Agree 100%. Duke is a blue blood program. (No pun intended). As much as I can't stand them...they are much bigger than the coach. Much like UCLA, Kansas, Kentucky and North Carolina have won championships under different coaches...the same will be true with Duke....Duke is finished once coach K goes.....
Don't bet on it.
IMO the University of Syracuse may have a gap when Boeheim retires and promotes Hopkins.
Hopkins is a great recruiter but an unproven head coach.
Losing Cuse and UConn was the death knell for the big east

They could take a step back for a few years.
Quite frankly I think the name "Big East" is holding us back.

Here's what will hold us back: We suck and we have basically been irrelevant for more than a decade. While our posters talk about how bad programs like DePaul and Seton Hall are, they fail to realize that there is no functional difference between them and us.
It's not the league, it's St John's.
If we didn't play in this league called the big east we would probably get only one or two NCAA bids. The big east is horrible. Creighton and Nova the cream of the league? Thats two very flawed teams that could easily be knocked out in the first round. Creighton is a one man team obviously and Nova is a cold shooting night away from being blown out by anyone. I think the big east will be lucky to get three NCAA bids

In this age of the dumbing down of America, like it or not, you are right. I always look at the percentage of teams from the top conferences making the dance as a benchmark but I know I, and others who do the same, are in the vast minority. This is rarely alluded to in the media either.
Which is why I now endorse Newsie's 48 team mega conference idea. That conference could get a record 10 teams into the dance.

I think people on this board dont realize or seem to forget that UCONN (having failed to gain a ticket to the ACC) would love to join the BE. With a condition that they take their football and play elsewhere, I dont see a problem with that and I think it would be a good thing for the Conference even though I despise UCONN and it would probably give them a better hold on recruiting again. Then Fox can tell the BE who else to select and there would be 12 teams which I think is enough as we dont play BCS football

Couldn't agree more, dee. As much as I hate PUKON, if we could get them to commit to playing basketball in the BE, and they stick to that commitment, I am all for bringing them back. As an aside, they will never be a big time football program.

They will never agree to come back unless there is an "out clause" for them b/c the minute the Big 10, ACC or Big 12 come calling UConn will bolt.

I don't know about 48 teams, but a mega conference made up of big city teams would create more of a buzz than a mediocre Big East. If the conference stays as is, the top ballers will continue to choose the top major conferences over the mid majors. The BE is mid major. Some Big East schools have recruited well. That's mostly because the perception of the conference hasn't changed much. Three or fewer bids over the next couple of years will change that.
That will make it harder for us to recruit as well.

Why would any team in the BE now want to split the tv money with 47 other teams? In what bizzarro world would that make sense?
the BE will expand if it makes financial sense. The added revenue you would get from televising all these mediocre teams would never come close to offsetting having to split the pot with so many other teams. SJU would end up with 500k a year instead of $5mil.
Not to mention as weak as the BE might be, you just water down the brand more by adding all these lesser known teams.
How many teams would actually add value to the BE, maybe 10? And I think that's pushing it. But to add them you would also end up adding the Qunnipiac's and Wyomings.
The 48 team league is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard. At that point why are you even in Div 1 NCAA? Make your own division and play for the 1AA trophy like football schools do. Stupid
