Big East Coach of the Year

I am frustrated that we don't have a better reserve core. I do think they have gone from mediocre to decent as need has set in. I even blame Lavin for not using them more in the early games---although I concede that he and the coaching staff know better than me whether they were or were not ready to contribute. I am disappointed that the 2014 class didn't pan out. 2015 is too early to complain about (although I suspect that it will be ok).

Nonetheless, I have enjoyed this season immensly. There are games that I feel that we should have won but that is the nature of sports. The only real disappointment I have felt this year was when Obekpa elbowed the Butler kid in the head---both for the unsportsmanship and for the fact that he got himself tossed from a very important game.

Opinions will differ but I truly believe that Lavin will have us competing for a national championship in the near future. I have no problem with those who feel otherwise. It's just frustrating to read complaints about what he wears, his travel budget and what restaurants he eats at.

Kevin O'Neil of Fox sports 1 just stated that Lavin should be Big East coach of the year and got his vote

Well, that's one less reporter I need to bother listening too. Completely discredited in my mind.

Lavin has arguably the most talent in the conference and has his team in 5th place. On what planet does that equate to Coach of the Year accolades? Absolutely ridiculous to even mention his name in the conversation. He's lucky if he retains his job.

He's lucky if he retains his job? Are you kidding me? See, here's where you lose all credibility. He may not get an extension, but he will certainly retain his job for at least the next year.

It absolutely astounds me how you guys are able to take every positive experience and turn it into a negative.

I don't agree with a lot of what you write, but I've always thought you were one of the more level headed posters who were critical of Lavin. But you just proved that you're not. And please, spare me the fallacy that you root for the guys to win but you don't like Lavin.

I totally agree with the part that some posters are not being honest when they say that they root for the team to win. With the amount of animosity directed towards Lavin and the stated desire to have a new coach, they can't possibly be rooting for the team to win. This goes against their stated agenda.

Sorry but I strongly disagree.
As a moderator I try to read each and every post written and can honestly say that I believe only one poster has an agenda against the coach on this board. Only one.
Others dislike the coach for a multitude of reasons which are all valid in their minds but may not be to others. As an example Lavin is clearly the face of the university and is far more known than our president. Many believe that the face of SJU , and especially for the salary he is being paid should dress properly in public. Others may not see it that way. There is merit in each argument. If you are a supporter your attitude is who cares if he wears a tie or not. If you don't love coach you believe he should dress accordingly as anything else is a poor reflection upon the school.
Again there are no haters in my opinion just fans who believe the school could do better or get a better bang for their buck.
For the time being I truly wish both camps would stop talking about a new coach or Lavins faults and just concentrate on the great run the team has had as of late and forget the negativity. There will be more than ample time to discuss same when the season has ended.

But you see therein lies the problem. Some on here seemingly haven't been able to enjoy this run of success because they absolutely do not like the coach and will not support him.

Holtmann
wright
Cooley
Lavin

that would be my top 4 for sure. Maybe flip flop lavin and cooley but the 1st 2 are right on

Coach Cooley is grossly underpaid compared to Steve Lavin and especially Oliver Purnell.
Interesting JT3 at $2.7 million not in the top 4 for Coach of the Year consideration. ;)
We will know about this and so much more in a few weeks.

Traditionally, annual salary has nothing to do with MVP, ROY, POY, COY, Oscar, Emmy, ESPY Awards, etc. They're all about achievement.

I agree 100 %. But I threw the salary in there because those that want to fire Lavin seem to forget what Purnell and Thompson earn. It begs the question do you fire one of the top 4 coaches in the Big East who, in the 4 years he actually coached, won 21, 17, 20 and 20+ this year all because he earns too much in their opinion?

I find it funny that we have one thread discussing who our next coach will be and another thread with the consensus that Lavin will be third in the coach of the year award in the conference.

So much for logic, eh SJU14? (Glad to see someone paid attention in Philosophy 101.)

Considering our thin roster and the loss of one NBA player and another who got close, this team overachieved. If a coach gets the blame for the bad, consistency requires that they get the credit for the good. Then again, last season's team greatly underachieved. Lavin had a much better year coaching this season. He used Dom properly on offense, and kept a positive attitude during the awful Big East start. Perhaps his greatest achievement was getting Obekpa and Greene to stay, and keeping Jordan from bolting mid season.

We are actually IMO one win and one bid from overachieving, and a couple of bad losses and no bid from underachieving. With SJU there is often no middle ground.
