Becoming a good program

He won't be fired, because there's no one out there this school would hire who could do a better job.

It is what it is.

It's by no means time to start looking for a replacement. But I don't accept the premise that we're stuck with Lavin because we'll never find anyone who can do a better job. A big name isn't necessarily required. This isn't a decision where Roberts or Lavin are the only possibilities. There are other coaches who could get a few top 100 players to come here. Would they get as many as Lavin? I don't know. But he's not the only person in America who can recruit and talk articulately.

There are always replacements. One of my siblings and best friends' like to say such thing when we're talking about replacing coaches (not St. John's, but just in general).

They both like to say, "Who is out there?" My reply is 'there is always somebody out there.' We're generally talking about replacing of football coaches. I tell them, you have solid guys who are assistant coaches (in the professional and collegiate ranks) or up-and-coming head coaches at smaller schools (in the collegiate ranks). Like yourself, I told him that a big name isn't a requirement when it comes to replacing coaches.

You shouldn't settle because you feel you can't do any better. In our case, I'm willing to see this play out.

Maybe they should hire the Xavier coach to replace Lavin.

Monasch is passive, ineffective AD, biding his time. As someone on this Board astutely pointed out to me recently, perhaps a big part of getting program to a consistent level is a strong President who holds everyone accountable. For now I remain hopeful Lavin can achieve his targeted objective, dancing.

I agree. Is there any shot at replacing him? Also I know JL was at Niagra before, But what are your thoughts on him? i dont know much about him.[/quote]

I think Fidel Castro should be the next University President. He has experience, loves sports, and usually gets what he wants. He may have slowed down a bit, but if he could run Cuba, running St. John's should be a piece of cake.

I think an X's and O's guy is a must. I remember Coach Carnesecca had John Kresse do much of that work. No coach can do everything well. I too am frustrated that we don't have guys that can box out and dominate in the paint consistently. We seem to play well different facets from game to game. Some games the D is great, others not so. Not a consistent result or effort. Our team needs to ripen more quickly. Might help if the attendance picks up too.
Hopefully, we can see Sanchez use his size more inside.

Agree'd. Losing Dunlap I think was the worst thing that could have happened. My question is - What is Keady doing in all of this? Is he just on the bench to lend star power? The guy is a HoF coach right? Is he saying nothing about the substitution patterns, etc.?

Keady may lend some ideas during the coaches down time, but he isn't allowed to have any input during games.

can he comment to the coaches during half time??

I'm sure he probably gives some input at halftime.

Coach Keady is expensive window dressing at a discount store. You are not going to get Saks Fifth Avenue quality at Kohls. That said, he is not the solution to poor player development and game preparation. Tony Chiles was a good mid-major talent recruiter and that is all he will bring to the table. DOBO Martin was just a case of UCLA nepotism as was Rico Hines. Dunlop was a stern task master that was needed with the undisciplined Norm group but he is history. I am hoping Whitesell has some input with Lavin but it has not been evident.
The starting and substitution patterns shows a team in turmoil and a coach using his players like lab rats. However, even lab rats learn by repetition but unfortunately our repetition has been bad offense and bad defense with few players having well defined roles.
As one of the Xavier players said of the SJU players in the second half, and I paraphrase, they (SJ) were all over the place and we just ran our plays.
When you start two halves without your nationally prep ranked point guards in favor of a Phil Greene, the lab experiment that has failed over and over, then the coaches are the ones not learning as much as the players.

Please help me. Whenever Bobre is around and I respond to his Sean Evans nonsense, my kharma miraculously m goes down. Please help me by giving me + kharma so I don't have to go back on Zoloft to start the year.

I don't know if you can say it's X's and O's that defines the problem. You can be John Wooden, but if the players can't put the ball in the hole you're not going to win, not even in a watered down conference like the Big East. Lavin coaches as if he's showcasing his players for the next level as opposed to winning ballgames. His best chance of recruiting top players is to have his guys make it to the NBA. That's what recruits want to see. He can no longer sell the Big East or St. John's as the highest level of college basketball.

It's time for a reality check viewed by someone who began following this program when Joe Lapchick was coach. Not everyone is going to be happy...least of all, me. However, it is what it is. When Lavin and his top quality assistants arrived, I thought we'd have a shot at replacing Syracuse as New York's team. We won't. We've always been star-crossed. Lavin has been unable to change our karma. We're still star crossed. There's no need for examples. You know them as well as anyone.

Lavin is a young Looie. He's a great face of the program. He has Hollywood good looks. He's intelligent and articulate. He gets the program on national television more often than Looie could with the exception of the mid 80s heyday. That's a considerable feat for a team that's 50th or 60th in the country in a conference that went from the best nationally to a clone of the Atlantic 10.

Lavin will produce Looie-like results. I predict we'll be in a post season (NCAA or NIT, the others don't count) every year he's coaching here. I predict we'll make no more than one final four in the next 20 years. I predict if Lavin sticks around he'll be the the College Basketball HOF. He won't be fired, because there's no one out there this school would hire who could do a better job.

It is what it is.

Sad thing is this is probably the most accurate post of the day

WTF?????????

As a long-term season ticket holder and frequent reader of our beloved site, I too am puzzled by the whole in game decisions by our Coach. I believe Coach Lavin was a great hire and he adds a lot to our program. I believe Whitesell was a good hire as our X and O guy.
We need Lavin to let Whitesell loose like he did with Dunlap. We have a lot of raw, natural talent but for some reason it has not translated onto the court. Lavin keeps mentioning February, heck we have too many January games to worry about!
I am a Lavin supporter and I believe in him, Whitesell and the talent we have that things will turn around. We need a W on Saturday!
We have Villanova after Georgetown and an 0-3 start to BE play is a huge whole to dig out of.
Go Johnnies!

+1 kharma for Moose from me. Merry Christmas.

St. John's already once hired the Xavier coach - Xavier HS coach Frank McGuire.

The mood of the members seems so down. We shot 30 per cent and took 15 foul shots vs. a good team on their court. That will not win many games.
The biggest weakness of this team for the past three seasons has been an inability to penetrate packed in defenses and make outside shots.
Bringing in two 3 point shot specialists has not worked but Jordan's strengths are getting to the rim or the foul line so perhaps along with support from Sanchez there will be a turnaround.
On a personal note as a very long time fan but new member I love the passion.
