Beilein to NBA
Michigan has offered head coaching position to Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard.
Per Goodman
Well, five-six years an assistant coach in the NBA isn't bad, but as we know, a whole different deal. Another player come home.

5 years of experience as an assistant working under Spoelstra/Riley leaves him much better prepared for a head coaching job than that other guy.
Mullin tenure - "lackluster"

Juwan Howard the latest mold-breaking NBA hire in college basketball

You have to be motivated. You have to WANT to work harder than anyone. I think Penny clearly gets that, Ewing does too. I think Howard will be motivated. You have to understand early on your earlier reputation as a great player will dry up very quickly, after that recruits and fans are only interested in 2 things: 1)Results and 2) What are you doing to make sure your results are good. Read Bruce Pearl's quote about being a major college coach. And now you know why it just was not going to work out for Chris spending half of the year in California and outsourcing recruiting to 1 assistant:

First thing Howard needs to do is getting those final four banners dusted off and hang them back on the rafters of Crisler.

Adam Schein killed St John's for the Chris Mullin hire on his show today. He said that St John's was chasing a legacy to placate the fan base when Mullin was hired and that he was not prepared for or wanted to do the job. He extolled the praises of Juwan Howard to Michigan hire based on the fact that Howard paid his dues as a highly respected NBA assistant coach for several years who was being considered for interviews for an NBA head coaching job.

Hard to argue with what Schein said. Mullin was never fully vested in performing all of the responsibilities involved in being a college head coach. Making the change to CMA seems like a step in the right direction for the future of our program.

Chris lobbied hard for the job too. It would have taken some cajones 4 years ago for someone in the SJU administration to say No to a legend but in retrospect that is what they should have done and gone after Danny. But it is all water under the bridge now.

If we had hired Danny, he'd still be at UCONN today.

Can’t do over the past but I am optimistic about the long term success StJohn’s will enjoy under workhorse Coach Mike Anderson and his hard working staff.
