Christian Jones

He is redshirting this year
He wears a red warmup suit to each game and sits with/directly behind the team
He showed flashes of potential last year as a freshman but was a bit passive
In a perfect world, he should have redshirted last year but roster numbers dictated otherwise
If he can bulk up a bit and learn to be more assertive, I think he can be a good rotation player for us in the future

Bulk up?
He's actually slimmed out a bit this year. He was built like a MAC truck but if anything now he lost a bit.
Really looking forward to him next year.

Uhhh bulk up? Are we talking about the same Christian Jones here?

I'm a big fan of the redshirt. I think the timing for Christian's redshirt was ideal, as it gave him the opportunity to see where he needed to improve.

It should pay dividends for this program the next three years even if he never plays more than 15-20 mpg.

Early last season, I thought this kid was the second coming of Larry Johnson with an explosiveness to the basket that was unreal for his body size. Then he fell apart in almost every aspect of the game. Hopefully he becomes a little more seasoned with the RS. His little jump hook was pretty.

There's been a lot of chatter about lack of recruits for next year, and rightyfully so. Me personally I'm ecstatic to watch Christian Jones play. The few minutes he's gotten in his short career has shown me that he IS big east player. More polished offensively than Gift and obviously Obekpa. Hopefully he can be a poor man's anthony glover for us or even as good.

Anyone else share my sentiments, or am i overrating him a bit?

He has to step up his game to be as effective as Gift. Bigger question is who replaces Sanchez. He has not had a great season, but he gives us a lot.

Unproven rebounder. Must improve dramatically in that area.

A poor mans Anthony Glover ?
Anthony was a top 30 player coming out of high school Christian Jones is supposed to be a diamond in the rough. Glover had the heart of a lion and went after every rebound. Jones was a terrible rebounder for his size last season.
Can there be a complete transformation in his game I certainly hope so but to date there was nothing in his game to evidence any resemblance to Anthony Glover.

NBA body. Shows flashes of ability, but way too often was eating minutes without contributing a darned thing on the court. I like his potential, but am not confident he will transform potential into a solid contribution.

I loved AG's heart, and he may have even been top 20 coming out of Rice, but the fact is that he was an extremely undersized PF at the Big East level. As such, he was nothing more than decent college player who was over-matched many nights by much larger opponents. Having said that, Jones has a long way to go before he even becomes a decent college player.

I admire your optimism but there is nothing to indicate that Mr. Jones will be anything more than a non starter on an top Big East team.

Lets look at the numbers. Last season Jones played in 24 games but scored in just 7 of those games. He made just 5 of 14 free throws, averaged just 1.2 rebounds per game, and averaged just 2.5 points per game. In addition it appears that Mr. Jones may already be one year older than his class since he played 4 years at James Bowie High School before spending a 5th season at IMG Academy before enrolling at StJohn's so it appears that he will be 2 years older than his new class eligibility at StJohns.
Is it possible that Jones emerges as a big time star? anything is possible but the facts don't make it appear likely.

Christian Jones is not the second coming of Anthony Glover. If he was, he wouldn't have been redshirted this season.

As I've said in previous posts, I really hope Lavin has an ace up his sleeve. A frontcourt of JaKarr Sampson, Chris Obekpa, and Jones would be destroyed next season. The team needs to find replacements for Orlando Sanchez and God's Gift.

If anything, he's proven that he can't rebound. He hasn't rebounded (#'s wise) at any level: HS, prep, or college.
To the poster calling him a poor-man's Glover, it just is not fair to one of the biggest warriors we've had here. Glover was born with the instincts and desire to go after every ball. Jones doesn't have those intangibles, but that doesn't mean he can't improve his rebounding. A lot of that can be improved with practice and with a new mindset. He does have a high degree of skill...nice shot, decent looking passer, under control, etc. He also muscles up in the post fairly well.

Ive been high on him sense day one. Doesnt get out of control, looks to post, is a solid passer and screener. Absolutely needs to become a better rebounder.

I think he has some refined skills but needs to play a bit angry...he has the body and hops for it

those averages don't mean anything...most of the games he appeared in he played 3-8 minutes. I remember the one game he got decent minutes against marquette he posted 10 and 6 playing 20 minutes and looked promising. It's one game, I know, but i always felt he deserved more minutes. He seemed polished when he was given a chance on the offensive end.

A "poor mans" anthony glover as a ceiling meaning similiar body type, style, but not as good....i thought everyone knew what "poor man's" meant.

Eerily similar to Branch...always said that Chris should have just been given a defined role (e.g rebound) and let him go...if he didn't take advantage, the he sits...but he always seemed to be a bit lost
