This Just In: St. John’s redshirt junior David Caraher has taken a personal leave of absence from the men’s basketball program due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The 6-foot-6 wing elected to remain home in North Carolina with his family following the Christmas break.

I doubt he's coming back.  Just a guess but I think this was in the making already.

I thought he'd stick it out until the bitter end, but of all the candidates to transfer, he was probably in the top two. I don't think this is the last of the action, either.

Now we're free to compete against Kentucky for the big from W.Va.

Question: Would the free transfer thing allow him to show up on another team's active roster in the middle of this month?

good question.  Maybe so since it's after the semester.  Hope he doesn't need to do the same paperwork as Nywie...;-)

Well Caraher was definitely odd man out this season without much hope for p.t.

He busted it for us last season and definitely can play D1 ball.  Good luck to him.

There are lots of schools close to home where he can go back to being a double-digit scorer. I wish him well both on the court and off.

CMA seems to have lost confidence in Caraher and Roberts this season.

Kid had to self quarantine for a whole month prior to the season when he came back from. It was tough on him. Plus Ian Steere was his best friend.

He just couldn't go through that quarantine period again. It wasn't lack of playing time. This has been tougher on the kids more than you can imagine. Wish him the best.

As I recall also , Caraher and Figgy were friends when Mullin Recruitred them .  I recall that Caraher is a very good student and has some intetest in Law School . The COVID has impacted Players and their goals and  Schools significantly . David wasn't playing and apparently not likely to play much in the 2 Nd half of the Season . With the new Transfer Rules he can freely transfer to almost any School of his choosing .. It's not like he has no BB skills but , more like the BE being a level above his Skills . He will find a home somewhere . Good Luck to him .

I believe Dave has graduated. He'll make a great attorney one day if he pursues Law School as he has mentioned. Great young man & wish him well.

He looked pretty good last year, at the end of season. We were down to seven or eight healthy players, but those guys had really jelled. I also remember that pg transfer from Monmouth was playing great. Sure wish we had him this year.

Big Red - appreciate the info,, but not 100% clear...

are you saying he had Covid prior to season (1st quarantine), then got it again (a 2nd quarantine?), or just the potential layoff from the team false positive?

Good for him though if he got a degree in 3.5 years.

All that may be true, but I have to believe that after finishing the season strong, being in the rotation, and playing well with confidence, his expectation was that he was at least going to be a rotation player.  That opportuunity never came, and it has had to impact his overall decision and probably even played a role in his overall unhappiness of isolation from friends and family

Totally speculating here but what you wrote makes sense to me.

Caraher seems like a great kid and teammate who got more conifdent as the season went on last year and helped us in a handful of games with excellent ball movement. For whatever reason, he wasn't part of the rotation this year and can't blame him for staying home if he is done with classes. Wish him the best in law school and going forward from there. Once a Johnnie always a Johnnie.

I believe , if you go back in time far enough , to when Figgy and Caraher came here under Mullin , there was some connection between them . Prior to their being teammates .
