Bobby Hurley Gets New Contract At Buffalo

Just a little perspective for the Bobby Hurley cult. When Danny was hired at Wagner, all of the articles in the local paper(SI Advance) were about how nice it was for Danny to bring big brother along for the ride. You know rescuing him from being out of basketball basically.
Now people are rushing to fire a coach who got us into the tournament for him. I guess he has come a reallly long way. From Wagner college tag along to SJU savior.

Funny, but perhaps Danny is more on the radar, of course assuming SJU makes decision to cut bait. I, for one, have greater respect for DH's body of work at Wagner & Rhody. Not perfect, but obviously more impressive than Bobby's. Frankly I have heard Danny & Mullin's names more than Bobby's very recently.

Forgot the sarcastic emoticon. -AUSTOUR

Ok thought Marillac slipped you some Kool Aid.

For the record he may very well turn into the next Izzo for all I know. My only point is SJU is not in the position to throw away coaches that can get us into the NCAA for a guy who coached 2 seasons at Buffalo.

Get it

Does anyone remember the movie Goonies? At the end the Spanish maid was trying to tell Josh Brolin and Rudy's Dad not to sign the contract to sell the Goonie home. "No pen, no sign, no pen, no sign". That wil be Marillac at the Buffalo / Hurley contract signing.

LOL big Karma points to you for connecting my favorite movie to my favorite coaching candidate.

I can say it in Spanish too if it keeps Hurley from signing.

Impressive. 11 years with Nathalie and I only remember spanish curse words mainly.( from when she gets angry at me when I'm watching SJU hoops and getting pissed at losses) If Hurley signs somewhere else I can help you with those

I know I am not thinking clearly on this issue, but in my own defense I am impressed more and more with Mullin when I hear him speak and how he carries himself. I would hire him in an instant, just because, and I know he would bleed R&W, have a no nonsense burning desire to win. Every person in a gym on the recruiting trail in the NYC area would want to meet him, and how could you not be impressed with one of our own who is in the NBA HOF.

More perspective...
Coach K has reached out to Bobby and left him a standing offer to join his staff, but it was a lower position than Bobby felt he deserved. Bobby wanted to be a head coach right out of the gate (Marist job after Magarity left comes to mind) or at least a high assistant. Even for Bobby Hurley that is not a typical entry point for a coach (see Greg Paulus, another four-year starting PG at Duke) starting as a Video Coordinator.

Rescuing Bobby by bringing him on to Wagner is one way to look at it. I always saw it was capitalizing on Bobby's fame and credibility. Danny can coach and develop his guys no question, but with Bobby in his corner he had a recruiting machine.

I didn't think Bobby (or anyone) could turn around the Buffalo basketball team. Terrible weather, no history, no facilities, no tournament appearances, relatively tough conference....
He surprised the crap out of me and the creative recruitment of top level JUCOs, transfers, and even a top rated PG from a school like Hargrave. He didn't inherit a tournament team...he built with his own hands in a matter of days after being hired.

I wasn't wild about Mullin as a potential candidate, but I've warmed to the idea too.
My only concern was his ability to recruit, but the rumor is him and Slice have a terrific relationship and Barry would want to be on his staff.

The more I think about it, this may be the way to go. No fan can be upset with Mullin if that is the school's choice.

No such offer ever existed from Coach K!! Bobby was left out in the cold. What kind of standing offer? who would coach K of fired to make room for him? that's just crazy.

I would be surprised if Chris would do it but there would be no greater representative for the university.

Do we know that Mullin has any desire to coach, let alone do so in college?

@prepbullseye: As I previously indicated, I've been told if Bobby Hurley is offered the DePaul job he will take it. Interviews Saturday.

One thing that has to be considered when hiring a legend is how a mediocre or poor coaching career would impact their legacy. Mullin's legacy at St. John's is pristine right now. There might not be one player more associated with a program in college basketball history. Would he be willing to risk that? Would the university wan to?

He has no coaching or recruiting experience and he hasn't bee associated with the college game in 30 years.

I am surprisingly open to the idea given his lack of experience. I would that that we would move to the front of the line for Maverick Rowan at the very least.

thats a joke...if Mullin wants to coach, he will be the coach! I dont know who makes the final decisions but I would say 99% of the fan base would want to give Mullin a crack. I know he hasnt coached blah blah blah, but he has more knowledge in his fingernail than half of the coaches out there. Frankly, Mullin as a coach would be a dream for the city. I will add he will need a great X/Os coach on bench, and whooing slice to the team would solidify recruits. Although, what kid wouldnt want to play for NYC legend, Hall of Fame player like Mullin ?

I know this is silly, but whenever Mullin is in the house, I feel better, elated. It not only calls to mind what a great era his was, but what a great community we have. Mullin knows, appreciates, and understand this, and if you've ever interacted with him for even a couple of minutes, he chats with you as an equal, and not someone inferior to him. Just seeing him on the sideline building something special would have me believing the sky is the limit should he come here, because honestly, he has some unfinished business in leading this school to the promised land, and I think he would feel that way too.

Keep in mind that pro jobs are much shakier than college jobs. Just ask Mark Jackson.

As crazy as it sounds, and it is crazy, he'd be the first person I'd call.

Yes, Mullin was offered the HC job for the Sacramento Kings. Mullin turned it down but said that he did have an interest in coaching in the future. I would sign up for Mullin and Slice without the slightest hesitation. He looks very happy at Kentucky though and from what I hear, him and Cal are like brothers. Seems like a bigger reach than Mullin.

Get Mullin first....they will follow......
MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't read every post but Slice would join Mullin's staff if he were to become head coach? We would have a team full of tough nosed NYC players if that were true. Slice has recruited the area a ton better than Lavin has.
