BE Tournament

This will be the first time that I've followed the BE tournament.
I know in the SEC tournament the best teams focus more on the upcoming NCAA tournament. Coaches don't push their best players nearly as hard in the conference tournament. They don't want them banged up going into the Big Dance.

I guess it's the same in the BE tournament? It'll be the teams on the bubble that play the hardest?
I'm hoping St John's wins a couple games. But it depends on the brackets and who they have to play. The NIT doesn't seem possible now unless the Johnnies have a deep run in the BE tournament. That's seems unlikely this year.

I've never heard of that before and frankly its surprising to hear.
Definitely not the case from the 20 years of watching the BET in my experience.

If I had to pick I rather see SJU win a BE tournament than make a round of 16 in NCAAs.

The conference tourneys help determine seeding in the NCAAS . Although the NCAAs trump conference tourneys. I would rather see SJU make the sweet 16.

We can certainly hope for a runi in the big east tournament but if we are being realistic there is not even a slim chance of that. The team is probably in the last ten per cent of shooting accuracy in all of college basketball and without generating some offense off its pressure defense will struggle to score fifty.
Because of the game every day schedule in the tournament and SJU's style of play
it is almost impossible for SJU to advance very far. If they shoot nine for twenty one from three like they did recently vs Prov they can compete against any big east team in the garden but that wn't continue more than one game. A win Wednesday night will be a successful tournament.

Sweet 16 or better in the NCAA tourney is head and shoulders above a BEC IMO. One is at the national level in front of tons of eyeballs across the country. The other is only within 10 schools in 1 conference. You still get some national recognition winning your conference but not nearly as much. You won't really remember SHU or PC winning the BEC in recent years that much, but you would surely remember a Sweet 16 or better run for a lifetime. Think about how long our Final Four berth has been discussed as a top memory even though it was almost 40 years ago. I think regular season BEC means more too, because a team can just get hot for a few games and win in the BET vs. being hot and consistent all year. Obviously I'd take either of these though and it would be something we haven't done in 20+ yrs way too long.

Obviously I'm biased but the Big East Tournament is the #1 conference tournament. It has the highest attendance, the best turnout per fan base (many fans are close to the Garden), and of course the best backdrop in MSG.

That said, I'd rather make the round of 16 than win a BET title.

I posted an hour ago how difficult it would be this season and now I am thinking all future seasons for an Anderson coached team playing pressure defense to do well in the season ending tournaments that are played without days off.
Does anyone know how his teams fared in prior season ending tournaments?

to those Posters who pointed it out the Johnnies did manage to beat georgetown and dep the last three years in the BET, I must be remembering from '12, '13. '14, '15, '16 when we could not win our first game and two of those years i sat there and watched Cooley beat us.

A couple years ago I would’ve said youre crazy but I actually agree.

We’ve taken so much shit from these other teams over the years in our conference, it would be pure ecstasy to stand over all of them as the champions of the big east tournament. Also, getting a St. John’s big east tournament champions t shirt to wear to games would be fun

This is what I said at the start he cant play 40 minutes of hell game after game with no days off. He must use other defenses to have a chance at all.

From 2015-2018 Arkansas went to the SEC Championship twice and the SEC semifinals as well.

So in St. John’s terms we call that territory we haven’t seen since I was 2 years old

These are 18-22 year-old kids in great shape. Plus Anderson plays a deep bench. Given the talent, the style of play should have no affect on our ability to succeed in a tournament format.

Anderson has not had the team pressing 40 minutes game after game. They have played more defenses, including zones, than the four previous years combined.

We don’t play “40 minutes of hell”, so there’s that... We play with a lot of pressure but it’s a ton more moderate than Nolan’s system.

When will you realize 40 minutes of hell hasn’t been played for years. It’s a meaningless talking point for announcers to fill time during a broadcast
