Caraher Leave of Absence

Verbalcommits.com says he's transferring to High Point.

Can someone explain to me why it was cool for Caraher to take a leave of absence mid season?  I don’t think that is sportsmanlike to ditch your teammates. What am I missing?

he graduated. Maybe no point to start his grad degree there planning to finish elsewhere. Especially if getting no burn.

Caraher was a heady but , a bit outclassed BE Player . I think we all had expectations he was going to be the dead eye 3 point shooter but , he never achieved that level . What does get applause is ,he's being a Good Student now headed to Law School .
I think David wasn't overwhelmed and actually did a nice job on the previous year's squad, earning minutes and playing with confidence.  He got squeezed out by the better talent that came in this year, but I thought he did pretty well.  Good luck to him.

Vince Cole was marginally better than DC.
And I think DC was better moving with and without the ball and scoring inside. And rebounding.

Also included earlier in this thread, coming back from NC, he woud have had to self-quarantine by himself for a longer period of time after the Christmas hiatus.  This Virus has been tough on alot of people in many different ways and we don't know what was going on behind the scenes.  By all evidence, he was a good guy and teammate, but sometimes you have to do what is best for you.

While I am sure I am missing others, he is not the first to leave us mid-year, Mikey Dixon did it recently.  Others include Marcus Broadnax, Curtis Redding and Bob Antonelli.

We also have had players who have left their previous teams and transferred here mid-year including Jamal Branch, Ian Steere and Matt Brust.

From Coach Anderson's comments at the time, I believe that it may have been a mutual decision. Caraher's minutes were drastically reduced with the addition of Cole and Wusu. The situation would not have improved with Pinzon coming in next year.

From the time he arrived on campus, Caraher had a positive attitude. During his redshirt season, he was a cheerleader for his teammates. When Coach Anderson took over, David worked very hard and lost over 20 pounds so that he would be able to play in an uptempo offense. He had some limitations to his game, but I vividly remember his being the reason we beat UMASS last season. He always gave maximum effort.

I would also like to point out that along with Greg Williams, David had the vision that resulted in the creation of the Red Storm Basketball Social Impact Scholarship that Alumnus James Shannon is funding.

I thank David for his contributions to St Johns basketball and wish him the best in basketball and life.

I think it's a fantastic legacy that he leaves with, in a tumultuous year of racial division, that two teammates and friends, one black and one white, endeavor to do be part of the solution by proposing a scholarship.   Powerful message that gives you a good idea of the quality of both Greg WIlliams and David Caraher and an example to all of us.

Any conversation about the social impact scholarship should include a huge thank you to the generosity of St. John’s Board of Trustees member James Shannon ’87 CBA and his wife Anissa Shannon ’89 SVC, ’91 Ed.    Like most other good ideas, without generous donors, they would go nowhere.
