You have to be playing defense to employ a strategy. We waver between not covering people and trying to block every shot. This is what is inexplicable with this team, not even pretending intensity.
 
It obvious we are in trouble, but how is that a foul on Mussini- he grabbed the ball out of the rebounders hands...
 
Offseason shopping needs to include a D-minded coach.

Sorry but it is not coaching. You want to say Mullin is not inspiring effort, ok, but we have guys not interested in playing defense. Ahmed opens the game up letting Jenkins shoot two rocking chair 3's and biting for a pump fake for the 6,432 time this year. That is effort, focus, and commitment, not coaching.
 
Is anybody playing defense I do not think so Has coach call a time out this haft Those who paid to watch this game has been robbed I saw enough will not be surprised if we lose by 50 But perhaps Nova will stop playing hard or take the starters out with 15mins left making it look better So was the season a success yes more wins but at the last game of the season should have been much better so I say no it has not been Its called coaching have not see it in the 1st half
 
It's the defending national champs (and not a terrible bet to repeat as same) playing in a tournament game against a team that played a tough game last night and is just happy to be there. It's going about the way you'd expect.

WRT to the defense, yes we are an atrocious defensive team. It has been apparent since the first exhibition game. We cannot or will not play anyone straight up. All the defense amounts to is trying to get turnovers and get blocks, and personally I think the block numbers are a sign of what's wrong with the D, not a good thing (because if we stopped the ball or stopped people playing straight up, the block opportunities would not be there).

I hope/expect that next year Clark will provide tougher on-ball defense, we will have a legit post defender, and Owens can go to the stretch-4 spot he belongs in, which in turn would move Yakwe down to guarding guys he would have a shot against.

However, no argument at all that despite the personnel issues our effort and fundamentals could and should be about a zillion times better. My hope/guess is that the staff just decided to spend this year working on offense and next year they will spend more time on D.

Nova played probably the closest thing to a perfect half of basketball, that I've ever seen.
 
MM is talking about get aroused over winning an 8-9 game by one point vs a team that lost their last six games. Well this should slap us all back to reality in how far we still need to come. It seems like we can never just grab the damn ball, the other team always ends up with it. Maddening!

Do you think these guys would not be interested in playing defense if a guy like Izzo, Bob Knight, Jim Calhoun, Nolan Richardson, hell, even Lavin,was coaching them? If a team isn't playing defense it's a reflection of the coaching philosophy.

Yes and it's just coincidence that it comes against us.
 
I was pondering some scores I saw recently. Bethune-Cookman beat Delaware State and then lost to some North Carolina school by 40. I wonder how many conference tournaments we could win. I was thinking less then 5.

Now back to today's game. Really bad. I think that sums it up.

Really bad on Offense
Really bad on Defense
Really bad Rebounding
Really bad Effort
Really bad Coaching
Really bad compared to most of the basketball we have played since Artest left.
