My gym teacher at Nazareth coached him at Tech. Do you remember coach McMorrow?

I actually interviewed him for a story when I worked at Newsday covering the PSAL.

Best guy from my high school is Danny Green but he’s a lot younger than me.

Notable guys I played against back in the mid 90s: Wally Szerbiak (no way I’m spelling that right), Zendon Hamilton, Bobby Hodgson, Brian Ehlers, Mike James, Gary Williams, Ed Brown, Drew Nicholas, Vasil Emtinov. Etc. Played against Bob McKillop coached teams a few times.
if they played on LI between ‘93-‘97, chances are I played against them. I played high school and the summer league circuit and was lightly recruited out of high school (more for my height and camps than anything).
Kenny Anderson (Georgia Tech)
Robert Werdann
Ralph James (Harvard)
Steven Frazier (Miami a classmate at Molloy and one of Leonard Hamilton’s first recruits at Miami)

One of greatest games I ever attended was Molloy (Anderson Werdann) vs. Tolentine (the late great Malik Sealy, Bryan Reece, Adrian Autry) City Championship at Rose Hill.

Autry with 2 killer late 3s from left side
I was at that game,

What struck me about your post SJU85 is that two of the stars mentioned in that great NYC game wound up at St. John's. I think many of us were hoping for a return to those days of keeping a local star or two home every year with Chris' hiring. Realize the landscape has changed a lot since then with less kids staying home, but would still like to see us recruit more locally.

He was 2 years older than me and 1 younger than my brother. My brother was the PG on his junior year team. My baby face makes me look young :)

Wally is always very nice to me. I know some people on the board had bad experiences with him in the past.

People dismissed his game because it was Long Island C, but he could always play. Recruiters wanted him to be a spot up shooter, but his family wanted him to develop and all-around game. It all worked out well for him in the end.

Played against Rodrick Rhodes in the early 90s. If 'balls to the face' was actually a foul, maybe we would have had a chance cause when he was dunking (and he did it almost every possession) the best we could do was get his balls in our faces.

Matt Doherty Holy Trinity DHS Hicksville

In football it was Ralph Peretta who got a full ride to Purdue and played for San Diego in the NFL.

Actually I was responding to Billthetrith’s post. Not sure why it showed up as me responded to his quote.

We went after him late and probably more as the spot up shooter. His father didn’t want him playing for Mahoney because he felt he had misused and didn’t develop Sergio Lyuk. Wally’s and Sergio’s families knew each other (I believe it was the fathers).

See I would have guessed 10 years, you like 35, him like 45. Guess I'll never work as the age and weight guesser at the carnival. PS congrats on the upcoming bundle o'joy.

Apologies to you both, it was due to my careless cutting and pasting. In any event, no harm intended.

Yes but the really big names we wanted always seem to go down south. Trust me we all really wanted Kenny Anderson to be a Johnny

Read my post last page, I guess we’re from the same town. I don’t think “total dick” really covers it, though, if you know what I mean.

STJ never got all the best NYC players. For example on this list of the "top 60" only 7 went to STJ.

However in the good old days you could stock a great roster with 2nd team all city players and be very competitive. NYC kids were on every top program's roster as the game was very regional and very urban. Times have changed so now we discuss finding those NYC diamonds in the rough from the same pool.
