The other good one I love is the mystery of the 'season ticket holder gift'. No communication about it. You only hear thru the grapevine that there is a gift. And then you have to pick it up. DURING a game. I don't want to hold anything during a game. Nobody there after the game either. Is it such a difficult thing to ship the damn thing?

The plastic license plate holder? I'll give you mine. and as a season ticket holder this does bother me slightly but it will really tick me off if they're getting tickets below me.

I don't even know what it is. To be honest I've had tickets for a decade and I might have got 2 gifts. And they were so unrecognizable I don't even remember what they were. Some things it seems will never grow out of mom and pop stage. But those checks in September sure look nice from all the poor schlubs who send in their season ticket money.

* And I also want the Garden packed. And on the surface 1/2 price or BOGO deals might sound nice. But also opens up gate for a Hall fan to get a nice deal. Its a double edge sword.

I think I got a magnet for RW, or a STJ plastic pin for Loughlin society. I never knew there were gifts for season ticket holders that had to be picked up.

Moose as advice, you need to separate your love of Redmen basketball from the things the schools does to alienate us, or you'll be finished far too early.

Their loss not mine. No skin off my back. As I've gotten older I've cared less and less about sports seeing it from all angles. But if I ran a business the way STJ does I'd be on the corner with a coffee cup beggin for money.

I understnad your point of view. I watch very little NFL football and can hardly pay attention when attending an MLB game. I don't pay attention to NBA basketball . It's all because professional sports is all about money, the product is vastly overpriced, aand the players and organizations care very little about the fans.

At least with college, the players want to win, and they aren't getting paid for it. Of course, everyone else is making money.

Agree with both of you. Get much more enjoyment out of watching the Xavier-Regis(High School) tripleheader last night and my daughter's JV game the night before than I do watching the NBA. I take High School or college sports over pro sports any day of the week. Even if they did charge $5.00 for admission to the tripleheader :)

Do you have any ties to Regis or Xavier?

I attended Xavier and one of my daughter's closest friends from elementary school is co-captain of Regis freshman team. She would have attended Xavier if she was a he :). She's at Loyola. Sat on Regis side of gym(games at Xavier) with daughter's friend's family, but my heart was on opposite side of gym. Great rivalry not only because of Jesuit connection, but because many of the kids on both teams have play with or against each other while in elementary school, in Breezy/the Rockaways, etc. Added incentive for the kids.

Do you know how many millions of people live east of Jamaica? Ronkonkoma is only about 35 miles from Jamaica, but the round trip from there is about $20. So that's $8 more than your 12.50 figure. $10 student tickets do not let you bring your non-student friends to sit with you in great seats, so that value is lost. Would they let me sit say in the 200's with a student ticket even though it's for the student section? Since I would be essentially downgrading my seat is that ok? Either way you slice it though even with a student ticket for $10, there's a $20 round trip LIRR and about $5 metro card, etc. you are still talking about a $40 night as the absolute low end. The absolute low end for everything should be $20 at most IMO. What Marist used to do to get fan support was get new buses with our logo stretched across the whole thing...it looked awesome. They would bring fans to games as far away as Boston and other areas. This made it totally convenient to go see the team on the road. Why doesn't SJ get a few buses, have a cool paint job with "We Are...St. John's" with a red haze and lightning everywhere behind our logo? Then for $5 round trip or even better for free, you have a way to get directly to MSG with no train or subway and even away games at Nova, Seton Hall, Providence, etc. At a major sports school, that seems obvious to me. How can a MAAC school have these cool things, but a Big East school can't?

I'm not saying it is easily affordable for everyone, Joe. But there are many students who can afford to go but don't. Can't force them to be fans.

I think it would be great for the school to bus kids to MSG. I'm not sure it is cost effective in comparison to the cost of the subway or LIRR.

I can agree there are those who have the money but just don't want to. Trust me, if money was no option I'd get courtside seats to tons of SJ and Knicks games at MSG on a regular basis. As for the bus situation: my proposal would be to buy say 2 or 3 buses, put our "We Are...St. John's" tag on it with our logo, the red haze and lightning background, etc. and even list accolades on the back like " *2 Final Four appearances *28 NCAA Tournament berths *5 NIT Championships (or however many it is), etc. On the other side of the bus have it say "We are New York's team" and maybe have the skyline behind our logo. It really makes students feel like they are representing their school, and increases school pride. It's also a moving billboard as well as a round trip to MSG and other local schools. With tuition at what almost 40k if not more, there is no reason to charge the students for these trips. If there is a low ridership after a certain time period, simply do away with it and try something else. This is something that can certainly be done.

I've wondered about the bus issue as well. I've seen other schools buses (Marist & Rutgers come to mind) but never one for us. Then again, I'm still hoping for that Joe Lapchick statute.

