Cecilia Chang- NY Mag

The Prof that commented (PROFTERP) nailed it:

As a recipient of an MBA from St. John's, I am appalled by this 20+ year fraud. I am a college professor and one of the classes I teach is Business Fraud. It is difficult to fathom that she did this without tacit approval of Harrington and Wile. If they were, as they claim, unaware and duped by Chang, they should be removed by the Board of Trustees for no less than being incompetent

Wile is gone, right?

No
Your thinking Wegyzn (sp)

Was actually thinking Pellow, my bad. Don't see how Wile (and Fr. Harrington for that matter) keep their jobs after this. If I was an alumn, trustee, donor, etc., I'd be raising hell.

Waiting to see if STJ brings civil action against her estate. If they don't then I would be fairly sure they did. know.

This is a great read. I cannot believe that Harrington is still the Preident of SJU. He should be terminated immediately, along with Wile and the entire auditing dept. If the Board does not act on this promptly, each and every one of them should be removed! This entire tragedy reaks incompetence. Please forgive me if I misspelled reaks!

i am surprised too somewhat although the church would not do anything unless it involves abuse of minors unfortunately. didn't know cahil was a type of man who would got involved in this fiasco either.

What an amazing article although it is embarrassing to me as an alumni. I have to wonder if the stolen funds, in way of fraudulent expenses, have anything to do with the embarrassing renovation of Carnesecca Arena and the highly overpriced tution(although that is not different from most schools). I don't know how Father Harrington hasn't done the right thing and resigned. How does any donor not question where their money is really going to?

When the story broke I wrote on one of the boards that nothing would happen to him unless it was discovered that they were having an affair, and I still think that's the case.

The fact that Harrington and WIle are still associated with St.John's University says volumes about the St.John's Board of Trustees.

The fact Harrington haas not resigned over "Chang-gate" tells you about his character and sense of entitlement.

41% of the incoming St.J's frosh never graduate within a 6 year period (an incredibly high percent), while paying over $28k out of pocket (after average financial aid package) and after incurring tens of thousands of dollars of debt. The average indebtedness of a St.John's undergrad grad is approximately $30K. There is no report that identifies the crippling debt for the student that attends and does not graduate from St.John's.

If a Harrington or Wile apologist wants to discuss their fundraising results as being exemplary then I will be pleased to enter that discussion and I will reference facts (not opinion) based upon reports issued by the National Association of College and University Business Officers which shows Harrington's results to be along the lines of what should have been expected. If a Harrington or Wile apologist wants to discuss the academic advancement of St.John's during Harrington's tenure then I will be pleased to enter that discussion.

Harrington and Wile should be ashamed of themselves.

This article does not mention, but explains why Jim Pellow (COO) and Tom Nedelle (CFO) left so quickly but very quietly. Makes you think and wonder what else is going on that has been kept out of the public eye. Im surprised but glad this has not become a bigger story.

The only reason why Harrington is still there is because he still brings in alot of money (compared to cahill). Which makes you question the values of the university.

According to this article, Fr. Cahill had a girlfriend?? Oh boy. Perhaps if Fr.nHarrinton was not so preoccupied with accepting lavish gifts and going on trips to Turks and Cacos ( while living a vow of poverty????), the basketball program would be in a better place then it is right now. And by the way, if I am ever on campus and need to know the time, I will seek out Mr.W. as I hear that Rolex watches keep very accurate time.

Father Cahill had a girlfriend{of legal age} so what? much better than a alter boy in my book
the no sex vow has caused sexual deviance in the church preists should have a wife

That is a matter for the next pope to decide. Last I checked the Bible tells us to go and procreate, so I don't see why priests cannot marry and have families, it will not distract them from their work, if anything it will put them more in touch with the world around them and how to relate to people and their daily problems.

A disturbing story about the University and its' leadership. Or, lack thereof.

As a graduate of the College of Business Administration in the late 60's, I never warmed to Father Harrington in his Presidency. I thought he pursued questionable plans in adding dorms, took the University from being the largest Catholic University in the USA to a lower student level. DePaul becoming larger under Harrington.

He also seemed little interested in raising Academic Standing of the University, which it was poised to do under Father Cahill. Under Cahill, President Ronald Reagan visited the University and, at the time our Law School was ranked at the top for Bar Assoc passage rates.

I also believed FH understood little of the BB identity of the school and by doing so, contributed to the downslide that has occurred over his tenure. He made horrible decisions in meddling in Coaching selections and Jarvis and Roberts were very poor choices..Many, including Lavin believe the brand can be restored to its' former level of excellence but, we've had many years of mismanagement of the program. That jury is still out.

I do think FH has exceeded his time as President and, if the Pope can retire, so can he. It's time for new leadership and I hope the Vincentians are up to it.. We'll see..

Although Harrington has something to do with the mismanagement of the program and its down slide i place most of the blame on Monash whom most people can agree needs to be ousted as well.
