Misinformed. Water under the bridge but negotiations with MA were pretty far along when Repole went off.
That's not what MA said in his introductory press conference. . .

You don't hire a guy simply because he tried to hold the fort down. I'm sure Anderson got a sense of the job he did for the team last year from Cragg and other AD staf, and from the players themselves. It's sort of an agnostic position apart from actually coaching the team, so retaining Chris keeps some sort of continuity with the players with a guy they obviously like.
No kidding. Didn’t think I needed to state the obvious. Plus I’ve seen the work Chris put in while ingrates we’re jumping ship. Just giving the coach a thumbs up for acknowledging that work.

Also a tip of the cap to AD Cragg for dissuading the dynamic duo - Bobby & his puppet master Oliva - from going with the coach from Yale. Which would have been an absolute disaster. A tip of the cap to Mike Repole as well. If not for his well deserved torching of the third floor in Newman. God only knows who would be coaching this team.

Just glad coach Anderson is here and I’m sure Chris is just as happy. ; )
Misinformed. Water under the bridge but negotiations with MA were pretty far along when Repole went off. Shows how much of an outsider he is. AD was pretty annoyed at the myth that MR's rant influenced anything. He is now clearly on the outs and never learned that to have significant input, you pony up cash first, respect others who have done the same, and work collegially.
Sorry but the only one misinformed here is you my friend. Repole torched them and the next day they interviewed the Yale coach(Jackson?), Hewitt and coach Anderson. Like I said the dream team wanted the Yale guy and Cragg informed them there was no way to sell him to the fans/alumni/media over Anderson. And that without a doubt he was the guy to go with especially after being roasted the previous day on national radio by your biggest booster. That is basically how it went down.

As you guys pray to the altar of Repole he is far from the biggest booster. Basically dangled the potential of a big donation in return for decision making power.

If you remember Repole got press for himself by publicly offering to buy a piece of the Mets for $200 million. Then he realized as a minority shareholder he would have little to no input on operations. Let's see if Repole delivers on his now public offer of $10 million to renovate CA. Guarantee you he was dangling a carrot to Cragg with a big string attached- influencing decisions. Many of our posters don't have season tix so don't care, but I'd be pretty certain Repole won't be donating.

This thread has ZERO to do with Repole, and his rant is old news. For those who actually support the school, he is no hero.

Repole has done more to support the program than probably anyone.

Obviously you don’t like Repole. But if you don’t think him DESTROYING laurel and hardy on national radio had nothing to do with Anderson being hired two days later you are kidding yourself. And what I said happened in the previous thread is right on point whether you like it or not. Plus, if the they did hire Yale man I can almost guarantee that Craag would have resigned already & our program would still be in shambles. Instead we got Iron Mike at the helm who in turn kept Huey on staff because without him he would have had about four players on his roster. Win, win for the program in my book. And you can thank Repole and especially Craag for sticking to his guns. Those are just the facts folks.

I have no way of knowing, and I think most posters fall in this category, but I am curious as to exactly what Mike Repole has done good or bad for the Program?
I get his speaking out about the coaching search which I think helped get us Coach MA. I am hopeful this works out long term. We will see. That was great.
I assume he is a heavy donor. So what else has he done or does he have influence over? After his speaking out is he now “done” with the University?
Again, I don't have an idea either way but outside of the coaching search just trying to understand why people have such strong feelings.

He's not the biggest donor from what I heard some a very good source but I dont think his relationship with Cragg is fractured at all and my complete guess is any involvement he does will kind of be with Cragg for now. But I heard and genuinely likes Cragg and he said this in that WFAN interview also so thats not really new news

If you were donating $10 million dollars wouldn’t you want some influence on what it’s being used for?
The way it works with charitable donations, is that you donate money, and are often put in positions that help influence direction. You get appointed to committees, boards, etc, eventually become a BOT member. You don't say, "If I donate $10 million I get to the choose the coach", or even expect that would be handed to you. Repole's donations compared to others, while generous by almost any standard, are very limited for a billionaire. I am unaware of his participation in any board positions where policy is shaped and decisions are made.

Bottom line IMO is this. If you primarily or only care about the basketball program, you probably loved his rant. You probably are more likely to believe that his outburst was justified and he used his influence to voice what many fans have felt about the program and decision making regarding coaches.

If you are an alumni who loves the school, support it in any way, and kind of think of this sort of thing as a family argument that should stay between family members, then you are more likely to think his rant is regrettable to highly annoying.

Anderson's on site was already scheduled, and serious discussions already had been initiated is what I've been told.

Could it have influenced people who controlled how much we spent on a coach to go all in at the high end? I don't think anyone here knows.