Just to chime in my two cents here it goes. 1) When I was a grad student at SU I bought season tickets, which was like $180 (I could be off a little) and that included 9 BE home games + like 10 non-conf games. Obviously lots of students don't go versus the cupcakes but even if you go to like 10 games its not bad. The overall idea of paying $180 for access to any game also entices many students even if they know they won't go a lot. Something SU can offer was for like $200 you could get a football/bball combo. since no one goes to football games anyway andn lots of students did this because they felt for $200 they can go to any football/bball game. While posters have touched on Cuse being a different market economically, and their prices being lower, if you don't have a face value seat to Cuse-Gtown/Nova etc, it is pretty expensive on the secondary market since they both sell out right away and for $180 students are willing to not go through that hassle. I had friends dropping $100 for decent seats at certain games their. However, SJU does only charge $10 a ticket for students, this is $70 for all MSG BE games. $70 really is not a lot of money for a student, regardless of economic situations.

2) I am a grad student in NYC, not SJU, but it is $15 for me to go to MSG games. Granted I can walk to MSG from my apartment (albeit it is a long walk) so the $15 is not that bad. I usually don't buy food or drink because I literally get their before the game and go home right after. Now that deal gets 2 tickets, so I always bring friends with me who are not currently students and are not SJU fans. Someone like Joe and others can look into this option. It gives you the best available seats at the time of purchase, on game day, for $15. Usually I end up corner 100s, pay $30 for 2 tickets, and if more of us go, usually someone else is a student. So can keep multiplying by 2. Its also an easy way to get friends to go. My friends aren't SJU fans per se, but they love sports/cbb and to them it is worth $15 to see a BE game at MSG instead of overpaying for an NBA game.

You totally ignore the transportation cost which is the real killer. Add around $20 to even the cheapest ticket automatically. I don't know where you find 100 section tickets for $15...the cheapest 200's usually go for $30-35 from what I have seen, so please show me your ways. Other than getting student tickets, I don't see how it's possible to pay $15 with tax, processing fees and all for good 100 seats. It would be so much easier if I could just drive to the Queens campus (45 minutes with no traffic), park my car and hop on the bus taking me to and from MSG. Riding on a SJ bus would only add to the experience and like I said, it is a moving billboard as well. For a school with almost 20,000 students in all campuses and a top notch basketball program (in the national sense out of all conferences) that charges 40k a year per student, this seems easily done.

You definitely could get tickets under $20 in the 100's for past games because I've seen them on stub hub in my section.

While the bus certainly isnt a bad idea you're not exactly saving a windfall because your train from ronkonkoma to msg is less than $24 ( still should be cheaper for students ) but your going to spend around $16 on gas driving there.

The school should work out some sort of deal with the railroad for students with id

Joe, maybe you misread my post. If you got to the MSG box office on the day of the game and show a student ID, ANY student ID (my SU ID worked a few years back), you get two tickets for $15 in the best available. No fees or anything or tax. It is game day at MSG box office not online, you straight up pay $15 a ticket. Went with my brother to the Rutgers game and his non-SJU undergrad ID got us two tickets since I was running late. it is $10 at MSG box office with SJU ID/$15 with any. So you could use your SJU ID and get two tickets for $30. Now the fact the lower bowl doesn't sell out helps, since it is best available at the time of purchase, but I think it excludes courtside/club access seats. I usually end up in like 105 or another corner. Also to note, this is true for any college bball game at MSG, I have got $15 for Coaches v. Cancer/Preseason NIT, etc, the thing is you have to buy on game day so for events that sell more tickets you obviously don't get as good of seats.

Joe, not discounting your costs into the city, but one of your complaints, understandably was the price of the ticket for your friends. I just told you a way to get it from around $35 to $15, I don't have ways for you to get into the city for free or cheaper. I know how you feel I went to the Islanders game the other day cost me $14.50 roundtrip LIRR plus split parking with a friend so I paid $20 before I even had a ticket or anything. I also used to go to MSG for games from LI in HS and during college breaks, I was merely telling you about cheap tickets.

It looks like the attendance may have been raised by this offer. I wonder how many of these cheap seats were sold, but I'd guess between 2,000-3,000. It gives you an idea that if priced lower, people will come to the Garden. Of course, it was REALLY aggravating to see people with tickets printed on their computer sitting in better seats than my season tix. But overall I think it gave attedance a boost.

I got a ticket near the bottom, directly at mid-court in Sec 117 for $30 from a scalper. Way better than the season tickets I've had for several years. I've spent half of what I had been paying for my season tix and I've attended all but 1 home game.

Does anyone know what other games this was offered for?

Thanks,

I check out this forum once in awhile but never joined. My first time posting. But just a heads up that code REDSTORM should work for any of the upcoming games at The Garden through the Ticketmaster website. I already bought the weekend package from the school. I'm in the upper deck center court since I went with the lower priced package.

Tickets cost me $30 through the school. With the code they would have cost me $26.50 and I would be a section or 2 over and a few rows further back. But the code saves you a lot if you want lower seats they are around $44.50 a piece vs $77. Ticketmaster make their money on $12 a ticket no matter what.
