Beast, you need to read the site rules and cool it.

Lawmanfan. Could you please PM me. I am not trying to push the envelope in terms of site rules in any way, and my posts are intended to be public commentary on a scandal that is rocking the university. My position is that as members of the St. John's community with a vested interest in the well being of the school, unless we have a forum to discuss these allegations. Our Church went through a very large scandal where our laity, although outraged, was totally shut down in its attempt be part of the dialogue (remember "Voice of the Faithful"). So, not being argumentative whatsoever, I do want to insure that strong voices aren't being shut down here. Please PM me. Thank you.

I agree and I will.

Above is the list of the SJU board of trustees ,many are Vincentian priests or other celergy members other wealthy donors.

I think the BOT needs to do the following at the very least fire Rob Wile asap have his name removed from SJU's site and demand he pays back the money, secondly FH needs to announce his retirement at the end of June and the University should elevate Fr. Maher as the next SJU President provided his hands are clean in the Chang mess.

Thanks for posting the current BOT list. Wile's position and relationship with FH afforded him lots of contact with the BOT and BOG. I hope that these realtionships do not adversely affect the board's ability to act appropriately in this matter, if they possess the authority to recommend terminations of employees incuding FH. The whole revelation of Wile borrowing money from board members is something I cannot wrap my arms around. The obvious questions are whether the board members making the loans had anything to gain by making them. McInerney is perhaps the university's largest donor. I believe one year in partcular he gave SJU a Christmas gift of $10 million. I cannot fathom how he would benefit from making Wile a $100K loan, but I would also say I am incredibly naive concerning influence peddling that can occur at very high places or in places that appear to be purely charitable. Certainly at prestigious schools, very large donors get the benefit of having their children receiving special consideration when applying to those schools. We know these things occur and accept them as how things are done. From everything I've heard, he is a really great guy, and he has ready done so much for St. John's that such a loan really would not improve that standing. Then again, I'm very naive in the way the world works at that level.

This isn't to impugn the reputation of any of the BOT in any way, but these dealings underscore the importance of not entering into arrangements where influence could be peddled. The "sale" of honorary degrees is another area that I really can't fathom. The fact that they are thank yous for directly contributing to the university really point to the dirty nature of university business. Is someone being honored for contributions to society in general or simply for dropping a huge donation to University coffers. It's a corruption of processes that most of us don't care about because we aren't closely impacted by the ramification.

“@PeterVecsey1: Big scandal about to rock St. John's. Nothing to do with sports, a valued source insists. Head will, er, has rolled.”

As a mother of a student at St. John's Law School and a member of the St. John's community, I feel that Father Harrington has done a noteworthy job as the President of the University. He has taken a small campus, modernized it and helped to create a magnificent state-of-the art University. Under his leadership, St. John's has become a national university excelling in every aspect of academic studies, especially pharmacy and law. He has elevated St. John's University to a respected and compassionate educational institution and deserves much credit for doing so. We should all concentrate on all his accomplishments!

Thanks for the post and your perspective as a parent. There certainly are a lot of great things done with the school since I went there.

I'd argue though that no one can turn a blind eye and everyone needs to be held accountable and our school needs to have a high moral standard not just with our students but it starts with management and the way we govern our school.

I've been holding off on this but I agree with beast of the east on a lot of what he has posted ( although I'm all for giving away of honorary degrees for big donations ) but I certainly understand his point of view on it and I absolutely could be wrong on my thoughts on that topic

@AzazNYK @Jamaicanhitman The two scandals are indeed related but minor league allegedly compared to what's to come

@apdrich9 Not at liberty or in position at this time to reveal more than what I've posted

According to Vescey, some story will break that is bigger and worse than the Chang thing and not sports related. Apparently somebody's head already rolled over it. Not looking forward to reading it whatever it is... Can't be good.

Thanks for your maiden post. St. John's pharmacy, as has been reported here under FH has soared to the 62nd position out of 81 schools, including many new schools. I guess we should focus on the great stuff he has done, like boasting that the school isn't predominately Catholic anymore. Please say hello to your children, Turks and Caicos

My guess is that FH will be allowed to resign imminently. I can only guess what the additional scandal will be, and hope that is nothing more than we've heard, which is reason enough for a change.

I hear that Harrington has notified school employees that the University has hired a lawyer for him and he is not at liberty to discuss the matter.

Our beloved University is being tarnished on a weekly basis.
Father Harrington, if he has one iota of compassion for the school and their alumni and student body, should step down immediately.
Horrible, shameful, scandilous.

Fr. Harrington has led some key improvements to the University over the last 20 years. The dorms and campus improvements, better fundraising, and marginal improvement in the student profile are positives. The Law School's reputation has improved. But he and the senior administration is woefully accepting of St. John's lackluster academic reputation, have an awful marketing and branding approach, do a poor job with alumni outreach, and they have overseen major increases in incoming class sizes instead of doing what they should to improve the reputation and standing of the University. The latest revelations of using the school's funds as a piggybank for clothes and trips, undisclosed no-interest loans from a Trustee, complete lack of controls and accountability, promoting an unqualified person to chief of staff, and who knows what next, to me, tarnishes Fr. Harrington's legacy beyond the positives.
