(BET) #4 Seton Hall, Thur., Mar. 14. 2:30p, FS-1

Respectfully disagree. If we don't get in it is horrible. It's the same ole, same ole so close yet so far heartbreaker loss we're only too accustomed to and the season is rendered an unmitigated abject failure.
To put things in perspective. A team was recruited with limited time. Rick "got what he could" out of what was left out there when he was hired. He could not help some unfortunate departures like Storr and Jones who had been invited back. As we have all touched on previously these were not "all his style guys to a T" most were plug and play talent his year and had some prior translatable flashes that were showcased that could carve out a 1-year competitive role here.

At the point in the recruiting cycle that he was hired, you have to do what you can and get experienced starters with pretty much an empty cupboard. I would put more stock into how Wilcher, Brady and Zuby develop the next few years to assess things.

Making any type of legitimate post-season whether its NCAAs or NIT is still a damning verdict on Anderson. Rick had less time and gets us there in 1 year with primarily plug and plays and you had 4 years to develop talent and failed and never got us to post-season.

I would be grateful that we have a Hall of Fame Coach, are trending in the right direction as a program for the first time in years and even have plans for a new facility etc. All good stuff.

They did use a box and 1 and David Wingate , an elite defender, followed Mullin everywhere. But everyone knows Mullin beat himself and us.
I will leave it at that.
Yes , Wingate was a very good player . But , elite defenders had 4 years to throttle Mullin and didn’t .
Same thing in the NBA , they tried to shut him down but , failed . I recall Scottie Pippen saying he couldn’t stop Chris . “ Mullin went back door on me so much , I wanted Phil Jackson to put MJ on him .”
“ Michael didn’t fare well either .”
I’m curious , if you will , why did Mullin “ beat himself and us?”
There seems some underlying reason for your comment .

so you're saying Hurley is the nutjob of the nutmeg?

The problem is I've had the sneaking suspicion since the hire that even an all time great hall of fame coach is not enough to eradicate the sucktitude and curse that is St. Johns basketball. If we don't dance, fear and anxiety grows as my hypothesis is proven correct in year one. It's a failure.

I think you have to go back to Lavin if you only count years where you could actually attend the tournament. We had the bye the COVID year.
During the 2020 BET (Covid year), we were playing Creighton and leading 38-35 at the half. It was the only game that even got started so, technically, we won the BET in 2020! 😜

Just a thought , CMA in retrospect was a poor choice by Cragg .
Just fired by Arkansas , his dream job , for not getting his teams into SEC contention and underperforming in the NCAA , the few years he made it. Arkansas fans warned us .

Our fan base gave him credit for good Coaching for nearly all his time here, until the Mic’d up game .
The Red Flags were there long before that , with most of the Mullin players asking out . Figgy , Greg Williams , Etc .
Cragg made 2 big mistakes , hiring CMA and then , giving him a undeserved long term and expensive deal .
My guess (just a guess) is Mullin's battles during college that went unaddressed.

Could have performed at an outta this world level, maybe.
Ok , I know Chris had his demons and finally embarked on his journey to Sobriety . Good for him that he saved his life as a result .

What seems to surface is that Mullin might nkt have been 100 percent for that game vs G’Town .
Which , from a team performance standpoint would suggest that Louie put the ball in Berry’s hands with Mark Jackson, not Mike Moses at the controls .
It might have made a difference .

There have been several checkpoints this yr where I’ve said “ok if we lose it’s same old SJ” if we win it may just be a new day”. This game is the ultimate test. I have never seen a SJ team in my 14 yrs rooting that played a fantastic game from beginning to end & won in the biggest game of the yr with direct NCAAT implications. It’s hard to beat teams 3x but Hall’s huge advantage is their toughness & guard depth. They have 3-4 guys Dawes, Richmond, Dre, Wusu & any of them can catch fire. We only have DJ as a guard that is a true threat to go off. We need to utilize Wilcher if Dingle or DJ struggle.

We need to throw diff looks. Zone them, then pack it in paint so they have to chuck. No easy layups. No easy FT’s. We need all guys giving 110% and getting scrapes diving for loose balls all game. If we’re chucking & they are not hitting, we need to get in paint & not settle. We need to end Hall being our daddy for good.

So Wusu is a threat to go off and Jordan Dingle isn’t? As usual just so down on our team and overhyping the other team to an absurd degree. Dingle has been playing a lot better and is absolutely a threat to “catch fire”

My strategy is let Dylan beat you deep and help stop Kadary penetration. Obviously Davis & Dawes can hurt you on kick outs but Dylan is so streaky & worth risk of not paying much attention to him imo.

Rick likes to jump teams with surprises in key games. The best we looked all year was first Uconn game in the first half with the zone.

In a better scenario you hold that for the first game of the NCAA tournament, but we don’t have that luxury. Pack it in, call off the press except when we both have the second units in, and make them one dimensional.

Need to absolutely go for the jugular on the offensive glass every game left. Nothing brings that out like lose-and-go-home games. That is the one area this team scares everyone in the country.

We should not press the entire game. We are awful at it and we commit dumb foul after dumb foul in the backcourt.

We have Pitino. We have 6 seniors, 4 of them hungry to make their first NCAA Tournament. One of them was a rotation player for the national champs last year. We have more talent than them. They've embarrassed us twice already.

Either we've turned the corner and win a big one and make Friday of the BET for the first time since before any of our current players were born or we're same old St John's
