Big East & UConn

two best lines from that article:

"The [UConn] basketball teams are an exception because they have built brand equity over the years because of their success. But even that, particularly on the men's side, could erode rather quickly."

Big East commissioner Val Ackerman told The Courant that the Big East "is not interested in expansion at this time."

Just me, but I don't think Ackerman would say anything else. We'll see how this plays out after UConn either gets in Big12 or not next week.

Dead on!

If Fox wants UConn, if available, end of story I suspect. I sense BE Commissioner would agree and Presidents would fall in line.

From what I'm hearing, the BE is very excited about the possibility of adding the women's program.

Does anyone else really care about them?
Besides the 4,000 old farts that would travel to Queens to watch them win by 50 points?

Fox Sports cares about them. Think any of the current BE women's programs are a draw? Think having a perennial national championship team isn't a plus for the stature of your conference?

The departure of ConnU's women's program has been a big blow to the conference. Made it much harder to recruit. The women's programs would welcome the Lady Huskies back with open arms.

The biggest problem in taking Conn into the BE is that it will only be a temporary move. Since the big 5 football conferences pay in excess of 20 million dollars a year over what the BE pays Conn will be looking to jump from the moment they join.
They will be willing to pay any financial penalty to leave the BE so if they are accepted make the penalty as high as possible because they won't be staying long.

A poll on the UConn fan site "Boneyard" indicates that a majority of fans favor UConn continuing in the American Conference over the Big East if UConn gets rejected from the B12.

Makes no sense to leave a conference where you can still play football and dominate basketball and go to the dance every year. The downside is that it is a chit conference and its closest rival is Temple. Those Boneyard fans are delusional and I hope they enjoy flying to those BIG GAMES in Tulsa, Dallas, Tulane and the other exotic AAC locations.

I doubt that FOX sees any financial gain in bringing in a women's team. The networks only care about football. Men's basketball is a distant second. The other sports have no impact on their decisions. What are the SNY ratings for that team? I check them out once in while to see if they are winning by 100 points.

If the Big 12 doesn't expand then nobody leaves the AAC and it would probably make sense from UCONN's perspective to stay as long as their chances of making the NCAA tournament are not diminished. If Cincinnati and Memphis are hypothetically accepted by the Big 10, the AAC might fall in stature and make it harder to get an at large bid. At that point UCONN might want into the Big East.

Makes no sense to me. That conference is a joke year in year out, and will only get worse. Eventually it's going to have an impact on their recruiting.

You could be correct but right now Kevin Ollie has done a great job recruiting in addition to winning a national championship. Same goes for the women's program , they continue to win and recruit at the highest level.

Right. It's still only a couple of years out since the Big East split. I'm just waiting to see if in time, recruiting will be hugely impacted there. I guess it helps they have top notch facilities. The major issue I see is that the top recruits want the national exposure of a major conference, and want to play the top talent night in night out. You don't get that in the AAC.
