Beilein to NBA

Wow, I am surprised.

Paraphrasing something I heard previously, in the pros, it just basketball. You are not worried about whether this one is going to class and will he be eligible, spending your time traveling not just for a game but to recruit and spend all season and the off-season doing so, dealing with the boosters and a whole slew of other things and doing it year round.

In the pros its' about the Jimmys and Joes and Xs and Os. Unless you have the GM title also, someone else will get the Jimmys and Joes so you can focus on the Xs and Os. You are already dealing with the press and fans on both levels and social worker is part of any coach's job.

I think it was P.J. Carlesimo who said that the NBA is the basketball junkies dream. Once the season starts it’s games every other night. College has a lot more side work, worrying about kids going to class and pandering to 17 and 18 year old kids. Of course now he is entering the realm of the massive ego of a paid professional athlete. I give him 2 years and he’ll probably get fired with lots of guaranteed money for his retirement. Not a bad way to end.

To me, either Kevin White or Chris Collins make a lot of sense. Kevin Keatts of NC State would be a more unusual choice for Michigan (run & gun style) but he's a good coach. I don't think Beard would take the job at this time. I don't think Donovan is leaving OKC right now. Will be interesting to see who they go with.

He likes to move to the next challenge. Remember in 2006 he wanted to leave WVU for NC St. Except NC St did not want to pay the entire buyout and WVU would not budge. He ended up staying 1 more year before Michigan came calling in 2007.

Jalen Rose is publicly pushing very hard for Howard to get the job

I was away for most of the last 10 days so you guys caught a HUGE break from me posting. I caught the tail end of this on the news and when they said Cavaliers, I thought they meant UVA Cavaliers, then wondered what I missed in terms of Tony Bennett departing. I was afraid to google Tony Bennett departed lest I discover the singer had died. Whew.

In any event, last grab at the brass ring of crazy dollars, but pretty much is a puzzling move by the Cavs. Can't see him at his age and sidelines style being embraced by players. Yea he could damage his overall reputation, but to me this is a money grab and nothing more.

I eat lunch with Beilein’s cousin about once a week. Beilein’s cousin claims that money was not the primary motive for him leaving Michigan for the NBA. His cuz told me that Beilein took the NBA gig because it is less of a 24/7 12 month commitment with summers off, and no recruiting.

Otis bad editing job-the post you quoted is not mine just to clarify, not that it means much.

Beilein always struck me as a coach that didn’t like the recruiting and other aspects anyway. He too always relied on his staff to do most of the recruiting and he was never the guy known for his recruiting prowess. It makes sense from that angle. Money can’t hurt either.

Stupid Beilein thinking college coaching is 24/7 365
Isn't he a guy known to occasionally lose his temper with his players? That won't fly in the NBA
For a few million dollars per "six-month year" and not having to deal with recruiting, I'd learn to control my temper. Aside from Bobby Knight, who wouldn't?

Unless your name is Gregg Popovich.

Michigan has offered head coaching position to Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard.
