Christian Jones

Very limited opportunities, but from what I saw he is too slow to play at this level. What is his strength as a player?

One of the slowest 6'7 forwards to get off his feet ever to play at SJU. Kid needs intensive one to one tutor. Is David Russell available as a consultant?

He's certainly no slower than Ty Grant, who would shuffle up and down the court. Now he's no Ty Grant, but at the same height as Ty, with some heart and determination, and with some direction and a given roll, he should be able to make himself in to a serviceable player for a depleted team.

The only thing he has in common with Ty Grant as a basketball player, is they are both listed at the same height.

Billy Singleton wasn't exactly a roadrunner and he was a big contributor. Basketball rewards many talents.

Amen.

Billy, Lamont Middleton & Tyrone Grant were all "heady" interior players not blessed with much size or speed. I suspect Christian lacks their passion & smart play. Some kids have those intangibles, some don't.

Completely agree Paultz, but my point was that its not lack of foot speed or getting off his feet that's preventing CJ from providing some production. Its more about heart, determination and a defined roll. In light of our lack of depth and size on the front line, and with CO's propensity for foul trouble, even 5-10 minutes a game would be huge. I figured I get lambasted by the usual suspects(not you) for even daring to compare CJ to Ty in any manner. But then again some on here ether don't take the time to read posts all the way through, or are to dumb to comprehend them. Anyhow IMO there is potential there for serviceable minutes.

#1.How would you compare him to Lamont Middleton? ( great Middleton-David Cain year wow!) I guess Lamont was smaller & quicker....
Maybe he (Jones) needs a tutor but also some PT each game?
2. Having not seen the game could you comment on the European kid & his potential?
Thanks!

all the best

Frankly I would give Amar more playing time than Joey, And CJ. This kid gave us some valuable minutes last night! I like his energy, his ability to rebound, and his length which we need desperately! Providence out rebounded us by 14 last nite! Great win last night which I would have bet my bottom dollar we would have lost! Both Jordan and CO should remain next year. CO plays like a bonehead at times not considering that if he fouls out we are are done, whereas Jordon to me still play like a freshmen!

Agree Monte. I probably just felt good listing those guys. :) I agree that people going "partial postal" is rampant.

What made Singleton such a special player - and yes I am using that word - is he was a gifted athlete in HS. A few knee surgeries later, and he had to overhaul his game. He went from a kid who could beat you off the dribble and out jump you for a rebound, to a player who beat you with his high IQ, and was more often than not, in the right spot for rebounds.

He is one of the greatest glue guys and leaders ever wear a SJU uniform. He took immense pride in representing the University.

He also is one of my all-time favorites to ever wear a SJU uniform.

I know I am helping to steer this thread into a different direction, but when Singleton's name is mentioned, I can't pass up a chance to respond.

I agree about Singleton, Kranmars. Great HS talent who had to become a smart college player. Unfortunate that the knee injuries derailed his career. He should be a head coach one day.

as far as a tutor goes, I loved how Charles Minland played. he was undersized but the heart of a lion!!

How did CO improve his game offensively from last year? On his own or with help from other coaches outside our competent staff? Is there a big man coach on the staff that could help Jones?
What's Mike Dunlap up to these days? Could really use his abilities,

Isn't Zendon Hamilton working with him?

Doubtful, he passes the ball occasionally.

I brought up Singleton, and since he is hardly ever mentioned here, I'll respond to you. Thanks for detailing the pre-knee problems Billy. He was a total class act as well as being a solid player, knee problems and all. I know he succeeded Billy Goodwin, not sure if it was a direct succession, but Goodwin is an all-time favorite of mine. Singleton, much more limited at the point he came to SJU, was a similar fit. rebounded hard for a small forward, could hit the short jumper, and was a complimentary player. A Glue-guy or mortar guy is a perfect description.

Man, I sure think that CJ could develop into a solid SJU contributor if he had the passion of either of these 2 guys.

I agree with the "passion" but then again I'm not there at practice to get a feel for his passion & heart. But I'm hopeful.
Ivan Pavlov said, later in life, the keys to life were passion & gradualism. If Jones gets the passion & can gradually improve his game between now and Autumn of 2015, wow we could have a solid can complimentary player.
Thanks again.

You are so intellectual in your posts. I love reading them.

Thank you Beast:
1.I appreciate your compliment but please put me in for a formal " thank you" as I'm way behind you in that significant category
2.as with all folk at times I have my doubts and think it best not to post but rather submit to those much more knowledgeable than I in regard to SJU Bball!

Thanks again!
All the best ...

Singleton was always in the Gym practicing. I shot the ball around with him numerous times because he was there just about every time I was. Singleton was an amazing rebounder considering that he could literally jump only a few inches. He was relatively strong but it was smart positioning and using his body (butt) better than just about anyone.
