Big East Coach of the Year

Kevin O'Neil of Fox sports 1 just stated that Lavin should be Big East coach of the year and got his vote

As good as Wright has been, my vote still goes to Holtmann. Took over a program amid controversy and has just done a fantastic job.

Well, that's one less reporter I need to bother listening too. Completely discredited in my mind.

Lavin has arguably the most talent in the conference and has his team in 5th place. On what planet does that equate to Coach of the Year accolades? Absolutely ridiculous to even mention his name in the conversation. He's lucky if he retains his job.

He's lucky if he retains his job? Are you kidding me? See, here's where you lose all credibility. He may not get an extension, but he will certainly retain his job for at least the next year.

It absolutely astounds me how you guys are able to take every positive experience and turn it into a negative.

I don't agree with a lot of what you write, but I've always thought you were one of the more level headed posters who were critical of Lavin. But you just proved that you're not. And please, spare me the fallacy that you root for the guys to win but you don't like Lavin.

I totally agree with the part that some posters are not being honest when they say that they root for the team to win. With the amount of animosity directed towards Lavin and the stated desire to have a new coach, they can't possibly be rooting for the team to win. This goes against their stated agenda.

What did I say in there that makes anyone think it's a fallacy to root for the kids but not like Lavin. How do you know I'm not enjoying this run? Of course I am. And I know many other posters who are critical of the coach but overjoyed when we win.
It's very very easy to root for this group of seniors. We've gotten to know them so well.

Honestly, anyone who doesn't think I enjoy SJU success should hangout with me at the games, or meet me at a bar for an away game. The win Saturday made my weekend for me, just as I assume it did for most of the posters on this message board. That's why we're rabid fans.

Also, fwiw Panther, I said he would be lucky to retain his job. Not that I think he should be fired. Just that it isn't a foregone conclusion.
I still have my reservations obviously, but we can talk about that in the offseason.
All I'm saying is he has the talent. Dangelo was the conference's preseason Player of the Year, and Jordan was 1st team all conference, with Obekpa 2nd team.

Don't tell me you are the coach of the year when you have a team with a lot of experience, the best player in the conference, and two other all conference caliber players and you're 5th in the league. That just doesn't add up.
Not to mention, one of your previously unheralded players has come out of nowhere to make a strong case for the player of the year himself.

He's doing what should be expected thus far this season. This is a tournament caliber team. Slipping into the NCAAs isn't cause to coronate the coach.

Considering our thin roster and the loss of one NBA player and another who got close, this team overachieved. If a coach gets the blame for the bad, consistency requires that they get the credit for the good. Then again, last season's team greatly underachieved. Lavin had a much better year coaching this season. He used Dom properly on offense, and kept a positive attitude during the awful Big East start. Perhaps his greatest achievement was getting Obekpa and Greene to stay, and keeping Jordan from bolting mid season.

We are actually IMO one win and one bid from overachieving, and a couple of bad losses and no bid from underachieving. With SJU there is often no middle ground.

Great point. You can argue that Marquette game could be difference between an extension and a buyout.

A solid majority of this board kills Jarvis and Lavin for winning with someone else's players. We have to apply the logic consistently. Butler was going to be a tournament team this season regardless of who the coach was. I've been predicting it for months and it wasn't exactly finding a diamond in the rough. They returned two starters and two guys that played 20-25 minutes for a team that came within one shot of the Sweet 16 two years ago. They added Etherington from IU and had the best three recruiting classes in school history the last three seasons.

Marillac: "Butler looks damn good to me. I was very impresed with Roosevelt Jones two years ago. He'll be one of the best players in the conference right off the bat and has three years (1 redshirt) under his belt. I see them anywhere from 4th through 6th....ceiling of 3rd"

The pick either goes to Jay Wright for his overall excellence and sheer dominance or to Lavin for getting the most out of his roster.

Safe to say they exceeded your expectations? ;)

Sorry, Des, but 'lucky to retain his job' is not the same as 'it isn't a foregone conclusion' he'll be retained.

And we're not 'slipping into the NCAAs'. Not in any way. We've come on strong in February and we've played our way into a solid tourney team. At the moment probably an 8 or 9 seed. Maybe a 7.

Can't have it both ways. If it's just sloppy use of language, and you don't want to be misunderstood, then you need to pay a bit more attention to what you say and how you say it.

No one us telling you Lavin is coach of the year on this fan forum so stop talking to yourself. ;)

As for having a team with a lot of experience, only 3 seniors start on this team and there is virtually no bench to speak of so that experience is a wash. We do not have the best player in the conference. To me that honor likely goes to Kris Dunn. He is a future NBA point guard. We all love D'lo but those Georgetown games reflect on his overall body of work and ability.
When you mention one of our previously unheralded players has come out of nowhere to make a strong case for the player of the year himself then the staff should be proud of that player's development.
Fact is that if St. John's had not lost to DePaul and Creighton Steve Lavin would be a candidate for coach of the year. That does not erase the disastrous 2014 recruiting fiasco that has put him on tenuous ground and these seniors deserved a better effort to provide them with talented support that could have made them a top 10 team along with Villanova. For that reason Steve Lavin does not deserve to be coach of the year since he is just as responsible for those two inexplicable losses and thin bench. Plus, he stopped wearing ties and we all know that the coach of the year always wears a tie. ;)

Fair enough. Precise language is important.
It's also dangerous to speak for others.
My personal opinion is that Lavin should not be offered an extension. That shouldn't surprise anyone. With that said, I hope he wins the conference tournament and the NCAAs.
But I really don't want to have an in-depth conversation about it now. I think it's best if we wait a few more weeks to talk about the coach's future.
The only reason I'm engaging in it at all, is because it was mentioned he could be Coach of the Year in this conference. I don't think that's appropriate.

BUT, I do think it's ridiculous that anyone question whether I want this team to win. Nothing I've ever said would suggest that. And the posters who've met me in real life know better.