Do you know Chris? First off, not to diminish him in any way, because he is a great guy, but the person parents turned to was GSJ because he was the #2 coach (depending on how you look at it), and they wanted their concerns about the future of the program answered. In no way would they have turned to Chris for that. He's a good guy, and the players like him. He just completed his first season as DOBO, after two years as a graduate assistant.

As the director of basketball operations, Huey provides the day-to-day administrative support for the program and assists in organizing on-campus recruiting activities. His responsibilities also include assisting with video operations and scouting reports, coordinating travel, managing gameday operations, maintaining the team’s calendar, and serving as the program liaison for athletic administrative areas along with community service.

He has nothing to do with coaching the team, and to think kids would have transferred without him here is preposterous.

Anderson's on site was already scheduled, and serious discussions already had been initiated is what I've been told.

Could it have influenced people who controlled how much we spent on a coach to go all in at the high end? I don't think anyone here knows.
So is CMA a liar?
1. He was quoted during the press conference saying he was called on Wednesday just 2 days before the presser (Good Friday).
2. He repeatedly said it was a whirlwind 2-3 days.
3. Repole went on the air on Wednesday at 4pm. And I know for a fact that SJU knew about his plans to go on the radio at 12pm that day.

Not adding up here.

History is forever revised by those doing the writing. However it happened and what influenced what, is IMO. totally irrelevant; the only thing that matters is that we got an experienced, professional coach with values appropriate for a Jesuit school. I think it is safe to say the powers that be wanted to select "their" candidate as they had in the past and that didn't happen. In the same vein, it appeared before the selection of the head coach was even made, two assistants had been "picked", at least one of whom was not a good fit. He has been, thankfully again IMO, by-passed. Why and how did these events unfold? Frankly, I don't care; we came out with the best coach among those realistically available and that is all I care about.

Not adding up here.
I heard from a pretty good source that some people in the school were freaking out that afternoon before the interview about what Repole might say. Also I’m pretty sure it was the poster here billthetruth who obviously has some sort of connection to Repole because he absolutely nailed it hour or 2 before the interview on that repole interview thread when he said something to the effect that Bobby G and Oliva were going to get roasted but Cragg was safe.

For the love of God people, lay off the QUOTE function and Beast quit while your behind, your timeline is faulty.

Truths:

1) Hurley was offered considerably more than he was making at Arizona, so SJU had put together an offer in the vicinity of what MA was paid.
2) Porter Moser was reported offered over $2 million to jump ship
3) MA was making a reported $2.55 million at Arkansas when he was fired.

If Repole wanted Hurley so bad, he could have told the school he would pay $1 million per year of Hurley's salary (at least) so that SJU could have blown the doors off with a $3 - 3.5 mm offer. HE had lots to say but shut up on that front because he didn't do it.

I don't believe the school would turn down a big donation from any alumni, so Repole after everyone calms down could pony up more money to get into the fold. I don't see it happening right away. Cragg knows crazy alumni after being at Duke for 33 years, and their endowment, besides the Duke Energy money, is through the roof. It's not good business to not accept money from donors. The guy that was going to fund Tafner slowly worked his way back into the fold, but honestly that guy continued to do charitable things for St John's and elsewhere even after his donation was pulled.

Repole's biggest gripe wasn't who they hired, but that he wasn't allowed to choose. To underscore how little he has donated recently, he himself said he donated $100K to renovate the men's and women's locker rooms, which if you've done home renovations lately would get you a really nice kitchen, not two world class locker rooms.

If Repole comes through with $10 million in the next year, I will apologize to his face.

Hey Beast, we don't know CMA's salary. RIght?
I realize CMA had just been fired and he wasn't in a solid 'negotiating position', but neither were we. Lol.
IF CMA's current comp level is say 2.65mm, $100K > than his Arkansas pay, the net impact from NY's higher tax rate would be totally neutralized compared to his Arkansas comp, before Fed Taxes of course...~2.4 vs ~2.4.
But again, who knows...

True, but the 'point' is still valid.

As a St. John's alum, I consider fellow alum(like Repole) much more a part of the St. John's family than Bobby or Oliva. Administrators come and go. They are not "family" to me. As for donations, maybe if some of those so-called really high rollers cared more about our beloved basketball program and were willing to get more involved, then maybe we wouldn't' have had to endure 20 years of mostly garbage around here. But they don't give a flying F. At least we all know Repole does. I don't blame him one single bit for attaching strings to his 10 Mil donation. I'd do the same if I felt that it wasn't going to be put to good use. And "if that's not how it works" at St. John's, I assure you there are plenty of institutions that would accept a 10 Mil donation with some strings attached.
