Big East Expansion

Was just typing up this thread lol.

AAC commissioner sent out an urgent GOR request to all AAC members this morning. Appears Val may be talking with UConn...

https://the-boneyard.com/threads/aac-grant-of-rights.137263/

Especially around page 4 things get interesting.

If it happens, I'd be happy to see UConn added. They'd increase the amount of money given out per school in our next TV contract.

I understand there are concerns with them, but I trust Val to make the right decision. She's been an excellent commissioner for the conference.

Hate the idea. Got to prepare for it as a program.
Last time they were 'in', they took over the Conference and their nasty fans ruled MSG. Used to have to ride Metro North back to CT with them gloating.
But as Paultz says, it's likely "inevitable".
The fact they reigned in the BEC and MSG was our fault.
Hopefully, our Staff and AD will build a winning program and get our fans' butts into MSG as well.
Nothing like tough competition when you can beat them...makes for exciting hoops and hypes the Conference.
Let's go St. John's!

No way to uconn. Do not give them an out. They wanted to leave because they arrogantly thought one of the power 5 would invite them in because they would bring hoops, and the new conference would help improve football.

Well, it did not happen. And it could not have happened to a better school. Plus, it is not fair because the Big East is made of private schools. Uconn has the tax dollar advantage.

Let uconn bring their football program down to FCS level first (which they cannot, because there will be blood after spending tax dollars to make the upgrades). And even then I would say "hell no."

I'm all for it if they agree to an exorbitant exit fee that would essentially guarantee they stay for good.

The Big East will expand to include at least 12 teams.

I agree kranmars, but as Paultz says, "it's inevitable". Wonder if a 'rule' could be added to limit UCONN to similar $-resource levels as the the rest of the Conference? Probably not.
Also, would luv to see Gonzaga & Dayton & Loyola, Chicago, maybe St. Louis, join...could have a 'West Division' to go with an East Division.
We shall see, but changes are coming.
Thing is, this time we've got to plan for it and be in the mix year in / year out.

We need the Garden and the Garden wants Uconn. No ACC team can offer what Uconn does for a conference tournament. They show up in block after block of buses.

I think we'll end up in an east-west bifurcated conference with Gonzaga and Wichita State coming aboard.

West: Gonzaga, Wichita St., Creighton, DePaul, Butler, St. Louis, Marquette

East: SJU, Prov, Uconn, Nova, Gtown, SH, Xavier

I love how the league currently has 9 other members we all like, respect and root for (well, a minority doesn't like Georgetown/Nova/Hall). However, I always felt it was missing a villain.

Judging by the reaction in this thread, UConn would fill that role. We used to root against conference rivals like UConn/Cuse/Louisville all year long. We despise those teams, but they made for some really great games when we played them. Beating Syracuse during Mullin's first two years made those seasons a lot more enjoyable. Duke is the closest thing we currently have to that, and last year's win was incredible. However, they're far away and we only play them once a year.

Playing a team we all hate is IMO healthy for the league and St. John's. That's the biggest thing we lost in conference realignment. I am not in favor of multiple teams we all hate (AKA- Syracuse/Louisville/UConn), but that's never going to happen. I think we can handle one team we all dislike.

UConn is already recruiting very well under Hurley, and that won't change. I rather they be in the same league than a rival.

Plus, there are other bonuses like more TV money for us (and the 9 other BE schools), an additional MSG game every year, etc.

It is. And unfortunately they don't have any plans to end it because of the large investment they placed into it. The program is costing the school Monday at this point. Sas

While the East/West thing is interesting as several schools have similar profile, I don't think there's a pressing need for it. Gonzaga's just way to far away, Witchita St. isn't interesting to me and doubt. St. Louis fans travel much or bring added excitement to league nationally.

As much as I don't want UCONN from a fan perspective, it is a decent move from business / financials... wouldn't be surprised if any of this went into the MSG/BET extension. Just don't have any idea if UCONN can really pull plug unless they get agreement to keep football elsewhere and Big East gets right protections in place.

The investment includes some pretty hefty donations from alumni (probably not you) and friends that would not be too pleased.

You guys as residents and grads I'm sure follow it a lot more closely than I do. But if something keeps hemorrhaging money something has to give. Donations aside.

forget UCANT (LOL) bring in Dayton!!!! Outstanding fan base. Good basketball and as ammeter of the BE they will get better.

This would be terrible for St. John's and Providence. State schools should have never been in the conference as Kranmars noted. Schools like Uconn, West Virginia, Rutgerd, Virginia Tech, Cincinnati and even Pittsburgh always had financial advantage. It's what eventually killed the conference. We are having a tough time now recruiting against Uconn. If they get games at Prudential and MSG with the Big East tourney our local recruiting will become non-existent. We would need a strong national recruiting presence and a staff that players really would be attracted to.

Key is they want to sell the garden out for every session. Uconn in the big east will do that.
Simply $$ decision, I am all for it. Better games at MSG for us.

Agreed Ralph, bring in Dayton and if you want 12 then bring in VCU also. Two excellent programs.
