(BET) (POST GAME) DePaul, Wed ., Mar. 9, 7p, FS-1

Sweet win.  Put it together for one night.  Champ wanted the ball in the first half like a star and leader should.  The 2 headed center worked tonight and seems to be getting better as time goes by, particularly glad to see them not in foul trouble sure helps.  CMA continues to coach with the hot hand approach, and he was judicious in sharing the minutes with tomorrow in mind from the beginning.  To quote Lav, they did a great job in "sharing the sugar".  I cannot remember a SJU game that we had 22A's and 2 TO's; I also wonder if this was achieved by any team.  What is more amazing about the 2 TO's is that we play a fast-paced game.  Tonight was 37 minutes of hell.

Stanley came off limping and did not get back in after that. I hope he was not actually injured and it was just Coach rewarding Nyiwe for his play. He was absolutely outstanding defensively, fought for rebounds, and the points were just the icing on the cake. ...
From my vantage point, Stanley looked like he was in pain and when he left the game not long after he entered it. And with the score so lopsided, CMA may have decided to sit him so he'll be 100% for the Nova game. As for Nyiwe, his contributions on both offense and defense were a revelation. And to think, in preseason, we -- well, a good number of us anyway -- made him the brunt of so many of our jokes and smartass remarks. Who's laughing now?

I remember when the kids blew out Butler a few weeks ago I got all excited hoping a turn around was in site. And then they proceeded to lose the next 3 out of 4 games. So I will treat this win with cautious optimism, hoping for a great game tomorrow but certainly not counting on it. But a win against the Novas would be nice.

Nyiwe was 1 rebound short of his first double-double last night
He had 10 points and 9 rebounds playing only 21 minutes
His progress this season has been absolutely remarkable

Especially when he looks like Magic dribbling from end-to-end for a sweet finger roll.

Great team win.  We came out looking sluggish, but after that first stoppage we morphed into the team that played Seton Hall in Walsh gym.

One point I will make......although he's not a perfect player, I do think Steph Smith should have played more this year. He has a knack for sparking offense and probably could have helped us out of some of those scoring droughts.
I think that each of our rotation players have certain deficiencies and are streaky so much that there are proclamations after each game as to who should play more or less.    Smith surprisingly can take the ball to the hoop and also when hot can torch the nets from three.  I like each of the rotation kids for what they bring to the court, a far cry from the shallow benches we've had for a very long time.

Play like that again and you can beat Nova. We’ve seen upperclassmen get hot for a week and carry a team to the BET trophy before. Champ may not be Kemba Walker or Gerry McNamara, but he could go out and score 25 three more times.

I really don't understand those who say we have no half court offense.   This team can break down the defense for uncontested layups with deft passing and sharp cuts to the basket better than any Johnnies team since the Artest-Bootsy et al days.   The problem we have had is consistently making outside shots.   Nova will not be so easy to beat in a half court offense and will try to force us to burn seconds off the clock and then dare us to shoot over the zone.   If we take the shots they want us to take, they will win.   If we can better control the tempo, make good looks in the half court offense, it will spring guys for cuts to the basket and layups.

This IS a winnable game, but Jay Wright knows this and will have his guys prepared to play us as a very dangerous team in their BET hopes.   Nova should be favored, and I expect Nova to win.  Should we play well and get the shots we want on offense and defend reasonably well, there is a chance this game gets filed as one of our glory days type of wins.

BTW, very pro St. John's crowd at MSG - wish we had some of those who attended with us all season.

Got back to our hotel room in Sarasota in time to see the whole game given the slightly delayed start. One of the most, if not the most enjoyable Johnnie games I've watched this season. Hope everyone is healthy and ready to go tonight. Not ready to see the balls put away for the year yet.

Actually we were staying in a hotel in Ellenton, a little north of Sarasota while visiting my older brother who retired in a town called Parrish.  Flew in and out of Sarasota airport and went fishing out of Sarasota yesterday after spending Tuesday at Siesta Key beach; beautiful beach. Heading home today in time for Villanova game.

Coach Anderson has taken a lot of heat from me and several posters on this site and elsewhere.  His steering the ship last night was terrific.  From the first timeout to the end of the game his decisions were right on target.  His substitutions were effective, timely and successful.  Good job CMA.
Glad he reads Redmen.com. /media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png
Now go out and disembowel Nova.  There is some hope for this season.  Go Johnnies!  Go CMA!

Great game from the guys.  For a season filled with highs and lows this was superb.
Excellent game from the bigs,  18 points and 13 rebounds.
Posh-Wusu 16 points,  12 assists and 1 turnover and took turns with Montez to stifle Freeman-Liberty.
Stph Smith took 3 charges in addition to 13 points.
Yes Champs was Champs.  Nuff said.

They say any given Sunday.  How about any given Thursday!

I know the area well. Longboat is the next island north of Siesta. I can't wait to live there.
Get home safely!
