Champ

I think it's 100% mental.  Plenty of good looks, layups, 3's...and we're running plays designed to get him the ball in his favorite spots on the court.  It's a lot of pressure - NBA, $, Justin C already playing pro ball.  He also has a lot of room for improvement which should be a huge upside for an NBA team.

this is exactly what the doctor ordered.... last game at the friendly confines of CA.... Julian dropped an all-time line... 34 and 16! 12-22 / 4-7 from 3.... and missing 4 FTs going 6-10.

Absolutely stud performance.

The crowd will be behind him - back home where he knows the air density for optimal release speed.... this is it.

SJU going away- Julian with 30+
Crazy as it sounds, I get the "air density" factor. What with me being a shooter and all.
I assume you mean shooter, as is a filled shot glass.

I would lean toward #3, the mental aspect. As others have noted, the drop off in FT shooting supports this theory. While defenses are keying on him, he has consistently made the same shots in the past - contested or otherwise.

I think this issue is compounded by the pressure for the team to have a big year. I have noticed that early on in games when he hasn’t had many touches, he has had a tendency to force some rushed shots resulting in some bad misses and the snowball mental effect.

As Amase mentioned, these are things that shooters go through. It’s a process that he will work through. Hopefully, before it’s too late. The good news is that it only takes a good half or so of seeing the ball go through the net to change a mindset.

Fear does not exist in this DoJo…now, Go get ‘em Champ!

IMO Champ lacks foot speed to drive past defenders. They have gotten in his jock on the jump shot and thus it ihas become increasingly difficult for him to to make a contested outside shot. When he does  occasionally, get by his defender the weak- side help collapses very aggressively as they are not worried about him passing to a spot up 3 point shooter as we do not have any!!!!

Scouting has figured this out. As long as team has a strong defensive philosophy it will remain difficult for Champ to put up significant numbers as well as not having another 3 point threat.

I want him to succeed just my view.

Solid analysis-  would try and overlap his minutes with either Coburn/Smith as much as possible as those two are seemingly our best spot up shooters...

One thing is certain  is that Champ is not a first or second round pick at this time.  He is better off coming back for another year or else he is playing over seas.

ice cold again.  although wheeler has been stepping up.  can't win without champ

All the talk of Champ coming back is nonsense.  There are no circumstances under which he returns to SJU next year.  Let’s just hope he gives us a few decent games.  He really looks bad.

Seems we could win with him. The good news is as we have said for many yrs ,there is always next yr

I feel sorry for him. He is a great kid. Something doesn’t seem right.

I've said this before (though it was actually my father who brought this point up to me, to be fair):

They may just be too similar offensively to ever play great together.  Both have very similar style games, and they really haven't had a game where both were great (maybe UCONN).

Wheeler was one of the first transfers to sign on, and I wonder if Anderson thought Julian was going pro when he made that recruiting pitch (I'm sure he didn't say it to Wheeler out loud, but it was probably in the back of his mind).

There's no villain here.  It's nobody's fault.  Just sometimes, players' games are not compatible.

Seems to me champ had a really good season last year. However coaches and players studied him and learned how defend against him. He needs to adjust but doesn’t seem to be able to. He will never play in the nba. His twin he waaaay better than him can barley see the floor what makes anyone think champ can is beyond me. Nice kid and all but it’s the truth.

To me it looks like he's lost all confidence in his jump shot and he doesn't have that shooters shoot mentality when he's cold. For better or worse there have been several times over the past few games where he has passed up shots that he was taking without a second thought earlier this season. He has a quick release so he doesn't need much time and space to get a shot up but he hasn't even looking at the rim in those spots lately

Tonight was the worst I have seen Julian.  Not talking about his performance, but the body language.  I agree with Andrew, I feel for him.

If it's nothing physical, I say he needs to shoot his way out of this.  Right now he looks gun shy.  Great kid....definitely rooting for him.
