Unfortunately, I can see us being taken right to the final seconds any time we play a team who can shoot and has size. I honestly thought we'd have much more power to pull away from these bum teams, but again I put that on staff. I just don't see the adjustments being made. Frye and Co. in the BG game come out guns blazing making practically every 3. Then halftime so you'd expect that to obviously be addressed. Then we come back out 2nd half and bang a pair of 3's immediately. I can understand if these were all well-contested 3's they just made in miracle fashion as those do happen...but 90% of the time our defenders have their hands down, giving them an open look. I also don't understand the lack of motion on offense without the ball. When we were at our best vs. Loyola we were making hard cuts to the basket, making the extra pass, and finding the open man.
I rewatched some BG clips and there were also 3-4 times at least where our guards penetrated taking on 3 defenders without kicking out to a wide open player behind the arc...and then missed. Simon was usually the culprit. We were too predictable and they knew we'd drive to the hoop so they had help defense coming over. We need to keep teams guessing and keep them off-balance. Be unpredictable. Drive for layups a few times but then fake the drive and kick out to the open man. Another play, drive then kick out, then fake the shot and make the extra pass to a usually wide open player. This is what Villanova does so well. Thus far there's way too much 1 on 3 Melo type ball. This will not end in a win against Rutgers if it continues. You save the opponent defenses lots of breath and effort by passing and not moving without the ball.
