind of set him back in my opinion. He still has two years left to leave a positive memory here.

Seems to have a real low motor and does not seem to have any basketball instincts. Again IMO 10th man material but if you want to analyze him, that is mine.

Steve Shurina wasn't bad. Kevin Fitzpatrick on the other hand

If only Looie had kept the unproductive Shurina at the end of the bench, where you rightly suggest he belonged. Instead, he ended up taking away valuable PT from the highly recruited duo of Elander Lewis and Marcus Broadnax, which contributed to their exodus -- and which was probably the only important contribution he ever made, albeit a negative one. (I'm sure he was a nice kid, but I'd pull out my hair whenever he checked into a game.)

As for Bross, Beast, wasn't he heralded as a big-time rebounder when he signed with us?
