Brady Status

My guess is it will mostly depend on the feedback he gets from Coach regarding his role going forward.
Agree 100 percent. Can’t blame him for wanting to play. So if coach signals he’s basically a back up I’d expect him to seek other opportunities. If coach hypes his pt than he could stay. He might also get the sense that maybe he’s so better in a lower conference level.

Have to think he'd have to drop down a level if he's expecting/hoping to game a guaranteed more prominent role somewhere. His best bet may be to stick around, but nothing wrong with gauging interest
St Mary’s would be a nice spot to land. Plenty of good options out west if that’s what he chooses.

Our defense also got a lot better. Not saying that's the reason for it, but we took it up three notches.
I, prob like many of you on here, have a bias to players on the roster, esp those that commit out of HS.

Looking at this in a positive way... if a player who i would be very happy to retain, is seeking opportunity elsewhere, the staff must be targeting more skilled talent additions...

I definitely want Brady back. I want everyone back except one guy, lol. I also 100% share your view that our staff is in full control of the portal, until proven otherwise.

I just think post-Creighton, this team looks completely different. They've established their identity as an overly athletic and long team who will hound you on defense and not give you an inch to breathe + rebound the hell out of you. They did all of that without Brady. I think we'd be better with him, but I'm not sure he's getting 10+mpg consistently and I don't know if he gets that next year. I'd imagine its something where he's given an opportunity to compete but nothing's promised.

Depending on his priorities and what he wants, Brady-STJ is a good match and it makes sense to keep it going another year.

Genuinely curious, why do you think it is a good match if you don’t think he’s getting even 10 minutes a game, that is a terrible fit for Brady. Since he was averaging 16.5 this year, shooting almost 48% from the floor, almost 38% from 3, and 83% from the line, I don’t agree with your 10 minute prediction but no one has an idea what the SJU roster will look like next year.

"Depending on his priorities and what he wants" is honestly doing a lot of work in that sentence. I don't really know what he wants, but some of the things I can see him prioritizing are: continuing his rehab with familiar staff, enjoying himself on a very successful team, and playing under a legendary coach.

I don't have inside knowledge but I'm assuming he's doing a lot of his rehab stuff in NY and with STJ staff. Transferring would disrupt that. I also think for as many transfers that end up working well for the player, many don't as well. It would be his third year under Pitino so he'd know exactly what to expect, the system, and most of the players around him. He fits a need for the team (shooting -- albeit uneven and unproven), and showed high IQ on the court. He seems to be genuinely really enjoying himself on the team and is stepping into a glue role. By redshirting this year, he's still got plenty of time to play serious minutes in college. He's said before that he understands older players in college (because of COVID eligibility) is making it harder for guys his age to play. He may think -- I have to compete for minutes on preseason top 15 team, but its a familiar environment, my buddies are here, Pitino's incredible, and it's been a helluva ride. Worst case, I go somewhere else after next year and have two years.

His dad is a coach, and maybe he wants to be one someday as well. Rick is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and it seems like the family's all very happy with him.

I’m going to speculate and think about this stuff after the season

Think every fan loves Brady and hope he stays.

I saw the Trilly stuff and interpreted it as him being a “portal candidate” if Pitino/him think that’s the best path. So Pitino will very much have a say IMO and I think that’s true for everyone on the roster. I’m betting on Pitino to keep most anyone he wants to keep and thinks it makes sense to keep.

Regardless we know from last offseason our staff is doing their diligence and prepared for anything. And RP clearly values continuity and culture guys.

Love is a very strong word.

Brady coming back would mean that he has three years of eligibility left after this redshirt year. He was making strides this year. If healthy, I can see him having an positive impact on our team over the next two or three years. The young man has always exhibited a positive attitude, has shown flashes of potential and was shooting the ball well before he got injured.

Also has a positive impact that doesn't show up in the box score. Early in the season I recall Pitino calling him the "MVP" of one game but saying most of the viewing public wouldn't know it from just looking at the stats.

Coachable player, who just has to make shots in the role he has had to date. He does do some little things like feed the post well and move without the ball. He hustles on D and imo just has to improve his on the ball play. I agree there is a place on the roster for him and Rick will determine how much time he gets in conjunction with whoever arrives via portal.

And he liked to crash the boards. I think his shot suffered from either hesitancy or over aggressiveness from not being in a rhythm with playing time. CRP has always spoken highly of him. And seeing him engaged with the team on the bench is encouraging too.

Agree 100%. This is a good young man who gives his all to St. John's. Would love to see him next year, healthy with another year of Coaches development under his belt. Having a core injury like he does makes shooting really tough. Hurts every time he extends arms to shoot. We need to keep talented, good kids like this at St. John's.

Your entire commentary on Brady is based on nothing but assumption and speculation. You certainly have every right to do that, no question, but why single him out? He was an essential part of the rotation before he got hurt but chose to keep playing; no praise for any of that from most posters just the constant speculation that there is no place for him on this roster when there very much WAS a place for him before the injuries.

I literally said we'd be better with him and I want him back. All i said is minutes wouldn't be guaranteed and that our defense ratcheted up three notches after Creighton.

With the inference being that the defense got better because Dunlap was not playing which is absolute and utter nonsense; completely ignoring that Pitino sat back and never pressured Creighton, let them completely play the game at their tempo. In point if fact said he didn’t press because the team couldn’t in the post game press conference, only to have them miraculously turn it around the very next game.
The DIFFERENCE in the defense was in Pitino finally either recognizing or finally acknowledging that was the way to maximize this team, something he could never figure out last year. And being fair and objective it is very possible there was no way.
Pitino is a great, great coach, one of the best ever, no question, but he was and is not infallible and he messed up that game and IMO, flat out lost the Baylor game by not inserting Smith to hound the ball up the court in case Eijofor missed.
Now, having said that, Pitino deserves all the accolades in the world for figuring it out and making this team a legitimate NC threat.
But your assumption connecting Dunlap being out of the lineup and the change in the defense holds no water IMO.
